Happy Father’s Day, dads.
Today marks the final game of a nine-game road swing for the Phils. Currently they stand at 5-3 on the trip after a 3-2 loss to Kyle Lohse and the Cardinals yesterday. Today Brett Myers will try to take the series, and he’ll have to pitch better than his last start, a five-run performance against the Marlins Tuesday. He surrendered three homers in that game, adding to his league-leading total of 18 given up. He has given up four or more runs in half (7/14) of his starts.
Myers and Co. will face Cardinals rookie Mitchell Boggs. Besides having a weird hybrid name, Boggs is a 24-year-old right-hander from Georgia. In his first start he went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits against the Reds in Cincinnati. According to scouting reports, Boggs will work his fastball to set up an effective slider, making him more of a late-inning bullpen type of pitcher. The Phils will need to be patient with Boggs and make him miss with the fastball.
Both Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz are getting the day off — Jayson Werth and Greg Dobbs are in the lineup. Chris Coste, a father for the second time now, is back and in the lineup, as well.
Phillies: Brett Myers (3-8) 5.34 ERA
Cardinals: Mitchell Boggs (1-0) 3.86 ERA
Gametime: 2:15 p.m. EST
Weather: 86, sunny
Lineup: Rollins, Werth, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Dobbs, Coste, Myers

Your gameday beer: Time to pull out a win and finish the road trip 6-3. That would be nice. For today’s drink, go with Old Stock Ale from North Coast Brewery. It’s a long sipper, brewed with classic Maris Otter malt and Fuggles and East Kent Goldings hops. It’s the kind of sweet beer you should enjoy with your dad today, as you sit back and catch the Phils. (Then Tiger’s closeout on Torrey Pines, then the Celtics’ closeout on Los Angeles.)
Go Phillies!

The Phils should put him on the DL for life

Figures, I come back to watching Myers let up a 2 run homer. Hopefully the offense can bail him out, but I don’t see that happening. It would be nice to have a 6-3 road trip, but Myers is garbage. He doesn’t even have trade value anymore. At least Howard’s trave value can be that he’s 4th in the league in RBIs.

I wonder if his poor performance could be connected with the fact they were running him out there every day at the end of last season… he’s not hurt, so the only thing I can think is dead arm.

Steve, that’s no excuse. I know there’s a pitcher in baseball, forget who, that moved back into the starting rotation from the closer role and is having a tremendous year. I think it’s someone on the Cubs maybe? Smoltz did it a few times in his career(although Myers is no Smoltz.) I don’t even want to hear that excuse, especially now that it’s half way through June.

NC Jason – I see your point about Lidge. I should clarify and say that I think the move to bring Myers back in the rotation was the right move at the time, however, its apparent that Myers is too much of a selfish headcase not to pitch for the team instead of pitching for his own stats. You can see in his pitching that he has no clue how to adapt to the kind of stuff that he has for the day, its always the same gameplan – rear back and throw as hard as you can.

This is terrible. He just doesn’t give them a chance to win anymore. You can’t give up extra base hit after extra base hit, homer after homer, every time you take the mound and still warrant a spot in the rotation of a team with this much talent and potential. Myers, more than anyone, is keeping the Phillies from grabbing the East by the throat because they just don’t have a chance to win every fifth day.

And now guys are swinging for the fences. Well, I guess I can go for a run, shower and get ready for Tiger’s big day.

Clearly Myers has to pitch better – I just can’t explain how he’s throwing his fastball straight down the middle (if not up in the zone) and with such limited velocity – for a guy who was a top closer last year, and who has been decently reliable as a starter (though I’ve never felt he was a top guy starting), it just doesn’t make any sense. I agree though, if they’re going to let him go out there every 5th day, he’s gotta wake the hell up.

Here is a open question – I hear all about how Moyer prepares with video, pitch charts, etc. What is Mayers pregame / time between starts like? Does he put forth the time or does he just sit on his fat ass because he said earlier he does not like to long toss?

Between his crappy pitching and the Phillies lack of scoring runs for Hamels and Eaton, this will be a rough road to September. I wish I could email Pat Gillick and tell him bring Carrasco up or something. Honestly, at this point, a 4 year old could go out there and throw better than Myers.

Whoa!!! He got a hit. He’s better at hitting than he is pitching apparently. Maybe he should bat clean-up for Howard and let Howard pitch. That might be better for the both of them.

Good news guys, Maine gave up 5 runs today too!!
Of course that was over 6+ innings, instead of Myers display.

If Ryan Howard hits a grand slam right here it will restore all of my faith in him, but chances are he’ll K.

haha NC JAson. I don’t even know why he’s in still. What is Charlie thinking? If he can get a 1-2-3 inning I’ll feel very confident considering Victorino can lead off next inning pinch hitting for Myers.

Pat the Bat: Man or Machine?

Machine. See, Myers loves to settle down later in the game. It’s unacceptable. If he let up 2 or 3 runs early in the game I think I’d be okay with that, but he let up 5. So unacceptable.

Glad we can both come to terms NC Jason. Other than his error he’s had a good series against the Cards. It’s probably because his mommy and daddy are in the stands.

IS La Russa stupid? Utley has more homers against lefties than anyone in the majors. I’m smelling a game winning homer right here.
