Phils Looking At Fuentes; Is Castro Included?

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (thanks, 700 Level), the Phillies are pursuing Brian Fuentes. The Rockies reliever has 13 saves and a 2.05 ERA this season.

Sherman writes the Phils indicated sending pitcher Fabio Castro in a deal for Fuentes, but he says Castro is a 22-year-old right-hander. He is neither 22, nor a righty. Top prospect Carlos Carrasco, however, is a righty, but 21.

Castro is not 22, and not right handed. Makes you wonder if this writer got the wrong name.

Carrasco is right handed, and starts with “C”, just like Castro (not to mention Cookie, which is good enough for me) but isn’t 22 either.

Who knows who he’s really talking about?

I don’t think bullpen is our biggest concern.

Castro is terrible and throws only 50% strikes.. he walks more people than a retirement home nurse..

You’re right — it could be Carrasco. I’ll see if anything changes there.

“..INCLUDING Castro..” and who else for Fuentes? Ahh-h, there’s the catch.

    Carrasco is 21 I thought?

Sherman got something wrong. It may have been Castro and a lower-level prospect; may have been Carrasco. Meh.

Better not be Carrasco. I don’t wanna see Carrasco go for a bullpen pitcher…

If its Castro and a low level prospect for Fuentes I would do it. This team needs another lefty in the bullpen and a legit set-up man since who knows how long Tom Gordon is going to be able to hold up. The Phillies need a starter more than a lefty reliever though. I don’t really care who they trade if they are able to land a good player, but I would consider Carrasco and Marson as the only untouchables.

The Phillies might need another OF if the DFA Taguchi. I think that they should just bring up Snelling (assuming he isn’t hurt) after they DFA Taguchi and then use Bruntlett as Burrell’s pinch runner.

BTW, hilarious news. King Felix just rocked a grand slam on his first pitch of the year off, who else, Johan.

And it was legit. Opposite field ocean liner into the right field power alley.

Tim, I guess you’re not worried about bad karma…the mets could easily still come back early in the game, or karma can effect you buy having the phillies lose 3 more straight games…either way, I try not to say anything bad about opposing teams.

well phillie fans..get used to this, the mets are playing alot more agressive..ask king felix. beltran on third and a wild pitch beltran runs for third and takes out the king. hes out of hte game with an injury. he can barely walk.

Joshua, you talk about karma and then are glad that your Mets injure the opposing pitcher?

philspan, did you copy and paste the exact same comment on both this site and 700level? pretty sure you did. but, i agree with what you have to say

my mets? im a philly fan. im saying if the team is playing with aggression, we have to watch out cause our pitchers could be next…it was a joke

    I saw the slide…Beltran didn’t pull a Crisp.

dan, yeah what’s wrong with that? I posted under the same name at both sites.

Joshua, sorry for the mistake, from your recent posts it appeared to me that you were a mets fan. Even though you were joking, I don’t think that the Phillies are playing less aggressive than the Mets, maybe in the recent homestand but not overall. Remember Bruntlett’s play in the Cardinals series where he barreled over the catcher and Molina had to be taken away on a stretcher to the hospital? I know that the injuries are/were in different situations and places but its baseball, injuries happen regardless of a team being “aggressive” or not. I guess that aggressive isn’t really the right word but if you mean that the Phillies need to play with more heart and play like they really want to win, I totally agree with you. It seems to have been missing the past two weeks.

I know u are probably confused about the phillies pursuing a costly bullpen arm when it is already an area of strength for them. If they truly want to be .500 team they need to take further steps. Continuing to ignore the starting pitching problem by trotting out multiple bums a week is deliciously reminiscent of how I handle wide receivers and defensive ends. I would also suggest that they alienate key players over chump change while their ownership wears gold plated diapers. PS. I heard Lito Sheppard can throw a hell of a curveball. I will trade him to the Phillies for a 4th round pick in 2013. In case you are wondering, I will take a DT with the pick. PPS. I think I could beat Ryan Howard in a foot race on astroturf.

Trade Rumors…. Sabathia and Bedard are definitely on the Phillies list…

Carrasco, Bastardo, Marson, Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth… listed as trade bait.

Funny how Werth is on other teams radars now… He might be more desirable to teams than Victorino. I wonder if teams are still interested in Golson, I thought he would be included in any deal for a big name pitcher.

Why would Werth be more desirable than Victorino other than the fact Werth is a 5 tools player and has a higher ceiling than Vic? He’s not proven and can’t hit righties. Vic has shown what he can do. He’s gonna be a .280 BA speedster his whole career. Werth has a lot of potential, but I doubt he’s going to exceed his expectations.

When they are both playing on the top of their games… both have good range in the outfield… Victorino has a stronger arm. Both can play all 3 OF spots… Werth has much more power at the plate, and if he played everyday could easily project as 25+ HR guy.

Victorino is much faster, but Werth is also a very good baserunner who can steal bases.

You would think Vic has more trade value, but the more you look at it.. Werth would fit nicely into most lineups as a #6 hitter with Power…who helps you defensively… Victorino is either a #2 or a #7 in the lineup… since his speed is his best assest. Lets see what teams ask for.

I thought Werth was going to be our everyday LF next year

Nah, they’ll resign Burrell. Werth is probably a 30 home run a year guy, well maybe just in our ballpark. He has so much potential and such a high ceiling, but it’s unknown what he can truly do. Everyone knows what Vic can do. Werth is more toolsy, but it’s not yet proven to what his full potential can be. People are going to want the proven player, not the high ceiling guy.

phils…make the trade for c.c, oswalt, harden, or bedard…

they need to make a big move not a minors 3rd 4th or 5th rotation starter…they need another ace to match hamels everyteam that wins the ship has to aces @ the top

Tom, some of them have 3.

I’m sayin they need to make a big move… they always make the minor ones that will help bujt not get them over the top any of the above 4 pitchers will move every1 down in the rotation and take out the hopeless eaton

i know you build through the farm but ed wade did the same thing never made that big trade to give us a chance…he held onto gavin floyd forever and nothing produced…WIN now…who knows is any of these prospects can be major leaguye players

Yeah, and look at how awesome Gavin Floyd’s been doing this year. Sure wish we had him in our fucking rotation. We wouldn’t be going over these semantics right now if Gavin Floyd was in our rotation.

If Gavin Floyd was on the Phillies in 2008 he would pitch as well as Brad Lidge would for the Astros in 2008.

Both players needed a change of scenery and weren’t going to get any better where they were.

I think you’re right philspan. Floyd benefited not only being with another team but also from their coaches. In particular the pitching coach who probably corrected some flaws in Floyd’s technique.
