Myers ‘Irritated’ By Booing During Griffey’s AB

One uncomfortable trend that has popped up in this series is fan booing when Ken Griffey Jr. has been walked. We all know Griffey is one swing away from his 600th career home run. Last night in the eighth inning Myers walked Ken Griffey Jr. He had just lost his no-hitter and was battling to keep it a one-run game.

Myers had this to say to David Murphy:

“It kind of irritated me a little bit. I just don’t understand. I know they want to see a home run hit, but not in a tight game like that, especially (Tuesday) and (last night). They should be pulling for us. Yeah, he’s going to make history and hit a home run, but if he does it here or he doesn’t, he’s going to do it at some point. You’re supposed to be here patting us on the back. Believe me, I tried to go after him. I wasn’t pitching around him. I’m not scared of any hitter.”

Myers is absolutely correct. What’s with these fans? So Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 600th home run at Citizens Bank Park while you’re there. What are you going to do? Tell everyone you know you saw it?

I was at the game where Jim Thome hit his 400th home run (oddly enough, against the Reds). Did I parade around after the game and said I saw it? No, I didn’t.

Murphy said the fans are booing the situation, not the player. I don’t care. The situation involves Myers and is occuring at a high-pressure point of the game, where a win or loss can be decided.

Memo to fans: Stop booing Phillies pitchers. Myers pitched the best game of his season (and one of his best ever) and you boo him because of a stupid milestone? Get your heads on straight.

Let Griffey hit #600 in FLA or ATL. I dont give a shit. They should boo Griffey and Dusty for sitting his ass down 3 straight nights if it matters that damn much to them. Not true Phillies fans in my mind.

Somebody tell Myers that we were booing walk #6… I wanted to see Griffey hit a fly-out, or strikeout, and then at least we know that our guys weren’t throwing around him… if you make $8.5 million a year, and you are trying to throw strikes, but you can’t… we should still cheer for you…

Myers got a standing ovation last night when he left the game.. to knock the fans for booing that situation is not smart from him.

Nobody wants to see Griffey hit a home run to beat the Phillies just for the sake of setting a record… BUT… a lot of people paid good money, hard-earned money, to go see Griffey this week, they saw him come to the plate only twice so far.. and walk both times… using Myers own quote, THAT “kind of irritated ME a little bit”

The fans that booed Gordon and Myers for walking Griffy are idiots and I don’t associate myself with them. I’m glad he said what he said.

Chris…I think he’s still a little hurt or is scared of getting re injured. I’d rather him not run out ground balls if that’s the case. Let him get 100% again. I sprained my ankle when I was in 5th grade(also a ball player back then) and I missed the whole season and was in pain for about 6 months. Even to this day it still feels weird some days. Ligaments will never heal the same after a sprain.

thank you brett for calling out those fake ass fans. there’s been a serious infestation of them since the phillies became a trendy ticket.

and yea. myers did get a nice ovation when he left the game last night after throwing an absolute gem……. (almost as big as the one Jr. got just for walking out to the plate)

    absolutely sickening.

I still don’t get this. I am a die hard Phillies fan. I was a fan of them when Bowa was the coach, I mean come on that was bad, but I don’t understand how you can not cheer Griffey. That guy has had a tremendous career and is one of the best ball players of all time. How can you not show the guy respect? I mean I understand where Myers and everyone else is coming from, but to bash people cheering Griffey is a little ridiculous. Give the guy respect for the career he has had.

Half the people at those games are from new jersey anyway. not saying new jersians are fake fans because many are devoted but a lot of them are totally bogus fans.

believe it or not, although im harsh on the team and some of the players sometimes in commentary; i dont boo when im at the games. i kind of just stand or sit there upset when thigns go bad, but i dont boo and insult the players and stuff. thats retarded high school behavior.

    Phil,
nobody is telling fans not to cheer Griff. One of the best moments of the season in the park was two nights ago when the crowd gave Griffey a standing ovation as he came to the plate before his at bat. That was terrific. I couldn’t have been prouder of fellow Philly fans when they did that.
But the worse moment came shortly afterwards and was repeated last night for Myers. To boo your own pitcher for walking Griff, when they are doing there best to put the team in a position to win is just simply moronic.
Last season the division was decided by one game. It could be the same this year. If I had the choice of seeing the Phils clinch the division at home against the Nats in the final weekend, or seeing Griff help win the game for the Reds with a history making homerun, I know what I am picking.
The booing of our own players is just cartoonish and sad. Cheer Griff’s career. Don’t boo our own pitcher trying to win a game.

Okay, I agree with that. I don’t agree with the boos at all. I just don’t think anyone should disrespect Griffey, and if Myers or Gordon gave him #600 I’d cheer for him. How could you not? That doesn’t make me not a Phillies fan, it just means I’m a baseball fan.

I think you guys are missing the big picture here. This is Philadelphia. We are starving for any sports milestone because they are few and far between for us. I don’t support booing any Phillies, but the fans wanted to see history and it shouldn’t be taken personally by Myers.

Cry baby Brett needs to keep his mouth shut and just focus on the pitching. Don’t hate on the fans for wanting to see history. Instead, keep pitching well and take us to the World Series.

I totally agree with Scott. He said it all and there is really nothing more I can add to that. Winning the game is the TOP priority. If “history” is made by the opposing player, cheer if you so desire but please DON’T boo your Phillies pitcher for trying to keep his team in the game. I would think MORE than a few Phillies players (besides Myers) were irritated with the mindless booing.

I have no problem at all with cheering Griffey, I would have done the same if I was at the game. But booing Myers, who pitched amazing last night was just unacceptable.

    Leave Brett Myers alone

I think the fans wanted to see Myers “go after” Griffey, I can’t imagine any of them were hoping for a homerun…unless one of them caught it (as the thing is said to be worth about $100,000 even before it’s been hit).

We were voicing our opinion about the situation at hand…no one watch Myers pitch and thought he did anything but a masterful job. But when a big gun got up there, they were hoping for a K and instead got a BB, it was a regular spelling bee out there.

Why is it always assumed that when we boo, we are booing the person and not the situation? When you are rear ended by a car are you pissed that you got rear ended or that there are Toyota’s in the world?

Let the fans voice their fleeting feelings.

If you “fans” boo me again, I’ll walk 8 people nex time out, instead of just 6.

You say the fans are “voicing” their opinion (booing) about the 8th inning “situation”. The Reds were leading 1-0 and Myers pitching brilliantly with a one hitter though a bit wild. He was careful not to make a mistake pitch to Griffey. Griffey had a pitch to hit and fouled one off. Myers pressing and with a hitter’s count missed the plate with the hard heater. It’s was Myer’s 6th walk and the one he didn’t want to issue to lead off an inning and down by a run. Some fans booed. Is that the “situation” you’re referring to?
