No game recap today; it’s pretty self-explanatory.
The Phillies are now in the midst of a four-game losing streak, and they’re losing their grip on the NL East lead, now just one game ahead of the Florida Marlins. Today proves to be a huge day, with Cole Hamels on the hill to try and put a stop to this — and this is probably not the appropriate word — mess.
Hamels is coming off a fine performance against the Red Sox, which was the last Phils win. He pitched seven innings and gave up two runs, back-to-back homers by Dustin Pedroia and JD Drew. The Phils offense will face Jered Weaver, who stormed out of the gates with an amazing second half in 2006, but since has been roughed up a lot more. The Mets pounced on him Monday night.
The Phils are just 10-13 in day games this season. Hamels, as we all know, can put on a scary face when he’s pitching with the sun out. But this season he’s been pretty good in day games (2-0, 3.81 ERA). Whatever the case, the Phils need a big performance by the ace today.
Chase Utley is back in the starting lineup. And Charlie Manuel is shaking things up, putting Greg Dobbs in the 2-hole and Shane Victorino in the 6-hole.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (7-4) 3.23 ERA
Angels: Jered Weaver (6-7) 4.73 ERA
Gametime: 1:35 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, possible thunderstorms
Lineup: Rollins, Dobbs, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Victorino, Jenkins, Ruiz, Hamels

Your gameday beer: Today it’s Rapscallion Premier. Rapscallion means one who is mischievous or playful, and the word “scally” is derived from it (so is “scallion”). I’m a fan of the term “scally wag,” which I guess means someone who is playful to the extent of being a problem. And they’re only found on pirate ships. You never hear of a scally wag out in public. That’s kind of sad. While drinking, eat a light sandwich — maybe turkey and sprouts on whole wheat. Hey, we’re healthy here sometimes.
Go Phillies!

Giving Cole a lead after 1 inning would be huge – a great way to get out of this funk.

Story of the homestand: Utley, Howard and Burrell all fail with RISP.

Hey, I live next to Concord, MA (once home of the said Concord Brewery). Is Rapscallion the one that has a kind of bubble gum taste?

hamels is the only guy that gave vlad the chin music. thats what i expect to see done to him. scare him off the plate a little. then blow up the bat next time out.
its good to see utley get out of the slump. i think theyll win this game if they can get to the bullpen.
however these two series should set to rest the argument that the phillies have to go load up at the deadline to even be able to compete with those two teams. on top of that, in the offseason they have to spare no expense and boost payroll to stack this team as best they can. you just cant expect to win if you dont attract elite players.
elite players want long contracts and big money. if you dont buckle down and accept that reality, and stop trying to nickel and dime your way out of that, then youll never win anything.
the general manager just is not good enough to work with this payroll.
ruben amaro also isnt good enough to do that.
so, there are three options in the future.
1) boost payroll to cover up for amaro’s inadequacies.
2) hire someone REALLY good. someone who knows wtf they are doing. billy beane definitely does but hes not going anywhere. someone like him. he can work within a budget and build good teams while maximizing talent and balancing “cap”space.
3) combine steps 1 and 2 but leave amaro out of it. grow a set of balls and try to make your business succeed by taking calculated risks

Manuel is really wasting Vic with the Jenkins/Ruiz black hole.

anyway, ill enjoy the ride this season and well see what happens. ill continue demanding action when i feel it is necessary. but this should all be clear as day now. we know what we need to do to get to where the angels and the red sox are. spend money in the offseason (you have to) and make good moves in season.
the guys that are here simply need to improve their play and do it consistently.
i hope they can get to weaver today. thats the minimum i expect here for the rest of this game

Noone cares about Sarge’s family album or the fact that T-Mac likes everyone loves Raymond. Who hires these guys? Sarge is good when he’s not talking about how great his son is and Harry Kalas is so old now and makes bad judgement calls. Chris Wheeler is annoying. They need better announcers.

see i like the sarge and t-mac and kalas. wheeler is a little bit of a dufuas.
t-mac is misused talent. someone like dei lynam needs to be out in the stands doing goofy reports. t-mac needs to stick to the game. whne he sticks to the game hes a very good announcer. kalas is kalas. the sarge knows tons of baseball. i think he gives you some good stuff sometimes.
i agree that they are misused.

