A.S. and A.H.: Bedard Close?

MLBTradeRumors has a post with a bunch of Bedard-Phillies links.
Divulge here. Of those links, there’s a piece about how Bedard was on 950 AM in Philly (which seems weird), and Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus has this:
“Sources say that Pat Gillick’s comfort level with both Lee Pelekoudas and the medical staff he knows from his days in Seattle is making this deal possible, though Gillick seems to want Bedard at a significant discount to what the Mariners paid in the off-season.”
Makes sense. Bedard is getting $7M this season through arbitration with the Mariners. He’ll be worth even more after 2008 and is good through 2010. So what does significant discount mean? I’d say a Carlos Carrasco/Greg Golson/Travis d’Arnaud deal, or something to that extent, would be significant.

Make the trade. This team needs a shakeup. We barely have 4 pitchers as is. There was no talk of a Bedard attitude problem in Baltimore, only when he went to Seattle and the whole team tanked and fell apart. This is the best option left and the Phils are crazy not to do it.

The one thing Im worried about: Pat Gillick is trading top prospects to a team for a guy with question marks (though with great stuff) and hes going to take over that same team with the phillies prospects now on it.
someone already said it but that is DEFINITELY a conflict of interest.
the more i think about it the more ill pull for oswalt because hes right handed and they need another righty starter.

This Gillick-to-Seattle stuff is really just fodder for rumor mongering on WIP and blogs at this point so let’s please not get carried away with the conspiracy theories.
If it ends up being true, then yeah, he’s a dirtbag. I’m not aware, though, of any evidence from his career that he has that kind of reputation.
I’d be disappointed for Carrasco to go without ever finding out how good he might be but Bedard’s got major league talent today and is more of an upgrade than Randy Wolf or Greg Maddux or whatever.

Oswalt or Bedard would be sweet as for the conflict of interest, I dont believe Gillick will do anything that would hurt this team and benefit the M’s.

No way Gillick should be heading up any trade for Bedard – it’s got to be Amaro because of the conflict issues.
Rather than Bedard or Oswalt, I’d like to see the Phils make a play for Harang (better yet, Harang and Freel – the Reds have said they’ll listen to offers) or Greinke, if the Royals are willing to sell. What really irritates me is that we couldn’t get a deal done for Harden, while the Cubs get him AND excellent bullpen help for one plus prospect, one so-so prospect, and two bums.

Aaron Harang is injured.

Harang may or may not be injured – obviously, any deal would need to be contingent on a physical, lest we end up with Freddy Garcia II.
Regardless, Bedard and Oswalt are injured, too, so if we’re talking about them there’s no reason not to consider Harang.

Greinke is a good suggestion, but the Royals seem (wisely) unwilling to part with him.
Tim, I like the Carrasco/Golson/d’Arnaud suggestion. I’d even be willing to throw in a de Fratus or a Roth to replace one of the projectable arms (Tillman, Butler) they gave up to get Bedard in the first place.
And to everyone saying the A’s got ripped off: please, name me the last time Billy Beane got ripped off. I’m surprised he gave up Gaudin as well, but Harden’s health is a BIG concern.

Billy Beane NEVER gets ripped off in this type of deal. Hes made a few bad small minor deals. But he doesnt screw up big deals like this. Chad Gaudin is probably about to tank or something and harden is about to get injrured again. beane knows all.

ricky botallico said that brett myers wants to be traded. and myers had a hilarious denial to it. did anyone see that? it was classic

I’d be all for trading Myers, except if they pull the trigger now, they’d be selling as low as possible. No sense in that…they’d be better served to bring him back as a setup guy and then shop him to teams in search of a closer this off-season.

I concur. but in the hyperdrive world of modern pro sports I think teams will try to get him for their bullpens this year. it is selling but if it helps you get a key piece then go for it.

hes not going to be out closer so there is NO way he wants to stay here.

No team wants him on their team right now because he hasn’t thrown a good pitch in the past month… thats like adding Tom Gordon to your team right now and wanting to use him in pressure situations, late in games.. no team would want Myers right now and plan to use him for this season.
Teams might ask about him because he would be “buy-low” with a high upside… but the phillies would be fools to trade him now and get nothign in return

Ricky Botallico is a moron.. he just cost himself any chance he would ever have of breaking a story with inside information.
He tried to tell everyone that he talked to Myers and Myers said he wanted to be traded… Myers and the Phillies have both since denied it.. and now Bottalico will never get another player to tell him something, ever.

Of course the Phillies and Myers will deny it. Sports teams always lie about stuff like that.
Do you believe anything Andy Reid says at all? hes one of the biggest liars in sports.

besides, theyre supposed to deny it. theyre mad at bottalico because saying that lowers his trade value. denials raise trade value. on the surface at least.

