Burrell Gives Eaton Well-Deserved Win

For the third game in a row Adam Eaton looked like a true front-line starter. His good start, coupled with a big two-run home run by Pat Burrell, gave the Phillies a nail-biting 3-2 win over the Reds Tuesday night. The Phils are now a season-best 10 games over .500 and are now 2.5 games in front of the National League East (Atlanta beat Florida, 5-4).
Eaton wasn’t dominant, but yet again hit his spots, threw an effective changeup and limited the Reds chances. He gave up only three hits, walked none, and struck out five. The only run the Reds scrounged against him was an Edwin Encarnacion home run. He threw 87 pitches — 50 for strikes — in his 6.2 innings. At some point it would be nice to see Eaton at least get through seven, but for now the goal is to build his confidence.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the sixth, Burrell delivered with a two-run bomb off Reds starter Aaron Harang. The Phils were able to hit Harang and Reds pitching, but they couldn’t come through in clutch situations. The biggest offender was Ryan Howard, who looked like his April self with seven LOB. They pitched him outside and he bit, grounding weakly or striking out. After a seventh inning strikeout with the bases loaded, Howard received a nice helping of boos.
Luckily the bullpen held on — barely. JC Romero walked Adam Dunn but struck out Joey Votto to end the seventh. Tom Gordon surrendered a leadoff triple to Encarnacion, who scored on a sac fly. But Gordon weaseled out of the inning. Brad Lidge walked two and gave up a hit, but a welcome double play ball and game-ending pop out by Encarnacion made everyone sigh with relief. Pitching for the third game in a row, Gordon and Lidge were clearly taxed and off their game. Maybe Charlie Manuel should’ve had a different strategy.
In the end, however, the Phils hung on. Chase Utley’s games-with-homer streak ended at five (again), but the man still roped two hits, including a jam-shot RBI single in the third. Shane Victorino’s consecutive-game hit streak ended at 14, but his order-mate, Jimmy Rollins, had three hits and two stolen bases. A good sight for sure.
Ken Griffey Jr. walked in a pinch hit appearance. He didn’t get 600. The Phils got the win. We’ll take it.

Starting to really get aggravated with Carlos Ruiz, who doesn’t look offensively adept at all despite the fact that he can handle the staff. Luckily they have Coste.

When Griffey came up there were camera flashes all over; it looked pretty awesome. And yes, our bullpen did make me sit on the edge of my seat a bit but we got the job done!!

ruiz has become a sore to watch hit, just really painful. coste will win the job by the all star break. ruiz is the defensive 3rd game replacement. hell be fine in that role until next season when lou marson makes the big team and backs up coste, of course building towards eventually becoming the starter himself.
i still need a number two starter, even if eaton and myers are pitching well. i just need to feel secure that well have enough pitching for the playoffs. i suppose this team can wait until the deadline because eaton has stabilized to keep his 5th starter spot. myers needs to rebound now and show some stability and dominance on a consistent basis. maybe, just maybe then ill back off if he reels of 5 wins in a row where he goes 7+ each time and gives up less than 3 runs each time while striking out 6 or more each time.

You’re asking for a lot Geoff. lol I’d give him the thumbs up if he could do that 3 times. Hamels can’t even go 5 in a row 7+ innings 3 or less runs, you’re gonna ask Myers to do it?

I was at the game again and hated watching Gordon pitch to Griffey. I booed him then and again when he got out of the inning. I understand he doesn’t want to be the guy to give it up, but at least try to get the Griffey out. It’s not like he’s been red hot or anything. It was sad, the whole stadium was on their feet for four straight balls. Hopefully I’ll go back for one more this series and witness some history.

Well hes our opening day starter….
i suppose i could be happy with three times in a row. if he cant get it right and get it consistent by the deadline id have to advocate packaging him for a better starting option who has proven themselves. im going to advoate getting that guy at every opportunity until they get it done, but whether or not myers is part of that deal is up to him

Geoff when you say that Coste will win the spot by the All Star break I have to disagree, I don’t think there’s a spot to win. It’s not like Coste is a normal back-up player in the sense that he is battling for the starting spot and ready/willing to play every day even if Ruiz is around and healthy. He and Charlie have both said numerous times that Coste is better off playing around 2 out of 5 games because anything more than that and the law of diminishing effects takes over. I think that anyone in their right mind can see that the offense is more potent with Coste in the line-up but he can not do it everyday. Also, when it comes to Ruiz, we’re talking about an 8 hole hitter here. Not too many teams get production from their 8 hole, and if any team can afford not to its the Phillies. I say stick with what they’re doing, if it’s not broke don’t fix it.

Oh, and agreed with the guys above, Gordon should have been at least trying to get Griffey out. Charlie said in the post game that they didn’t want Griffey to hit one out and tie the game. Well I don’t think its any better to bring the go a-head run to the plate.