Don’t the last few weeks reinforce the idea that the Phils got lucky to sweep the braves back a few weeks ago? And just beat up crappy teams?

As long as we get to Francisco down 2 runs in the ninth we’ll be ok in this game.

Absolutely Danny, absolutely it does.
Yeah, the Marlins have the best scouts since that group of scouts up in Montreal.

Methinks the team will get a big dressing down after this one. I really hope so.
The problem is against good pitching (aka, guys who don’t just throw fastballs) this offense is not that good. They have to remedy that.

Yes indeed. Good pitchers make them look really bad. They just arent patient enough and they get overpowered. shields shpould be scared to death to throw to ryan howard but hes not. Theyre even farther away from being able to win the world series than i initially thought.

I still think theyll make the playoffs and win the division because the national league is not good. they just arent. but against real teams like this and boston they cant get it done. winning one or two of six games against real competition shows an awful lot. its reality check time for this team. they have tow tough road series that thyd BETTER win. something tells me the oakland A’s might not be sellers at the deadline in a big way. maybe harden but thats it.

that was a stupid idea. steal second base to theyre forced to wlak rollins and make so taguchi try to get a hit off of k-rod.

No chance and hell Taguchi gets a hit – no chance.

Yeah Geoff, I see what you’re saying — but I think getting the guy in scoring position outweighs an 0-12 Taguchi. But either way – we’re not going to win this game.

I disagree Geoff, I DON”T think they’ll win the division. they’ll have a really great shot but i just think the mets are gonna get a timely run and end up getting that div.

and Taguchi pops up to end the game..which means if the marlins win, tehy’ll be tied for first

disgraceful. fraud fraud fraud. to get SWEPT AT HOME by ANYONE! charlie isnt usually hard on them, but i think they have reached a nadir in this season. you just dont get swept at home. its time for him to go in that clubhouse and lose it. its also time to DRAMATICALLY reshuffle the lineup AND shuffle the rotation. let alone personnel acquisitions. they cant afford to lose the next two series. and the athletics have pitching thats very good as well. not good.

I’m starting to get sick of this team. They’re disgusting me and they’re making themselves out to be a mockery. You know people are thinking the Phillies are a joke now. At least Utley got a hit, but he’s not out of his slump. Howard had a good game, so did Rollins. I wonder how the 9th woulda turned out if he pinch ran Taguchi instead of Bruntlett and let Bruntlett pinch hit for Lidge…I am so fucking sick of this shit. I might stop watching them for a while because I’m getting really stressed out. They should be running with this division, but instead they’re choking.

the mets need to be blown up and rebuilt. if the phillies allow the mets to catch and pass them charlie should get fired and THIS team should get blown up (save 5 guys) and rebuilt!!!!! amaro fired, arbuckle fired, AND real owners invited to buy the team. that is how disgraceful it would be to me. that is how fragile things are. you think this team is as good as advertised? obviously not. the mets are garbage. they should keep santana wright and maybe reyes and maine the rest of the mets can go for prospects.
with the talent in this lineup and cole hamels and the bullpen theres no excuse to fail to win a weakened nl east.
if they cant do that then heads need to roll hardcore.

what’s positive to say is that this team has had a terrible homestand……… BUT IS STILL IN FIRST PLACE. FIRST! F….I…..R….S….T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111!!!!
there isn’t a team in the history of the game that doesn’t go through stretches like this. i bet you could go back through the 1927 yankees season and find a stretch exactly like this one. the bats are cold right now, but they’ll heat up. if you are ready to jump off the ben franklin bridge over this then i say go ahead. the city’ll be better off without yas!

Ugh. Taguchi… worthless. I realize his was a strong pinch hitter last season, but he’s shown nothing so far with the Phillies (including defensive advantage over Burrell). That f-up in left field was embarrassing, and does anyone have confidence in him at the plate?