Yeah, I have a feeling Myers did tell Botallico that. It’s either that or Botallico(being a closer) is lying because he thinks Myers wants to be a closer just like himself.

Its a message from myers to the rest of baseball basically to come and get him. he and the phillies can deny it so it looks good.

I don’t doubt that Myers said it… He’s said the same exact thing before, actually all offseason he said it.. But RickyBo is a jackass and now he’s causing drama and I’ll bet that he’s not back next year as their announcer or whatever he’s doing

Billy Beane did get ripped off when he traded Tim Hudson to the Braves for Charles Thomas an Dan Meyer. There’s a reason you haven’t heard of them.
He’s still a very good GM, but every GM makes a bad trade once in awhile.

Oh, Tim Hudson? We’re not getting Tim Hudson.
FYI did you know the Phillies almost traded Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Cole Hamels to Oakland for Barry Zito…Ed Wade said no, thank god. Billy Beane is really a genius.

Speaking of hitters that get on base…there are rumors that Ichiro is going to be made available. Maybe a trade for Bedard and Suzuki could be made. We’ll even give them Taguchi so they can keep a Japanese player. haha

I’m sorry to be a spoilsport to your fantasy baseball wishlist of pitchers for our team. I, like most fans would love to have another “stud” in the rotation. I understand the need to speculate on motives, conspiracies, theories, etc. regarding Myers. That’s all part of the fun here. However, I’m a realist and will use a reality check in this post. We read official statements from Gillick and Manuel that their first order of priority is to have Myers resolve his “mechanics” issue and bring him back into rotation before or immediately after the all Star break. I think that the question of a possible trade for another pitcher will depend on whether or not Myers has a successful comeback and not before. Remember the trade deadline is still three weeks away.

Yeah, you’re right Phil. I remember years ago that the Phillies were thinking of trading Utley and Hamels. I thougth it was for Mulder. But still, that would’ve been a disaster.
The Phillies should trade for Gaving Floyd. Just kidding.
Bedard is a turd, but the Phillies need something, if we can get him without giving up Marson, I’d do it.

Bruce, theyre always going to say that they want Myers to get it right. They just dont say “oh yeah hes done were trading him.” Noone says that. Theyll say we want him to come back and then send someone else to go out on radio and admit that they are actively going after starting pitching. You gotta take a step back and look at the bigger picture. These people act like theyre the CIA trying to mix up other teams and send all kinds of signals. You see it more in football. NFL head coaches actually think theyre some kind of general fighting a war, its absurd.
thats how sports organizations behave. theyre always dispatching people to say all kinds of things.

nyc pimp daddy, you have to be the dumbest person I’ve ever come in contact with. You remind me of the retarded rapper in that one episode of it’s always sunny in philadelphia. You really need to pull a Billy Madison and go back to elementary school, because you have the IQ of a rock. Actually, I’d put my money on the rock to beat you in a spelling bee. I wouldn’t mind trash talking Mets fans trolling a Phillies message board if they at least had a tiny bit of intelligence, but you my friend are a fucking moron. Get a life and get an education. You are worthless and, if I was as dumb as you I’d seriously consider suicide. I know you are full of shit about money and women because you are too dumb to get a job besides working at McDonalds and no matter how attractive you may or may not be a girl doesn’t want a guy as dumb as you. Seriously, shoot yourself in the fucking head, if you aren’t dumb enough to figure out how to turn the safety off.

No Ryan, you’d win. Honestly, I have no problem with trolls. I think they’re funny, and it’s fun to have a rival sports city, but I do have a problem with really dumb people.

Oswalt would be sweet. He’s far more durable than Bedard, and he’s pitched in a bandbox his whole career and succeded. I’d be willing to give up Carrasco and another top prospect (not named Marson) to acquire Oswalt. Marson should be in the bigs NOW, ruiz blows.

Look at the philly fans freak out. You guys need 4 pitchers not one. your shortstop needs to step it up. your first basemen has what 120 k’s. Pretty much bums the rest of the field, aside from utley, who is the only guy on your team worth anything for a trade. So go out and get a mediocre pitcher and throw away your farm that sounds good to me. hope you enjoyed your 3 playoff games for the decade. Lets Go Mets.

Metsos you cna bash someone that has 120 k’s all you want, but he’s doing his job. He’s driving in runs. That’s what he gets paid to do. Rollins does need to step it up, you’re right. Hamels isn’t worth anything for a trade? You’re dumb. Victorino is sought out by so many teams. And JAyson Werth is the most underrated player in baseball. Pat Burrell is having a monster year and is leading all NL outfielders in offensive numbers besides RBI’s. Moyer and Kendrick are having pretty good seasons as well. They’ll dip below a 4.0 ERA when all is said and done. You can’t have 5 pitchers that are aces, no team does, well maybe besides the Angels.
