The Phillies jump into Interleague Play tonight with the first of a three-game set against the American League’s best team, the World Champion Boston Red Sox. It’ll be a doozy here in Philly; Red Sox fans will be invading the Bank, but Phils fans will show their spirit just as much. The series is being highly touted as a World Series preview, and no doubt it is.
Cole Hamels gets the start after a great performance in a loss to the Marlins. He’ll face Bartolo Colon, who has been pretty decent since joining the Sox and coming back from injury. He represented a possible addition to the team’s pitching corps at a low-risk/high-reward standpoint. Instead the Phillies took a flier with Kris Benson, who is still slowly rehabbing in Clearwater.
The Phils and Sox represent two of the country’s more glamorized franchises. Big-name players abound. Whose big-five would you rather take? The Phils’ Howard, Utley, Burrell, Rollins and Hamels or the Sox’ Ortiz, Ramirez, Lowell, Beckett and Dice-K?
Of course, Ortiz and Dice-K are both injured and not playing tonight, though Matzusaka is in Lehigh Valley pitching against the IronPigs in a rehab start. Enjoy this one; this series should be fun.
A thunderstorm watch is in effect.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (6-4) 3.27 ERA
Red Sox: Bartolo Colon (4-1) 3.41 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 81, thunderstorms
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Ruiz, Hamels

Your gamenight beer: Don’t worry, I won’t recommend anything from the Boston Beer Co. (Sam Adams) or the Harpoon Brewery. No, I’m staying local. Tonight it’s Flying Fish ESB Amber Ale. It’s a top-three for me, a dry but delicious ale that gets you tipsy quick. Good for warm nights. Eat a nice steak dinner with it.
Go Phillies!

haha well said Danny. Anyway, onto trading Howard for a pitcher, he better net someone young like Lincecum or Volquez or someone extremely proven like Sabathia or Lackey.

were to cheap to sign howard so get rid of him for a ton and sign cole….dont say hes back till hes back please…. 2 good games and 2 ok games and 40 bad gmaes doesnt mean hes back

howard isnt worth wat hes goin gto demand…200+ k’s each year aint worth close to a-rod number no matter how many homeruns. money could be better stuff then howard plus the prospects we’d net to stay good for years

I actually do think he’s back now. I think his dad grounded him when he was at home for being a choke artist.

It depends on what we can get Chris…why trade him for prospects right now? I’d rather have Howard when we’re trying to win a championship rather than some prospects for the future.

Oh, that’s what I was saying. I wouldn’t trade him for prospects right now. It’s not worth it. I’d trade him right now for an incredible pitcher though.

Exactly what I was thinking. Utley needs to step it up.

howard’s been great the past few games.
i do agree with chris on a few counts that if it’s between signing cole long term or howard, you sign cole. and i do agree to keep burrell next year over signing howard long term, especially if you can get value for howard in a trade.
but to say a guy has been awful for 40 games when he’s leading the team in rbi’s still makes me laugh. a lot.

This is the type of pitching perfromance that can set Hamels apart. The 2 HR suck but solo jobs rearly hurt. Hamels has looked really good thus far.

jenkins, more than any other phils signing is the one that drives me crazy.
we have people complaining burrell isn’t worth his money, myers, eaton, howard, you name it.
and we give jenkins 14 million over 2 years to be a bad platoon player. that’s the worst gillick decision to me, by far.

can we please get off of howards back a little, he is what he is with the strikeouts, but he is batting over 300 with RISP and he is now tied for the NL lead in RBIS. Also, do you remember how at this time last year Burrell was terrible and by the end of the year he was at his career averages. so once the year is over howard is going to have 40-50 homers and 130-140 rbis and bat somewhere around 260-280.

came in batting .329 with RISP, and is 2-2 tonight i think

It’s because of how incredibly hard they made it to get tickets. It helped pick out the Red Sox fans so that only Phillies fans could go.
To those of you watching CW not ESPN did anyone notice that they showed Hamels in the dugout and he was talking to Kendrick, Eaton, and Moyer, but Myers wasn’t with them? It was like that all game too. There were several times they zoomed in on the 4 of them chatting it up. They’re probably talking about how to pitch against these guys and other useful information, but the head case is probably in the clubhouse beating his wife.

I was thinking the same thing, Brian. And I LOVE it. It’s Philadelphia DAMNIT!!! Hopefully all the Boston fans will stay home tomorrow and watch the Celtics lose, while keeping an eye on the Red Sox losing as well.

no problem scot, also Durbin has to be one of the best signings the Phils have had in a long time. The thing that has been pissing me off with people on here, is the way that people complain here, it sounds like we are in 3rd place or something. This is what gives philly fans the bad reputation, which I always hear about. So how bout we talk about the positives more. Thanks!!!

amen, keith. living just outside nyc, listening to ny talk radio and hearing teh mets fans talk i laugh my ass off. then i come here, and for some reason we sound just like mets fans, even though we are 6 1/2 up on them. it makes no sense to me.

It seems like Utley and Howard just can’t be hot at the same time. It’s like they pick up eachother’s slack.

Phil, I noticed that too. Where is Myers? It’s great to see our starters teaching each other stuff (and not just Moyer mentoring Hamels and Kendrick since even Eaton was there and they all seemed to be discussing things with each other). I don’t know what to do with Myers but I think that trading him would probably be the best for both the Phillies and Myers. I think he may turn it around someday as a starter or a closer, but it will never be here, like what has happened with Gavin Floyd.
