Ryno Beginning To Bust Out; Phils Win

Ryan Howard had another big game, driving in two with three hits in the Phillies’ 7-5 win over the Astros. Among those hits were an opposite-field double and opposite-field home run that bounced somewhere off the large train bridge wall at Minute Maid Park. We can see the improvement — he’s standing in the middle of the box, not the back, and seeing the pitch all the way through. Both big hits were on balls tailing outside, and Howard waited on them until he could strike them to the left. The double was a pure laser; the home run was an absolute bomb.

Howard led a Phillies offense that kept chugging along; Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino set the pace, getting on base four times with hits. Pedro Feliz had two hits, and now has seven in his last 13 at bats. Chase Utley added an RBI single, which padded the lead, grabbed by a pinch-hit, eighth inning home run by Pat Burrell. Charlie Manuel had given Burrell a bench ride, as he was struggling horribly at the plate. So of course, Burrell tattooed a 3-2 pitch to break out of his slump on a pinch. If there’s one thing Manuel does incredibly right, it’s playing his bench.

After Burrell’s homer and Utley’s single, Tom Gordon held the lead in the eighth and Brad Lidge, pitching in Minute Maid Park for the first time as an opponent, seized the save by making best friend Lance Berkman pop out. It was Lidge’s 12th save in 12 chances, and he lowered his ERA to a staggering 0.43.

Kyle Kendrick had a tough start, going only five innings and earning all five Astro runs. The last came with JC Romero on the mound, who blew his fourth save of the season. Sometimes it’s hit-or-miss with Romero and inherited runners. But Kendrick was mediocre, wiggling out of trouble throughout the game until the Astros figured him out in the sixth. Ty Wigginton’s double, which brought the Astros within one and took Kendrick out of the game, came on a hanging changeup. Kendrick still can’t fool anyone with that pitch.

But with this offense most nights, starting pitching doesn’t have to be spectacular. Burrell’s homer was a tremendous lift, as yet again the Phils took advantage of a bad bullpen. And once a game becomes a battle of bullpens, it seems the Phils will almost always win.

Jayson Werth left the game after an inning of defense. He has a right oblique strain — more on him coming.

You’re on target when you said this series with the Astros and their potent (overachieving?) offense will come down to the “battle of the bullpens”. Hopefully, the Phillies have the edge with their pen.

I posted earlier from team reports that Manuel and Milt Thompson have kept after Howard to keep his hands back and let the pitches come deeper into strike zone. This gives him a better “read” of the pitch. He appears to be more consistent with that and getting great results as evident by those opposite field extra base hits and HRs.

BTW, watching the televised game (Comcast), the cameras caught a shot of Pat Gillick and team president, David Montgomery in the stands. It made me pause for thought and wonder if they are there for more than just a visit. ;-) Gillick does have a little history with Houston as scouting director for a brief period around 1974.

Hopefully, Pat “the bat” has recharged the batteries after 3 for 27 and that Ryan Howard is on the cusp of explosion.

We are not a good team right now.

How bout this bullpen??? 4 more shutout innings. Unreal.

The SP situation has to be sorted out soon though. It’s time for Happ. It really is. He CAN’T be worse than A. Eat. After Happ, it’s alomst time to make a huge gamble (like last year) and bring up Bastardo.

I’m glad Victorino is picking up where he left off. It will make Werth’s injury easier to deal with.

Also, have to be happy with Pedro Feliz. His recent hitting has made it easy to start him and keep Dobbs on the bench, where, frankly, I think he thrives most.

How about Wheels calling the HR by Burrell ??? That was pretty cool…. I remember watching vs. the Astros a few years ago… Burrell was up with bases loaded.. it was on both CSN and ESPN…. I decided that if I watched it on ESPN he had a better shot at hitting the salami.. and he did… I guess he likes that park a little bit because of the extremely short porch in LF. Good call sitting him last night vs. Oswalt who can be one of the best in MLB when he is on… HUGE confidence boost for Burrell to come through in that spot.

They said Werth was day-to-day on the radio last night in the bottom of the 8th… at least he didn’t come out right away, but you could tell something was wrong… hopefully he can rest for a few and be back in soon. Big win for our boys last night!!

Tim, Good point with Feliz! He’s a slow-and-steady kinda guy… he’ll strike out and pop-up… but he’ll also hit you a few HR, knock in some RBIs and play a very good 3rd base for you… I think he was a really solid pickup by Gillick… two years from now i’d love to see who plays third, but Feliz can do the job for now

Don: I have to say, I’m liking Wheels more and more this season. He seems to have been a bit more critical and, maybe it’s compared to Matthews (who is getting better) and McCarthy (who isn’t as great as I was hoping), he’s very nice to listen to. Of course, I’d prefer Harry and LA the entire game on TV and Franzke/Wheels/Matthews on the radio.

Hey, did anyone hear Peter Gammons report that the Phils were inquiring about Ryan Zimmerman?

Giuluano: No, where is this from? I can’t imagine them looking at Zim, and I really can’t imagine the Nats thinking about ridding him.

Personally, I hate Wheels and I always have. It seems that all he does is talk about Penn State. And he’s always so negative and then the lovely Harry counters him by being positive.

I’m a bit ashamed to say it, but WIP mentioned hearing it this morning, and then a caller called in to say that he had heard it as well.

I wish I had more to give you…but since I couldn’t find anything more, I figured what better to place to inquire than here.

Okay, Anthony Gargano just stated that he did in fact see the Peter Gammons report. Peter Gammons reported that the Phils were offering Pedro Feliz and another unnamed player for Ryan Zimmerman. Anthony Gargano further stated that his knowledge is that there were not serious discussions.