Hey listen, why would we even pitch to Griffey on an historic night when they intentionally walked Utley on his possible historic night with the franchise. I want him to hit 600 as bad as Utley hitting 6, but not at the expense of the game. Gordon did the right thing !!

Eaton had easily his best start of the season and now has string of three fine performances. Offensively, when you’re hot, you’re hot and, even when the offense is not totally on, you still get the clutch hit and come out on top. Pat “the Bat” strikes again. And even when you’re closer is not super-awesome, he’s still got the big out pitch. Go Phillies.

Totally different situation with the walks of Utley and Griffey. Every manager in the NL would have made the decision to walk Utley in that spot. He’s the hottest hitter in the majors and already had 2 hits at that point last night. Yes, it would have beeen nice to see him go for the franchise record 6th sraught HR game, but it was purely strategy by Baker. Griffey, on the other hand, is not Utley. He’s batting in the .250′s with 6 HR’s. There is no reason to pitch around him with Hairston on deck and Bruce up 3rd. They are both much hotter than Griffey right now and I would much rather not have the tying run aboard and the go-ahead run at the plate when either of them comes to bat.

with coste im saying that he should be playing two out of three games in a series. before ruiz had been getting that but the trend now seems to favor coste getting that playing time on a permanenet basis this season

I was at the game – a very sloppy one all around. Howard looked horrible (must trade), offense left too many men on (flashes of inconsistency), and the bullpen had zero location. We’re going to have to score with runners on tonight if we want to win, Volquez is no joke.

I’m not holding hope for tonight because of that Molotov — Volquez, little clutch hitting last night, Howard looking bad, bullpen working overtime. Maybe if Jimmy can ride this mini-surge into something big and Myers pitches like we know he can we’ll have a chance. I’m thinking Hamels bounces back Thursday — even in the sun — to take the series.

Harang is no joke either. The guy is a good pitcher. That’s why we had trouble hitting and scoring runs in. Hopefully we know how to hit Volquez after seeing him once this season. That guy is lights out.

Watching Adam Eaton get a standing ovation was truly something to see. Without a doubt, it was one of the best games he has pitched since wearing the uniform. I often find myself during his outings waiting for that inning where it all goes up in flames and that has not really happend these past couple starts. I give the man credit where it is due.

It’s very clear that people (Philly sports fans in particular) love negativity. I’m guilty of this myself sometimes, but come on. The Phils won, they’re 10 games over .500 and 2.5 games in first place, and it’s the beginning of June!! I watched the game, and I don’t see how anyone can say it was very sloppy all around. Eaton pitched a great game, Burrell came through huge, and we got two big double plays at key spots. It was a great win for a good team. We’re not going to score 15+ runs every time out. Baseball is a streaky game, understand that. Howard striking out with the bases loaded hurts without a doubt, but he’s hardly a MUST trade. I’m not saying if the right deal comes along where we can get some quality players that it shouldn’t be looked into, but he’s not exactly a lead weight dragging the team down. He wants to produce, and he wants to win. He’s already improved over the last month; give him a chance to work it out. Despite his struggles, his numbers are still respectable. I also think Gordon made the correct move in walking Jr. I think it’s pretty obvious in the fact that he got out of the inning and we got a win. How can anyone argue now, after the fact, that it was a mistake? Hindsight is 20/20, and it worked, where is the argument? The Phillies fans who booed are idiots. So what they didn’t witness history. It wasn’t his last career at bat, he’s still going to hit 600. If we’re up 10 or down 10, pitch to him, but in that spot, it was the smart decision. If every Phils win from now till Sept 28 is a 3-2 win in that same fashion, I wouldn’t be the least bit disappointed. Two more home games and then two huge series at the braves and fish, lets up the Phils can keep it up.

June is going to be our toughest month. Braves and Marlins away. Then you got the Cards at away. Then after that is interleague play and you have the Red Sox and the Angels at home and then you have the A’s and the Rangers away. This is going to be the month for us to prove A. If we’re going to win the division and B. If we have what it takes to win the world season. You’re going up against the clear cut winners of the AL west and the reigning world series champions. Let’s win these games Phils!

Jordan: Burrell has been clutch all year and Eaton was great last night – I’m not taking that away. A win is a win. But let’s not get into the Howard argument, Tim already cleared that up for us a month back. Do yourself a favor and search through the archives – it’s laid out plain and simple why we should trade the guy. So, I won’t go there – that discussion is over, he needs to be traded.
Now onto last night:
Howard was 0-4, had 2 K’S and 7 LOB – UNACCEPTABLE.

they walked chase utley to get to howard, thats so funny. when they start calling howard out like that the other teams know he isnt right. dusty baker is a slippery old manager who would not do that unless he knew howard was really messed up. howard had a nice few weeks where he rebounded but in this homestand hes cooled off. its june, he should be mashing now. his average should be between .270-.300. your cleanup hitter CANNOT have a batting average of .208 or whatever it is now. trading him now is selling too low. i want to trade him, absolutely, but i want to wait til after the all star break and see if anyone will splurge prospects and current players on them at the deadline. otherwise, you flip him at the winter meetings. theres no way id keep him on the team next year unless he is so bad this year that you cant get good value for him and then youre stuck with him.

