Phils Battle Back To Take Series Over Marlins

“We don’t get worried. We get excited,” said Chase Utley during TBS’ telecast of today’s Phillies/Marlins game. Utley was speaking about how the Phils come back so often when facing big deficits.

The Phils did it again, taking a 5-1 deficit and turning it into a 7-5 win to take two of three from the Marlins. They recaptured first place in the NL East and improved to 5-1 on the current homestand.

The very same Utley keyed the comeback with his Major League-leading 20th home run of the season, his third in as many games. Geoff Jenkins tied the game with a pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning, just another case of Charlie Manuel plugging in the right guy, and also, another case of the Phils bench coming through as very possibly the best in baseball. By the way, Manuel pressed more correct buttons in this game — TJ Bohn as a defensive replacement; leaving Jamie Moyer in the game in the seventh inning.

And in the seventh inning, Pat Burrell — pressing as of late — struck a two-run double to grab the lead. The win went to Jamie Moyer, who made a bunch of good pitches, but threw three bad ones — an inside fastball that hit Jeremy Hermida, and two low fastballs that the husky Mike Jacobs launched into the seats. Yet again Moyer was serviceable, and collected his sixth win of the year as a result.

Moyer left after seven innings, giving way to Tom Gordon to settle in and subdue the Fish, and Brad Lidge to brush them aside with his usual grimy offerings.

These are the wins that comprise a championship team. Some teams when down 5-1 will lie down and call it a day on a warm Sunday afternoon. Most teams — including past Phillies teams — would battle a bit before falling short. This team, however, wins.

The Team to Beat is where they belong. What did you think about the ball that plunked Hermida? Moyer seemed to disagree with the call. Did the ump get it right?

I was in the stands but in the 300s and I had the wrong angle but it was really weird cause it didn’t look like it hit him at all.

Can anyone tell me why I’m on this team? People keep saying that I am the “abraham nunez” of this year’s team. I understand that we are both .200 hitters but he was good with the glove. Me, not so much. I am the worst outfielder on the team. Somehow I continue to show up in the lineup while Werth is on the DL. Inexplicably, I am also a frequent late inning defensive(?) Substitution. My teammates who have been here for a while tell me that I bring back memories of doug glanville in his final season. I do not understand this comparison.

The Phils are once again on their throne . . . . . So Taguchi? I don’t know about him, but Tadihito Iguchi was a a big improvement for the team last year . . .

    Clare: congrats on graduation.

So Taguchi: Is there even anyone on this team who was here during Glanville’s last year? I know I’m getting old, but it feels like the Glanville era was ages ago.

Note to ownership: How ’bout them fans!!! Showing up in HUGE numbers. Hungry. Excited. Wanting more. You have them money, now reward them and keep filling the seats! Shoot for winning a championship, finally. Do you want it as much as the fans?

I appreciate all the fans coming out to the games at our ballpark. On behalf of the ownership group, who prefer to remain unconscious, I’d like to assure the passionate fans of Philadelphia that, despite the fact that we are a small-market team, we will be able to put a competitive ball club on the field for years to come without jeopardizing revenues.

More important than winning is feeling good about ourselves and making money. Today, we in the Phillies front office feel great. We hope you will continue to join us.

Great Day for the good guys. I wanted to say something to our ” friends” in Miami who think that Uggla is the new Premiere Second Baseman in the NL. Uggla went 1 for 12 this weekend. Enough said.

The Phillies aren’t a small market ball club. They can spend $110 million, they just aren’t right now because they don’t have to. They have the potential to be in top 10 in payroll.

How about Geoff Jenkins hitting the piss out of that ball…

If they split with the RED HOT reds..that gives them a 7-3 homestand… I want a 8-2 homestand though, so lets go fightins…

Hamels looks human his last 2 starts… Moyer looks pretty good. Who serves up Griffey’s 600th HR, Kendrick, Eaton, or Myers ??

Myers…he likes to give up the long ball.

We played with Doug Glanville but I think it was jeff cooper and mark anderson that said those nasty things about So The Gooch

As June begins, Manuel and pitching coach, Dubee should carefully monitor Hamels’ pitch counts for the remainder of the season. He threw 124 pitches three starts ago and 110 in the next game at Washington. He’s pitched a lot of innings in those two starts and that might have had something to do with his difficulties last weekend. Given Hamels’ history on injuries, Manual and Dubee have to be diligent with Hamels regardless of game situations. After all, this season’s bullpen is second to none.

I agree with oyu Bruce. Keep him at 100 pitches for a little while. Honestly though, I just think it’s a mental thing.
