It Goes Extras, But Phils Drop Another To Mets

The Phillies lost the rubber game of a three-game set to the Mets, 4-3, in 12 innings. There were plenty of dramatics in the game, but it all came down to a close play at the plate. Whether Jose Reyes was safe or not isn’t a big deal — the Phils should’ve won this one earlier.

Eric Bruntlett’s incapability to put down a bunt cost the Phillies in the 11th inning. (Why Cole Hamels even had to come up to pinch hit is ridiculous — another failure of Charlie Manuel’s managing tendencies). Tom Gordon gave up the futile fourth run, but it wasn’t completely his fault.

Bottom line — the Phils left 27 men on base; Bruntlett left two on. So far, at least 1.5 games can be attributed to his wrongdoing. It’s not acceptable for the Phils to play this poorly offensively. Gordon got the loss — maybe undeserved — while Adam Eaton pitched a solid six innings, giving up three runs. Clearly, Eaton is the least of the team’s problems. We need Jimmy Rollins back, and now.

Damn, that sucks. It stinks that last year when Eaton gave us garbage we found a way to win anyway. Now, he’s giving us gold and we can’t secure an extra run?

The general manager and ownership always back out of spending money on pitching because they tout the offense. So what are you going to do now when the offense IS the problem?

While I thing this guy “NYC PIMP DADDY” is a complete nimrod, he did make some good points. We did take the series and we are not even working on all cylinders yet.

Can’t believe you could actually read that, Triple M. I didn’t get past “dat kat Claudio Vargas.” I don’t think anyone has ever refered to him as a feline. Anyway, you’re a better man than I, clearly, Triple M.

What was Chandler’s annoying girlfriend’s name on “Friends” – Janice?? Janet??

Can we set her up on a date with Bruntlett, so he’ll get on the plane for Yemen…

I agree with Tim (who by the way, does a great job with this site). This dufus NYC Pimp loser is a real wannabe. He is probably some rich white boy using his daddy’s computer and drives his mommys lexus.

All New Yorkers are the same. All bark and no bite. Just like Carlos Beltran.

Yet another reason why we need instant replay.

It is quite obvious that 1. the UMPs wanted to go home. 2. These Umpires have an undying love for the Mets and always give them the calls. Did you see them overturn that play of them in Atlanta last weekend. It is disgusting.

Im going on Saturday, so fortunately I get to see Hamels assuming that it doesnt rain. I was worried I might see moyer for a while there.

Wait – I am going to break my rule of only posting “Stop crying your heart out” to respond to Phillies Fanatic 007 – Really? Really? The umpires love the mets because they overturned a bad call and got it right against the Braves? Really. Obviously every call that can go the mets way does, that is clearly what resulted in 9,999 of the 10,000 phillies losses.

Please, instead of trolling our board, why not go rejoyce and be glad on your “metsblog.com”.

I love these Mets fans. They care about our Phillies more than they care about our Mets.

Well, I guess it is clear, even to the Muts fans…….Philly is the team to beat in the N.L.. They do say it is tough to be the best because everyone tries to knock you down.

Well, good luck muts. Hope you don’t have the BIGGEST collapse in baseball history….2 years in a row.

We can see that rollins without a doubt is essential to our club, but I’m kinda stuck on how poorly shane plays offensively. Does anyone else think he shouldn’t be batting second? I know he represents speed, but what’s the point if he never gets on?

    My proposed batting order”
    Rollins/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Victorino/Ruiz/Pitcher

The mets collapsed in 1964? Because, that was really the worst collapse in baseball history.

I’m gald you admit that the Mets lost the division last year and the Phillies just happened to be there to take it, but still haven’t won anything.

    LOLS.

I had posted this on another website for Phillies’ fans prior to last night’s game and since Victorino is mentioned here, I thought I do the same here.

“With Shane Victorino continuing to swing poorly and hitting just .162
for BA, I became curious as to how other former Phillie
centerfielders are doing so far this season.”

Here are their latest stats in the early going:

    Victorino: 9 G; 37 AB; 6 H; 2 BB; 7 K’s: 1 SB; .162 BA; .205 OBP

    Rowand : 7 G; 25 AB; 7 H; 1 BB; 8 K’s; 0 SB; .280 BA; .296 OBP

    Bourn : 9 G; 37 AB; 8 H; 4 BB; 9 K’s; 6 SB* .216 BA; .293 OBP
    * Bourn leads league in SB’s

Hopefully, Rollins is in the lineup tonight and Victorino returns to his more familier spot (2nd). Once Victorino ends his slump, his speed (along with Rollins) at the top of the order is essential for any success the team will have.

    To the “Mets Fan”:
Why did you have to bring up the ’64 collapse? :-) For an old timer and Phillie fan like me, it still brings bitter memories. I also feel your pain on your team’s “historical” collapse of 2007. :-)

It’s a moot point on which collapse is worse. This is 2008 and a new season of hopes which I’m sure you agree. Your team earned “bragging rights” in the first hard fought series with the Phillies. As a Phillie fan, I can hardly wait for next series vs the Mets and get revenge. :-)

Bruce, of course I agree. That was in response to Phillies Fanatic 007, who brought up last years collapse. I was just needling. It’s all in good fun, that’s what a rivalry is all about.

I am looking forward to the next series as well, as I will be in Philly for the Saturday game next week. Hopefully it goes like last June.

It will be interesting next weekend. This is how it will turn out pitching wise (somebody correct me if I am wrong):

    Friday: Figueroa vs. Hamels
    Saturday: Perez vs. Moyer
    Sunday: Pelfrey vs. Kendrick

Waaah! The umpires wanted to go home! Waaah! The umpires are all involved in a conspiracy to make all the calls the Mets way (they also know where Jimmy Hoffa’s body is and they were on the grassy gnoll, too)! Waaah! Rollins didn’t play and it made our lack of depth apparent! Waaah! Someone remembered the collapse of 1964! Waaah! No one laughed when I called the Mets “muts”!
