Down Early, Phils Power Past Rockies

It started downright ugly, with the defense flubbing plays and Kyle Kendrick not on his game again. But somehow, the Phils remained in the game and seized the opportunity, turning a typical loss into a runaway 9-5 win over the Rockies.

The offense looked sharp, and in critical situations. Jayson Werth hit his first career inside-the-park home run with a drive to the deepest part of Coors Field, and Chase Utley followed that up with his ninth homer of the year, his sixth in five games (he’s hit one in each of his last five, tying a franchise record). Down one, the Phils manufactured a two-out rally to load the bases off local product Taylor Buchholz. And with the bases loaded — a spot in which the Phils have struggled this year — Carlos Ruiz came up huge with a two-run double to grab the lead.

Werth and TJ Bohn added to the damage in the ninth, gaining insurance for the Phils for the easy close. Werth had two hits, Utley had two hits, Ryan Howard had two hits, and Pat Burrell had three hits, including his seventh home run of the season.

Kudos to the bullpen, who came up large. Clay Condrey battled out of a scoreless sixth inning; Rudy Seanez worked a scoreless seventh for the win; Tom Gordon had a fine eighth inning for the hold; Brad Lidge closed the door on the Rockies. Food for thought: Coming into the game the bullpen had a 3.03 ERA. They are now under 3.00.

Kendrick struggled to get five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks.

I have to give props to Ryan Howard, too. He singled to key that two-out rally that got the Phils the win. Also, Burrell going the other way with a single in the hole? Brilliant.

Howard fielded well Sunday night. I’d like to see the errors get reduced. The Phils sounded like they made some nice defensive plays tonight (3 DPs) in addition to their flubs, maybe they are starting to get on track. Fortunately, the errors didn’t cost them. It is nice to have a bullpen thats clicking, maybe some singles and some clutch hits by the Phils tonight will jumpstart that O.

Does anyone else think that T.J. Bohn looks like he should be playing bass for the Scorpions? Glad to see him atone for the drop, maybe Howard could use some pointers.

    Brian,
You look way to natural shoving that foot long down your throat. Do you have a lot of prior experience with long tubular things i your mouth?

Looking at the last photo of the set, is that Tom McCarthy interviewing Jason Werth? I like him as a play by play announcer as long as he doesn’t go off track with rambling anecdotes that aren’t related to the game at hand. ;-)

As you probably know, he covered the Mets games as announcer on WFAN radio station for 2 years prior to being hired by the Phillies. In addition, I have good memories of him back in the early 90′s when he was covering the Trenton Thunder (Trenton, NJ near where I lived), a double A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers at the time. What you may not know, he also became assistant general manager of the team later on in 1996 I think. Anyone for Tom as Phillies’ GM when “Stand Pat” Gillick leaves after this season. ;-)

Hope you guys are having fun out there! I thought Kendrick looked better last night then early on in the season but he still is not pitching with the confidence he had last year. He needs to stop trying to strike guys out and make perfect pitches and allow his defense to do the work.

I believe he was only with the Mets for 1 year right? He left us, and we won. Wasn’t sure I wanted him back after that.

Ha! I was waiting for a comment to that extent. I certainly asked for it.

But yes, that was Tom McCarthy interviewing Werth.

McCarthy gave us a fist pump after interviewing Werth. Good times indeed. Looking forward to Game 2 and the 6 hour red eye home afterwards.

BTW, I believe I remarked about her yesterday, but the one interviewing Chase Utley is FSN Rocky Mountain’s Alanna Rizzo. She’s a tremendous sideline reporter. Absolutely tremendous.

If she’s reading this, I am single.

His control has been off over the past week, but I believe that Rudy Seanez is going to turn out to be a valuable pickup for this year’s team. Kendrick needs to be quicker to learn the lesson that Gavin Floyd has apparently finally learned this season in Chicago….be aggressive! Trust your stuff and your fielders! Chase is quite simply one of the best hitters in baseball today.
