Gameday: Phillies (0-2) Vs. Nationals (3-0)

First the pitching went down the toilet. Then the hitting went down the toilet. So now, they have to both get it together, right?
Hopefully the Phillies can avoid the sweep as they take on the Nationals for the season’s first Business Person’s Special. The ageless Jamie Moyer will trot out to begin his 23rd Major League season. He’ll face Jason Bergmann, who will begin his fourth.
And today the Phillies will sport their new, alternate uniforms. Should be a nice sight.
Phillies: Jamie Moyer (0-0), 0.00 ERA
Nationals: Jason Bergmann (0-0), 0.00 ERA
Gametime: 1:05 p.m.
Weather: 52 degrees, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Coste/Moyer

Your gameday beer: Jamie Moyer, 45, is the oldest player in Major League Baseball. As he begins his 23rd season, we look back at his humble beginnings in Chicago and celebrate him with an Old Style Beer. It’s a bit classier than your regular Bud, and it actually goes down smoother than most other macro brews. Drink yours — you can get it in Reading — with a nice grilled sausage.
Go Phillies!

I have to begin by saying that I’m a Mets fan … I love your gameday beer section. Great touch! It’s right around lunchtime and all I’m thinking about is trying the Old Style Beer.
But no Cheesesteak?? Grilled sausage is great but a nice Pat’s cheesteak is UNBELIEVABLE! Whenever I go I always remember to take off my Mets hat to show respect to Philly (plus I don’t want any spit in my food!).
Good Luck this year guys … Should be a fun season.

Murph: We’ll get our cheesteak beer in soon enough. Cheesesteaks need a hearty, but light beer capable of handling all the flavors of cheese, ketchup and steak.

My modest goal for the notoriously sluggish April Philles: Get us at least 16 W’s in April.

Moyer is getting the W today. He’s the teams pickmeup.

The beer/food combo should have been some Yards and a Cheesesteak…two good things from the area for our hometown boy.

Yards and a steak is a good combo, and I’ll get Yards in there (there are 159 more games to go) but the Chicago tie, the “old” tie, the throwback unis – it made sense to make today Old Style day.

So far the old man isn’t pitching well and Chase Utley made a freakin’ throwing error on a potenital GIDP. It’s 1-0 Nats with an out in the first.

Already 4-0 Nationals. Bad defense. Bad pitching. Bad everything.

See, either they were going to put it together today, or they were going to completely stink. The latter seems true. Watch the offense get like three hits and maybe a run.

This feels like the game of game the Phils will lose 9-8… they will make a big comeback, and then the bullpen will cough it up.

This is eerily similar to last year. The first 2 games were very tough losses. The 3rd game they got murdered (eaton).

Getting a closer coming off an injury, moving a pitcher with control problems back into the rotation, signing two 33 year-old position players, and signing a 30 year old starter who pitches out of the bullpen (even though hes done allright so far- char durbin) isnt a significant offseason. Yet they sold it to the city like its so great. They didnt do enough, they jsut didnt. Theyll still be in the hunt because its the NL but they wont do it unless they get those things that they failed to compensate for in the offseason. Where is the big 3rd baseman coming into his prime who hits in the third slot (mets, nationals), though feliz is a good defender its been painful watching him try and hit. where is the 3rd and 4th starter who get 15 wins a year at least and have ERA’s under 5? (yes, this is what you have on championship teams). we havent seem kenreick yet but i would be happy if he can stop the bleeding. romero is their best pen picther by far, and he seems to be the guy who is most into form at any position right now. Theres a long way to go but you cant throw away games because of poor personnel decisions. i cant blame charlie for any of this when you see what he has to work with.

God, I love Coste. Even moreso after reading his book. What a gamer.

On a team with real starting pitching Moyer would only be the 5th starter if he was even in the rotation at all.

Consecutive singles by Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Coste and Dobbs have tied it at 6!

A WIN!!! Odd way to end it… intenional walk to Utley and Howard to load the bases, then a walk to Werth. I’ll take it!

Thats why they ought to remain in the hunt all year, theyre not the only team with suspect pitching.