Just looking at the salaries on the right, Benson only makes $100k? Shoot, I make a $100k. Of course he plays baseball and taps his beautiful stripper wife every night and I sit in front of a computer 10hrs a day, but still. Must suck when he bums a buck from Mike Zagurski for the vending machine.

I shouldve played baseball in college man. clay condrey makes 385k? im pretty sure i could be doing that for a living if i had put the time in. heck, almost anyone in this forum probably could do what he does and collect that money each week. if i cant throw hard enough then i could certaintly play first base. oh well.

I need a question answered – if the Phils win tonight or get rained out and have to play tomorrow (we’ll be there to see Cole snap it up!) a double header, will the Phils let me bring my broom?
I was at the last Rockies game and I don’t remember seeing 1 broom.
I’ll be calling but does anyone have experience with bringing a broom?

Take a look at Griffey’s career numbers against Gordon and pitching around him makes a lot of sense.
Come on: one-run lead, 8th inning, facing one of the greatest sluggers of all time, who also just happens to own the guy on the mound? Of course you walk him (plus, you know the Reds have got to use another bench player to run for the guy).
If Griffey weren’t sitting at 599 we wouldn’t even be having this debate.

obviously not right now but if you worked at it you could be, so could i or anyone. hence saying shouldve played in college and played more in middle and high school than i did. thats the ultimate sports regret. looks at some of these guys, theyre not ultra talented. hes there becuase he worked at it, and you can tell he doesnt have the talent. anyone can fill a role like that if they work hard enough. thats why baseball is so great.

I think we mostly agree that the Phils have been winning, especially the last 2 games with the Reds while NOT playing their best ball.
Yet they won and their bullpen came through again.
So, does that mean their best picther will dominate and they will open up on either Meyers or Hamels or does that mean our bats are going to be even more potent than they have been or Meyers and Hamels tossing gems right now would look really huge – plus, I get to use my new broom!

Mike, I read the posts and comments the first time around, but thanks. It’s easy to post on a blog and throw out all kinds of trade possibilities until you’re blue in the face. But the reality of these deals going down is very slim. And just because we ship Howard out and bring in some other players, what’s to say they don’t shit the bed like any number of the scrubs we’ve had over the years. Howard is proven, he didn’t win rookie of the year and MVP by accident. Don’t get me wrong, it’s embarrassing to have your 3 hitter walked to get to the clean-up, and he was absolutely awful last night, but a guy with his kind of power and attitude in the clubhouse isn’t a cancer to this team.

phillies fans acting absolutely shameful once again last night. when griffey came out to pinch hit the place went nuts. this is absolutely unacceptable. in a one run game in the 8th inning , despite the fact that griffey would have tied the game with a homerun, you could clearly tell that many of the fans in the crowd would have overjoyed to see griffey smack no. 600 even though it might mean the phillies would lose. i am very upset with the way the fans are at the park. people were standing and cheering a player from the other team?????? i’m a big griffey fan, but this is absolutely disgusting behavior for philly fans!!!!

Ryan.. you are a hater… I would have loved to see Griffey hit no. 600! Only 5 players in the HISTORY of baseball have that… two of them are steriod users… and Griffey would be chasing 755 if not past it already if it wasn’t for his injuries in the past.
Classy move by the Phillies fans.
Big time game tonight with Volquez going for the Reds, and Myers for the sillies…. we NEED him to pitch like he did last time out. this should be a great game to watch, lets see how Utley, Howard and Burrell handle one of the top young pitchers in the game

anyone who was routing for griffey to hit that homerun in that situation last night is not a true phillies fan. you shouldn’t be allowed to go to CBP from now on. you probably do the wave in one run games in the bottom of the ninth while lidge is going for the save. probably the same type of people who show up in the third inning and leave in the 8th.

I’m a die hard Phillies fan, I was at my 1st Phillies game when I was 3. I played baseball most of my childhood/teenage life, and I grew up idolizing Griffey. Let’s face it, the Phillies didn’t have much of idols on their team in the 90′s. Griffey is one of the best players to ever play the game, and he was injured a lot and couldn’t accomplish as much as he should have. When I go to a Phils game I get there in the 1st inning and leave in the 9th, even if it’s a blowout, like last year against the Dodgers like 13-3. It’s one game, just one game, and people(myself included a hardcore Phils fan) wanted to see him get his homer. A lot of the people at the game last night aren’t gonna be going to the game tomorrow and they want to see history in the making. You’re a douche for bashing Phils fans that wanted to see him hit his homer. That’s history and to lose a game to witness history isn’t that big of a deal. It’s not football where there are 16 games a season, it’s baseball.
