Offense Wastes Another Quality Start, Phils Lose 6th Straight

It’s difficult to keep coming up with fresh verbs to describe the offense, so I’ll just say the offense sucks. They yet again couldn’t score enough runs to suffice in a 5-2 loss to the Athletics. It was the Phillies’ sixth straight loss, yet somehow they’re still in first place in the National League East.
Jamie Moyer pitched splendid for the first six innings, striking out nine while taking advantage of a large strike zone and eager A’s hitters. Then in the seventh, a couple men got on base ahead of Emil Brown. The .246 hitter of course launched the winning homer. The Phils couldn’t match the A’s three runs, and Oakland tacked on two for good measure.
Two big moments defined the ineptitude of the offense. In the first inning Shane Victorino singled and Chase Utley walked. The song remained the same: Ryan Howard grounded into a fielder’s choice and Pat Burrell struck out. Why can’t they get one single? Just one?
Then in the seventh the Phils loaded the bases with one out. Carlos Ruiz, of course, hit into the most surefire double play I’ve ever seen. Now at .222, Ruiz is no longer an offensive option for this team. I now dislike seeing his name in the lineup card.
Not a big fan of Geoff Jenkins, either, who struck out three times (looking badly on all of them) and lowering his average to .244. Utley went hitless — he’s in a 1-for-29 or something — and is now at .289. Seriously, Utley’s at .289. What the hell is wrong with this team?
In my most emotional of moments last night I wondered if the Phils would ever win another game. That’s silly. But no longer is this just a troubling matter — this team really looks lost. It’s as if they have forgotten how to hit a baseball. The closer to the abyss we get the more I want to strangle these guys for looking so heartless. I know they’re better — they have to be, right?

I really don’t think we can trade Marson.. It is becoming more and more clear that Carlos Ruiz can’t hit at this level… and Coste, even by his own account, can’t play everyday. Was there any doubt that Ruiz was going to hit into that double play last night???
Moyer looked good again, the offense looked lost again. Burrell hit a home run but he looks REALLY bad lately… his avg has taken a steep drop the past two months. Rollins hasn’t shown up either since the win against Boston…
What can they even do to shake things up???

Last night was very frustrating. Moyer pitched very well, and got no support. And that Ruiz DP was a crusher. Watching the game, I could see why guys like pitching to him… but man, he is such an easy out(s) right now.
I’ll be in the stands tonight hoping for better.
Go Phils!

The worst part is, that as much as we have complained about the pitching, they are not the problem. In this losing streak, the scores have been 3-0, 7-3, 7-1, 6-2, 3-2, 5-2. Every starting pitcher has taken a loss and Moyer got tagged for two. I think part is that the Phils have not been able to score early in games anymore, so any mistake by the starter has been magnified. Burrell’s homer last night gave the Phillies a lead for the first time in 8 days. Like Tim mentioned, last night’s first-inning rally killer really showcases the problem.

I often leave my dinner in the oven just a few pitches…..err I mean…..minutes too long. Then I have to eat burned meat. This guy that works for me, pedro tried to peel of the burnt parts but then my other employee Carlos accidentally threw my entire meal in the garbage. I hope I learned my lesson.

Last night was a game that had me excited. Moyer was on fire and to have the game end the way it did was like being punched in the face. Part of me says it is something that they will get out of. The other part says that this team ran out of gas much earlier than they should have. Hopefully they can snap out of this.

I was at the game last night, what an embarrassment!!! I blame Uncle Charlie for last night’s loss for the Fremont A’s of Oakland. He should have taken Moyer out before the 7th even started. At the end of the 6th, Moyer was around 100 pitches. Who leaves a 45 year old in with 100 pitches. We all know Moyer usually only goes about 5 or 6 innings. It was a solid outing, let the bullpen do its job Charlie!!!!

I agree JPK, I thougt Charlie was taking Moyer out when he visited the mound after the bloop single to center. At that point, he’d gotten 6.1 great innings out of Moyer and had Durbin ready. Last season I could see leaving Moyer in when the best middle relief option was Geoff Geary. But this season the pen is a strength. Moyer will get hit eventually, so don’t take any chances especially in a 1-run game. Same thing with Myers on Saturday. But I digress…
I also wonder if Gillick should be looking for bats at the deadline in addition to arms. The starting pitching is good enough to get to the playoffs, but after Hamels who’s gonna win a big game against Dan Haren, Ryan Dempster or any #2 in the AL? As for the lineup, it’s no time to panic but a guy like Xavier Nady might be a relatively cheap acquisition who can provide some juice to the #6 or 7 hole. The more I watch Werth and Jenkins, the more I realize RF is a big problem for this team

It’s time to shake this team up ladies and gentleman. Someone that thinks they’re important needs to be shipped out of town. Myers, Howard, Eaton, Ruiz, Jenkins, because I think most of them think they are untouchable. It doesnt really matter at this point who the hell it is.

Jenkins and Werth have it tough.. cause how can you get into a groove when you only play 3 or 4 times a week. The everyday starters are the ones that lead the team, and the ones that need to step it up.. If Rollins, Utley, Howard, Burrell… and Carlos $@#&%ing RUIZ were hitting the ball, we wouldn’t need to talk about the role players.
I think we might see Werth gone at the deadline.. I dont know who else they can move and get anything in return.. I dont think they should trade Victorino. They have been using Madson a lot lately.. is that because they are trying to add to his trade value..or was he hurt??

