The Phillies signed Zach Collier, the 34th pick in the draft, taken in the first compensation round. He received his slotted value, which is about $1M. Collier is a 17-year-old high school outfielder who has been said to be deep on tools. He’ll report to the Gulf Coast League next week.
The Phils also signed New Jersey right-handed pitcher Jason Knapp, the 71st overall pick. And to round it out, they inked 10th round pick Jean Rodriguez, a catcher from Puerto Rico.

Let’s hope this year’s draft selections by the Phillies will continue to produce some major league quality players as part of retooling their farm system after the 1990′s drought.
I like Jason Knapp whom I saw pitched in one game for his high school at North Hunterdon Regional in Clinton, NJ.
Also in mentioning the 90′s farm situation, I found an interesting article on the Baseball Think Factory website. The header is “Joe Saunders Says He Got Shaft From Phils After Draft (1999)”.
