Phils Offense Looks Green In Loss

On the night the Phillies donned green caps to show their commitment to “going green,” the Phils offense did just that, stumbling en route to a 4-2 loss to the Padres.

Jamie Moyer was his predictably mediocre self, keeping the team in the game by giving up four earned runs in 5.1 innings. His last run came from the arm of Chad Durbin in the sixth.

The offense couldn’t do enough to give Moyer the W, however, as they were grounded by the double play ball. Pedro Feliz hit two. He’s killed more rallies than extended, that’s for sure. Pat Burrell, now at .326, is starting to come down to Earth after his 0-for-3 night. Chase Utley, with a home run in the first, is still hitting well. Geoff Jenkins went 3-for-4, but was wiped out twice by Pete Happy.

JC Romero pitched a scoreless eighth (though he got in trouble), and Rudy Seanez cleaned up in the losing cause. The Phils’ bullpen continues to be the strength. The weaknesses? At times, the rotation, and at times, the offense. Still, finishing April 15-13? I’ll take that.

Victorino in the starting lineup… I guess he’ll be in CF, and have Werth in RF ???

I love Werth playing everyday, and think he brings a lot to the table…he’s had a lot of good at bats, fouling of pitches. He seems to have trouble with fastball up-and-in… but besides that, he doesn’t get fooled that often. Here’s a solid arguement for his playing EVERYday

Werth is hitting .333 vs. Lefties, but only .245 vs. RHP

Victorino is hitting .333 vs. LHP too, but only .176 vs. RHP

Jenkins is hitting only .091 vs. LHP, and .292 vs. RHP

So against LHP, you go with Werth and Victorino. Against RHP, you go with Werth and Jenkins…. I’m guessing the coaching staff already has this in mind, but thats probably the best way to keep everyone fresh, but still getting regular at-bats… that gives you a much deeper bench too… any of those guys along with Coste and Dobbs, makes it tougher for teams with crappy bullpens

Well the bullpen is doing better because they DONT have our old buddy Jose Mesa, or in english, Joe Table.

Feliz does need to step it up… but he’s a really good player, who always starts slow. he’ll only hit you about .250 or so… but he’s got some pop in his bat… and should have won the Gold Glove last year…. somehow David Wright, with the 4th best fielding percentage among 3rd basemen won the glove… weird, right?

I was a big fan of Abraham Nunez… and really thought that he would be a gold glove winner if he played everyday… but he couldnt hit for sh!t… couldn’t even lay bunts down from the 8th spot in the lineup, so I understand why he had to go… and Dobbs swinging a fire stick right now doesn’t help the arguement for Feliz, but he’s a guy that will help you win games.. he’s just gotta get it going soon before everyone starts booing!

Dobbs needs more playing time period.

Feliz is a Walking Double Freakin Play. He needs to bat 8th where thats not going to be as much of a rally killer as it is in the 6 or 7 hole.

When the hell is Manuel going to split Howard and Utley up? Come on already.

    My lineup vs RP
    Rollins-Werth-Utley-Burrell-Howard-Jenkins-Dobbs-Ruiz/Coste

    My lineup vs LP
    Rollins-Victorino-Utley-Burrell-Howard-Werth-Ruiz/Coste-Feliz

BTW, go back and look….before the Phils put Jroll on the DL, I predicted he wouldnt be back by May 1. Not that I’m tooting mey own horn, but…ya know. It looks like he might not be back mid May.

BTW, Moyer looks like the poster boy for “I Love the 8o’s Part 6″.

I know he doesn’t have the greatest speed, but why not put Coste in the three hole, stick the current home run leader in MLB (Clutch Utley) in the cleanup spot and jam Pat “the Bat” in as cinco de safety? Let Howard find his swing, or even Nunez’s swing, back at number seven or eight.

Utley is on pace for a amazing year.

Also some 1st month comments/ questions:

    1) Is it me or do other people think the new jerseys arent as sweet as i 1st thought. I prefer the pinstripes.

    2) What are the odds pat the bat keeps up his production?

    3) When/ Will Howard get his average above .200?

    4) Should Feliz really be the everyday 3rd basemen?

    5) What should charlie do with the outfield situation? Rotate werth, shane and jenkins?

    6) Whats the deal with benson?

Just was wondering what other phillies fans thought of those ideas

My two cents worth of comments to each of your listed questions.

    1) I think most Phillies fans favor the pinstripes. The retro uniforms of the 40′s were introduced this season as part of honoring the 125th anniversary of the Phillies as a franchise. The cream colored uniforms will be use only for home day games. These uniforms were first worn by the Phillies during the 1946-1949 period. the uniforms didn’t helped the team on the field as they had finished last three times, sixth once and fifth once during the years of 1944-48. In 1950, the pinstriped uniforms were used for the first time. The Whiz Kids of the Phillies won their first pennant that year with the last being in 1915.

    2) The odds are very good for Burrell to have an outstanding season. He has shown a quick bat and a good eye. He is completely healthy for this season and it also shows in his quickness as an outfielder with more success in getting difficult putouts.

    3) Patience is the key word for both Howard and the fans. I saw indications in last night’s game that Howard is seeing the ball better and hitting line drives against a tough pitcher (Chris Young).

    4) For defensive purposes, definitely yes. Pitching and defense is what wins championships. I know Kyle Kendrick is most appreciative to see Feliz at third base. :-)

    5) I think Manuel will rotate based on instinct; the “hot” hand; lefty/righty percentages and track record against certain pitchers.

    6) Benson, as posted previously by yours truly and others, had another setback with an recent groin injury. He is shutdown for a few days. If all goes well during rehab, he may join the phillies in June.

I sat through Wed nites game in horror as the Padres slammed balls all over the place. I hate to say it but Moyer has so very little left that it is scary. Bruntlett looks like he has a sore arm and does not seem to be reading balls well off the bat——oh yes-Dobbs needs to be in this lineup once Rollins comes back. You can not have Dobbs and Bruntlett together on the left side.Howard hit some shots that were caught–he is back. Feliz needs to sit for a game or two

PS I have not seen Burrells quickness yet–I must have missed something—you have got to be kidding—I like “The Bats” patience at the plaTe, but quick he is not
