Eaton Continues To Fail, Has Back Pain

While the Phillies-Rays game only went five innings, but that was enough for Adam Eaton to be horrible. He gave up four runs and five hits in two innings in what became a 6-4 loss.
After the game, Eaton complained of lower back pain. He said the pain started in July, yet it never forced him to miss a start. Now, there’s a possibility Eaton could be shelved for a while as he recooperates.
Chad Durbin finished up the game, giving up two runs in three innings. Chase Utley and Chris Coste hit home runs in the losing cause.
The big story obviously is Eaton. There’s numerous problems with him, none to which nobody really knows any answers. Is he this bad regularly? Or is there something keeping him from being better? Is he injured? Is it mental?
The point is — Adam Eaton’s stay with the Phillies has gone on long enough. After one absolutely miserable season and, so far, a horrible Spring Training, Eaton hasn’t given the Phillies any reason to put him in the starting rotation. Moreover, no matter if he’s really injured or not, the rampant excuses for his poor play have tread too much land.
“Obviously, I didn’t make good pitches. But at the same time, my back acted up a little bit and I didn’t get good extension on anything.”
What’s the difference? Before July, he was bad. After July, he was bad. In July, he was bad (actually, I take that back, July was his best month). Whether he’s injured or not, he’s bad, which make his excuses absolutely irrelevant. He let up four runs or more in 18 of 30 starts last season. You don’t give your team a chance to win with those numbers. He’s been a black hole in the rotation, and it’s time now to move on and find another plug. Whether it’s Travis Blackley, Kris Benson or Chad Durbin, JA Happ or JD Durbin, it’s time to move on. The Phillies need to swallow the $8MM they owe him this year and next year, find a new direction and move on.
And it’s not just the performance — it’s the utter unwitting ignorance of talent. Adam Eaton wasn’t effective at any point in 2007, and while we can’t pinpoint the reasons, it’s very probable it’s everything — physical problems, lack of talent, mental instability. Adam Eaton is the total package of failure.
What we got out of this games:
- Adam Eaton is the total package of failure.
- Chad Durbin ain’t much better.
Hopefully things will improve as the Phillies play the Rays in the back end of the home-and-home. Cole Hamels looks to rebound from a bad start against the Yankees. Top prospect Carlos Carrasco will try to extend his 0.00 ERA a few more innings, and Josh Outman is also scheduled to throw. Hey, Carrasco could fit himself into the No. 5 starter race very quickly tomorrow — whether we want that or not.

Hes a waste of fu*king air…Anyone take notice to Costanzo this spring? He just hit his 2nd HR and has a 474 AVG…Gillick and Amaro are probably kicking eachother’s a*s’ right now.

^If they traded Golson or Carrasco instead of Costanzo you would be saying the same thing.

I try to support Philly athletes when they aren’t playing too well because alot of times it’s unwarranted, but fuck that Eaton fucking sucks. I was pissed last year when I had to see him pitch and I hope to never see him pitch in a Phillies game ever again. Please Phillies please just eat the salary and move on because he’s not anything anyone anywhere would want in a trade at this point. I’m sick of him, point blank period.

Meh, Ed Wade is kicking his own too. If Lidge pans out, it’s a null issue.

Amen, Tim. Who the heck decided to pay this guy $8 million a year in the first place? Is that Gillick? That means he’s responsible for “we don’t need to have him take a physical” Garcia and Eaton. When are we going to get a GM who both cares and is smart?
Whatever. Back to topic: Eaton is a failure in every way. Cut him. Here’s hoping Benson is ready by May 1.

The only thing Eaton did good last year was pitch good against the Mets. Anything else he tried to do flat out sucked. Eat the bad contract and move on. I hate when teams are committed to playing a guy just because they are paying him decent money. If the guy isn’t performing get him out until he shows he is a viable option again. Unfortunately I don’t think Eaton will prove himself a viable option again EVER.

What options do the Phillies have when it comes to Eaton? From what we are seeing, he can’t be trusted as a viable option on the pitching staff in any capacity. He is sucking the life out of the budget, resources, innings and potential wins. If the decision is made to let him go, what can they do?
Can they keep him on the DL in AAA, hope he does well and then add him to a trade? Do they pay him 16 M over the next two years and let him sit at home with Matt Gieger and watch the games from his living room?

If no one will take Lohse for 1 year 4 million, it is going to be impossible to unload Eaton and eat less then half his salary. I think we need to look for another bad contract and do a swap.

The only plausible idea for keeping him is DL’ing him, then have him rehab in Allentown until he looks ready. Bring him up if he is and try him out in long relief. If he succeeds, ease him into the rotation.
But if he’s not effective in AAA, wait him out until the end of 2008, then release him. Eat up the $8MM left in the contract.
I’d wish he could maybe be effective in the bullpen, but his first inning is always the worst, and you can’t even rely on his fastball.

Thanks for answering my question. I think that is the best option at this point and it is a good thing that he is “injured” (even though I don’t totally believe it) because it does allow for that option. Try to make the best out of a bad situation is all you can really do at this point. You never know too, sometimes just a change of scenery (Allentown) or a slight move in position (long relief) can do wonders. We were talking about Pat Burrel last year and all of a sudden he gets new contacts and he’s batting over .300 for the last half of ’07.

Anyone else surprised we haven’t heard Madson mentioned as a 5th starter candidate? I guess that would deplete our pen, but I am still a bit surprised the way Eaton obviously isn’t going to cut it.

Madson’s major hurdle is pressure, oddly. We saw that in early 2006 when the Phils tried to pin him down as the fourth starter. He works best in the seventh inning because he isn’t starting and the game isn’t completely on his shoulders. I like Madson just the way he is.

When did Eaton tell the Phils that his “back discomfort” began? Was it last July? Or after he got shelled again yesterday? Something doesn’t sound right here. He’s had “back discomfort” for the rest of last season, the whole offseason, the beginning of this spring training, and he decided, all of a sudden, to mention it to the press yesterday, after getting knocked around pretty badly? I call bullshit. Someone’s negligent here; it’s either the Phils medical staff for not treating him properly or him for not telling anyone (if he actually was hurt).

He said it happened in July of 2007 while moving a batting cage, but the back pain was never anything serious to cause panic.
Of course, his ERA was something serious that should’ve caused panic.
You are right park, something is negligent:
1. Eaton and the team could be lying about the back pain, using it as an excuse to get him out of there.
2. Eaton never said a word about the pain, thus really putting us in trouble.
3. Eaton could’ve said a word about the pain, but the Phils thought, oh it’s nothing serious, and went with him until the shoulder injury.
I would go with No. 3 if anything, knowing the Phillies history with detecting and grading injuries. No. 2 is also a possibility, just because I fancy Eaton to be a real squirmy fellow.
