The Philadelphia Phillies announced Monday that former president and CEO David Montgomery will be posthumously inducted onto the club’s Wall of Fame at Citizens Bank Park before Saturday, Aug. 17’s game against the Washington Nationals.
In a statement issued by the team, managing partner John Middleton pointed to Montgomery’s impact on the creation of Citizens Bank Park and construction of an organization that produced the 2007-2011 golden era as the reason why the 20th season of the stadium is a perfect time to honor the former executive.
“No person deserves to be this year’s honoree more than David Montgomery who led the effort to design and build our ballpark and presided over one of the best eras in Phillies baseball,” Middleton said. “This will be a very special tribute for our fans and Phillies family, as David becomes the 48th inductee of the Toyota Wall of Fame.”
It should also be pointed out that late in his life Montgomery was instrumental in helping the Phillies to secure the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, when Citizens Bank Park will take the national stage during America’s 250th anniversary. MLB announced on April 16, 2019 that the Phillies would host the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, less than a month before Montgomery passed away following a five-year cancer battle.
In total, Montgomery spent 48 years working with the Phillies, which makes him a fitting selection to be the 48th Wall of Famer.