I don’t know how you can all blame Manuel. You can’t see a homer by Emil Brown there, and Moyer had been pitching extremely well. Face the facts: One run isn’t enough to win a game. It just isn’t.
Madson is in the games more because he’s been playing the Durbin role. Durbin’s been playing the Gordon role more. And Gordon? Read the newest post.
Please. Jenkins shoudn’t be looking that bad at the plate. He’s a hitter. Put it in play.

this keeps up, turn it around, and become selllers. Myers, Howard, Burrell, Dobbs & Werth – Ruiz if a team needs a catcher. limp thru the season. return could be a ton of propspects, look out in 2010!

Tim~ have you really took a good look at Jenkins’ swing this season? He takes a huge uppercut swing on every pitch. I haven’t look at his stats but I got to believe he has far more flyball outs than grounders.

He hits more flies than grounders, that’s for sure. He feasts on low balls, obviously. So Blanton just dialed up and got him swinging for high stuff. It’s pretty easy to beat Jenkins.
And Oz, I wouldn’t throw around the “s” word. I mean, it’s June. Sure this is a real problem right now, but it’s June. This team is better than this.

Tim – I agree completely they have to swing the bats… But if anyone is expecting Werth of Jenkins to be able to carry the team, while in a platoon role.. it ain’t gonna happen.. it takes time to get comfortable at the plate. and if you only start every other night, its tough to get comfortable.
I really think the “team leaders” are the current issue… We should still score 5 runs a game even if our 6,7,8 hitters don’t do a thing… our 1-5 hitters aren’t doing anything this past week….
They will be fine, and they are still one of the best teams in the NL.. but it sure doesn’t look like the World Series is a given right now

I’m 90% sure that Manuel, Milt Thompson, and Rich Dubee would have more productive than the players they coach were this week…
Its EARLY in the baseball season still… still a month away from the trade deadline means that there is lots of time left.
Even without Gordon’s injury, he was still ineffective, and needs to be replaced… Durbin is fine with me!! But I agree..before we go hard after Fuentes, lets see if anyone in the farm is legit…

The pitching has been halfway decent by league standards during this slump. Really good teams don’t through skids like this. It’s a fundamental flaw in the way this team is built. Too many streaky hitters who strike out too much, and they’re all doing it at the same time. It’s as simple as that.

If you told me in April this team would have a 6 game losing streak at the end of June and still be 4 up on the Mets and more on the Braves, I woulda thought you were crazy.
Still, the complete and total lack of hitting up and down the lineup, it’s shocking. There is really no excuse for this many guys to be cold at once.

Werth should be playing everyday in right. There’s no if ands or buts about it. Werth is way better than Jenkins.

This offense blows right now.
If the Mets and Braves weren’t underachieving, we’d be in 3rd place. This is a mediocre team and 2008 has been a disappointment so far.
Sorry, but that’s the facts.

Ok guys can we stop overreacting now ? The Marlins are playing as well as they possibly can and they still trail us, whilst the Mets and Braves just aren’t as good as they believed they were heading into the season. Every team has a bad losing streak at one time or another, but this one just happens to be magnified because it came over a series of big games that grabbed alot of attention, and because they built hopes up so high after the previously good play leading up to the slump. Ruiz has been horrible and should simply become Coste’s back-up until Coste proves he is not a capable starter. If Coste can do it as a back up then why not as a starter ? Jenkins needs to get shipped out of town; he’s just a crap player. Go out and get a Xavier Nady type player who is average, which is an upgrade on Jenkins. Werth goes back to being a super sub in the OF, and you make the lineup less lefty heavy in the process. And with Gordons latest injury i’d move Myers to the pen to set up Lidge, and then go trade for a second ace, i.e CC or Bedard, posibly even a Maddux.

i agree with fred, it is only june & teams do slump, but some people just look horribbllleee carlos (double play) ruiz & geoff ( i swing at anything )jenkins. I really think they need to put myers back in the pen, i don’t know how effective he’ll be in there but he has to be better there than as a starter, because it sure as hell can’t get any worse. We do need a 2nd starter because after hamels ur not too sure what ur going to get on a day to day basis. Hopefully we go and get our act together tonight because i cant watch one more loss!

Amanda, does the name Jamie Moyer ring a bell? He has been really good this year and easily a good #3 guy. Adam Eaton has been pitching like a #4. Kendrick needs to go back to AAA to figure out his change up out pitch. I know he’s a contact ground ball guy, but if you’re going to be a contact ground ball guy you need to have an out pitch if he gets ahead of the count. He just doesn’t have that at all. That’s what separates the Webb’s, Wang’s, and Lowe’s from the Kendrick’s.

yea i do agree with you, jamie moyer has been really good this year, i meant that we need a good #2 thats what we dont have, moyer has been a good #3

the other thing about Moyer is you never know when his body is going to break down. If he were to gt hurt we’d end up with Kendrick as our second best starter, much like the end of last season

This is one reason that I fear that their “big addition” will be Maddux — do we really want the two longest playing big leaguers as the bulk of our playoff rotation?
Kinda off topic, but anyone think we could (and should) get Bedard in a package that looks something like this:
Bedard and Johjima
for
Ruiz (exchange of struggling catchers), Taguichi (Japanese connection a plus for Sea), minor league pitcher (Happ/JDurbin/preferably not Carasco or Outman), bullpen piece (Condrey, Gordon, Madson or Seanez) and a AA/AAA position player(Harman?)
7 player swap — The quality of minor league pitcher they get would depend on which bullpen piece they took
Myers sent to be set-up man to protect the team if Lidge leaves or become a major trad piece when he resigns
