Ed Wade Returns As GM Tonight

Paul Hagen wrote about Ed Wade’s return as a general manager to Philadelphia, the place where he spent eight seasons running the baseball operations. Wade says he still follows the Phillies, and was happy when Cole Hamels pitched a stunning seven-inning, one-hit game against the Cubs Saturday night.

When looking back at Wade’s tenure, the school of thought that generally enters the mind is that Wade failed to bring a championship to Philadelphia. He was terrible at in-season transactions and not much better during the offseason. He made one big free agent signings (Jim Thome), a few smaller ones (David Bell) and some iffy trades.

Of course, the trades weren’t all bad in retrospect:

Curt Schilling for Omar Daal, Travis Lee, Vicente Padilla and Nelson Figueroa.

OK, Schilling became a legend after the deal, but Daal gave the Phils a good season, Lee was a passable first bagger for a couple years, Padilla is a noted No. 4 starter and Figueroa — heck — he’s starting for a “contending” team.

Scott Rolen and Doug Nickle for Placido Polanco, Mike Timlin and Bud Smith.

Rolen never got much better as a Cardinal; Polanco almost won a batting title and Timlin was a very good reliever for a few years.

OK, I’m reaching a bit, but the one thing people say Wade seemed to do well was oversee a draft class. Let’s look at the years 1998-2005 and put together the All Ed-Wade Team, players the Phillies drafted during his tenure:

C – Lou Marson
1B – Ryan Howard – .288 / 132 HR / .999 OPS
2B – Chase Utley – .301 / 100 HR / .891 OPS
3B – Mike Costanzo
SS – Nick Punto – .246 / 9 HR / .637 OPS
LF – Pat Burrell – .259 / 222 HR / .853 OPS
CF – Marlon Byrd – .271 / 30 HR / .724 OPS
RF – Jason Michaels – .277 / 37 HR / .764 OPS
C – Jason Jaramillo
IF – Jake Blalock
IF/OF – Eric Valent – .234 / 13 HR / .696 OPS
OF – Michael Bourn – .253 / 2 HR / .686 OPS
OF – Chris Roberson – .232 / 2 HR / .515 OPS
SP – Cole Hamels – 26-14 / 3.49 ERA
SP – Brett Myers – 60-48 / 4.35 ERA
SP – Kyle Kendrick – 11-5 / 4.00 ERA
SP – Taylor Buchholz – 13-15 / 5.02 ERA
SP – Gavin Floyd – 10-10 / 6.00 ERA
RP – Joshua Outman
RP – JA Happ
RP – Joe Bisenius – 0-0 / 2.00 ERA
RP – Kameron Loe – 6-11 / 5.36 ERA
RP – Ryan Madson – 28-19 / 4.17 ERA
RP – Geoff Geary – 13-5 / 3.93 ERA
RP – Scott Mathieson – 1-4 / 7.47 ERA

How many games does this team win, 75? 70? Honestly, over Wade’s tenure, the Phils drafted a couple studs, and they seemed destined to at least break the league as a starter. After the big few, it’s a pretty mediocre list of fringe guys (Geary, Michaels, Valent), guys who never lived up to potential (Buchholz, Loe, Punto) and Minor Leaguers. Give Wade credit for grabbing some great foundation players, but beyond them, it’s a shallow, shallow pool.

Small quibble: Mike Timlin is a righty. And still quite an effective reliever, barring early 2008 struggles with an injury.

Phils got Wagner in a trade….Bucholz, etc.

Wades drafts were above average at best. His trades were terrible. Thats why I was fired up when we got Lidge. Not because of him because any trade Wade does, the other team will get the best of it.

The Schilling trade will go down in history as one of the worst ever. The Rolen trade was bad, but if he could have kept Timlin and not traded Polanco for Urbina then that would have just been below average. But he didnt.

Fixed both things. Yeah, it’s a lot of work grabbing Nick Punto’s stats that sometimes you forget even smaller things to check.

I boooo’d Bill Giles last night on Chestnut Street. Was badly wishing I was 17 again with no scruples about sharing some colorful methaphors. God, I hate that guy.

Thome was one of the biggest mistakes in their franchise’s recent memory. The ryan howard situation would be easier to deal with if they would have brought him up at the right time.

    Absolutely. Very good point, Geoff.

Thanks. Thats why his agent can legitimately classify his situation as unprecedented. If they brought him up normally it would be easy to compare him to albert pujols. Then, Carbrera’s contract now would have been based off of howards. Howard would have been affordable and it would be possible to lock him up long-term if they brought him up at a normal age (23,24,25). But his contract situation, his agent, their demands, the face that there is no precedent, etc. all of that makes me want to have no part of this situation from a GM’s perspective, ESPECIALLY a new GM like Amaro (who presumably would be the man who will have to deal with this). Perhaps Gillick could move him to avoid that situation. I want to know how many people would take howard over hamels? I cant imagine itd be too many.

Also at C- Carlos Ruiz was signed as a minor league FA in 1998 under Wade’s watch.
I think Wade made some strong moves at the time and made some pretty crappy moves too. But the starting C, 1B, 2B, LF, CF and our Top 2 starters were drafted (Victorino was a Rule 5 choice in 2005) under Wade.
I thought his offseason moves were much better: Millwood, Wagner, Bell, Thome (depsite what they say above- it is always easier in hindsight), et al were some real strong moves. I think if Wade could have kept Polanco and dealt Bell for Urbina, we would have been in the playoffs under his watch. To me, that was his biggest mistake but if I am Detroit, I take Polanco over Bell any day.

I was happy that he was fired but reflecting on what he did accomplish with trades, it got me to thinking, what exactly has Gillick done in his major moves. I think his smaller moves have been brilliant, but all of his major moves have crapped it up. So, therefore I give Wade a B- in his term as GM, whereas three years ago, it looked like a big, fat F!

Gillick won’t have any better rep. Signing Gordan. Not signing wagner. The infamous gavin floyd and gio gonzonaz trade for who? (o the scrub who played five games for us. and when he did play he walked out ground balls) not locking up Rowand before he has a career year. This is what burell is about to do. Not getting pitching. Signing Eaton. Gillick is a bad GM in my eyes. Many other moves but i can t think of them. we really cant blame him for the wagner situation bc hes not worth it but i hate him so much!!! Bobby Abrau for who??????
