Gameday: Phillies (2-4) At Reds (4-2)

After a pretty crummy loss, the Phils will attempt to even up the four-game set with the Reds when Cole Hamels takes the hill today.
Yesterday the offense couldn’t come up big, and the supposed ace, Brett Myers, struggled for a second consecutive start. He needs to check-ity check himself before he wreck-ity wrecks himself.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (0-1), 1.13 ERA
Reds: Bronson Arroyo (0-0), 3.60 ERA
Gametime: 12:35 p.m.
Weather: 69 degrees, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Ruiz/Hamels

Your gameday beer: It’s noon on a Monday, but a drink won’t hurt, right? Considering the only time I usually drink at noon on a Monday is if Monday is St. Patrick’s Day, I’m going with the “Irish” red today: Killian’s Irish Red lager. It’s not really Irish — it’s more of a watered down microbrew version of a good European red lager. Have one with some corned beef, a strong meat that’ll keep the mediocrity of Killian’s at bay.
Go Phillies!

Why would you suggest a RED beer when the phils are playing the REDS? It’s almost as bad as me selling Coors light when the Phils got swept by the Rockies…

I don’t think suggesting red beers is giving the Reds the advantage they need. You gotta have fun with the beers, Lorenzo.

Thanks to Feliz’s 2nd error of the season (isn’t this guy a gold glover?) it is now 3-2.

I know it’s early and all, but Pedro Feliz is irritating the hell out of me so far this season. From those dumb ass strikeouts (I pretty much called how he would strike out if he took a first strike on the 2 – 0 counts) yesterday to all the errors he’s looking like the new Rod Barajas, just more expensive lol.

I’m already sick of victorino. Time to try Taguchi out for a start or 2, let the hawaiian clear his head.

Yeah, Vic needs to sit, and today would’ve been the right day. If anything, they should move him down in the order or have him situational hit.

Victornio’s slow start has worried me as well. They have another day game tomorrow so maybe he’ll get a rest then.

Jenkins seems like hell end up being ok even though hes a little bit of a free swinger. Feliz has been horrible at the plate, theres no way around that. Dobbs isnt a good enough hitter to earn more AB’s though. whats gotten into pat burrell? hes stroke is more efficient and patient it seems. i suppose he wants to crack the 15 million per year salary mark to go play for the yankees next year after all.

So far, here are the moves that need to be made:
Give Burrell a one-year deal with an option for 2. Trade Ryan Howard ASAP to an American League team in need of a DH, and get a nice young pitcher in return.

I would just like to point out that “Mike” who just suggested trading Howard was not me (the one who has been posting during the game).

I’m proud to suggest trading Howard. He’s a great player that we do not need. We need pitching. The end.

W for Cole, and a Save for Lidge – that’s what they needed heading into the Mets series. Who’s up for playing hookie tomorrow?

Nah, we need Howard.
Huge win today going into tomorrow. BIG series coming up.

nice solid win for the most part. you want to see lidge get the save with his first opportunity to help his confidence.

i want to see them lock up howard, but only as long as the contract isnt outrageous beacuse i dont believe in outrageous contracts. i just dont. sign him to lucrative deal (15-20 mil per) but dont go breaking any records that will cripple your payroll when howard is 35 and can only be a DH in the AL. sure, like i said, you have to go spend the money but dont go doing anything stupid. and for goodness sakes, this time, please dont put a no-trade clause in there. plus, whenever in doubt, go get more pitching. plus, they should be spending time figuring out how to convince the mariners to trade felix hernandez without giving up too much of their mlb roster. (pipe dream)

also, is the consensus to let burrel walk or trade him here? or do you guys think they should re-sign him within reason?

It all depends on what he wants. If he really wants a longer deal — anywhere more than 2-3 years, he’s walking. But if he’ll accept a $8MM/year, 2-year deal with a third-year option, shoot, I’ll take him. He’s become a pro’s hitter; I love the guy, good or bad.

I see basically 0 chance Burrell re-signs.
The guy is going to get better offers than the one we give him. He’s gone.