Harry is a legend… but you gotta admit, he often goes 5-10 seconds without saying anything at all… he’s starting to yell about “…AND A LONG DRIVE…” which turns out to be a warning-track fly ball. Wheels does get annoying sometimes when he pretends that he knows it all… BUT he does know more than most.. has a great memory of games and situations… knows the rules better than anyone else in the booth. I think Scott Graham was good on radio, or at least his voice was very good (rumor has it he was a D!ck to work with and thats why they didnt renew him)

Tom Mac has all but been named as Harry the Ks replacement.. its a shame that they have him interviewing random people and talking about random things during the games.. it seems pretty awkward everytime.. but hes pretty good, and Sarge is getting better…. I could listen to LA full-time because I think he’s funny and def loves what he’s doing

no way we can get zimmerman….thats there franchise with the new ballpark…we get him gillick becomes a legend…then i will give credit to don for supporting this idiot but its not happening

I can’t imagine the Phils being able to offer something strong to get Zimmerman. The only combination that is close is Feliz and Carrasco, but that’s not enough. And it’s not a good idea. This team needs pitching, not more offense. As much as I like Zim, he’s not the right fit.

tim thats still not enough… zimmerman is their FRANCHISE player and the nats gm is notorious for always asking for to much in return. ill take zim for carrasco and another prospect right now…imagine that infeild… we could work with the pitching staff we have if we could land that stud but its not possible. lets get real. but if gillick does make a deal for a player like that it wont end up good just becuase gillick did it… geoff i wanna hear what you think about this as well

I’m in agreement that it doesn’t seem likely that we could get Zimmerman for Feliz and Carrasco. As to the reason why they’d trade him, the thought seems to be that the team isn’t pulling in any fans whatsoever in the new park, and all the money they thought they’d be getting with the new stadium isn’t coming in.

My opinion: I’d make that deal (Feliz and Carassco).

make the deal in a heartbeat

At the risk of offending some “Harry the K” worshipers, just an opinion and nothing more.

I think Kalas is long overdue for retirement. Rarely, if ever, he offers any insight to the game. He’s increasingly making misjudgements in calling plays (“long drive” becomes a pop-up) and pitches (even losing pitch counts). His almost inaudible monotone delivery lulls a listener to dozing. Thank goodness for Chris Wheeler and his thoughtful knowledge and as Don M posted…”he does know more than most.. has a great memory of games and situations… knows the rules better than anyone else in the booth…”. Tom McCarthy does provide interesting facts and anecdotes but it’s often unrelated to game situation at hand. Mathews needs to sharpen his elocution in his delivery so one can better grasp his apparent knowledge of game situations. Ok, that’s it. I’ll probably get some bashing.

With all due respect Bruce, I enjoy watching and lsitening to Harry call the Phils. He may not getem all right. He never was a huge story teller (He left that to Whitey), but his calls of a Phillies game are……in my mind…perfect. I’m only 34 and I grew up in VA, so my only access to the Phillies was through Harry and Whiety on 1210 at night.

I guess you could say he’s kind of a throw back announcer because he’s focused more onthe game than all of the external distractions like most announcers are. That’s what I prefer.

Long live Harry The K. To me, he’s Phillies baseball.

On the Radio… Harry is the man… he sets the scene of a nice, relaxing evening at the ballpark.. doesn’t talk too much, lets you hear the crowd in the background, the crack of the bat, etc…

But he’s just too slow to keep up with the constant changing angles and TV cameras… you need something telling you who, what, where, when, why with every shot… like if they show the bullpen and you can’t see the number, or name.. Wheels knows who it is before Harry knows the camera went there. He’s a living legend.. I just think that he is too slow for the game on TV… laid back and easy listening radio could serve him well for another 10 years… where he gets to paint the entire picture himself!

What about LA though. I love that guy. Wish he was on TV. I guess he’s just too obnoxious sometimes? Haha. The best would be bringing Kruk back though.

    any zimmerman updates or what?

i know the nats wouldn’t do feliz and carrasco for zimmerman, but i wouldn’t even want the phils to do that trade. as someone else said, we need pitching, not hitting, but even on top of that: feliz is a very similar 3B to zimmerman! yes zimmerman is better and younger, but does anyone honestly think we could keep zimmerman long term with all the other talent we need to lock up? both guys are great defensively, have above average power, and are inconsistent for average. zimmerman is a little bit better of a contact hitter but not by much. the phillies need to hold pat (both burrell and the figure of speech) and keep their focus on bringing carrasco along at the right pace, while looking for a more immediate #4 starter in the rotation to replace eaton.

Zimmerman isn’t happening; in fact, Gammons refuted that he had a rumor earlier today. It’s nothing. Nada. See ya.

    Chris~

I had similiar thoughts when comparing Zimmerman with Feliz. While Zimmerman is young with a lot of upgrade, he can prove to be a costly investment. He is not a good fit for the team. Let’s keep our top pitching prospects and see what’s available prior to the July 31st trade deadline.

Id do it if theyd accept feliz and a lesser prospect, but not a top ptiching prospect. they DO need quality starting pitching and they havent done anything about it since the lidge trade. sure, in lidge you get a great closer. but you basically didnt get another starting pitcher because myers hasnt been adequate. it reminds me of the eagles and the wide reciever situation. they JUST WONT DO IT. if they wanted to really do what it takes to get top level starters in here they would have done it EVEN IF they had to over pay in a trade for it. i dont care. get it done.

now we have to watch adam eaton tonight. if he gets shelled then i think its time to pull the plug on him. they cant afford to wait. the braves and the marlins arent going to roll over and let you have this division even though its a little weak. theyre still decent enough to make a run at the division so the phils need to take it from them.
