Today the first half of the 2008 season closes. The Phillies could find themselves in first place in the National League East, but they can also find themselves in second place. Or third place.
It’s maybe the best pitching matchup of the season so far with the Phils Cole Hamels going toe to toe with the Diamondbacks Brandon Webb. The former won’t be at the All-Star Game, so consider this a possible chip-on-shoulder game. Hamels’ 3.18 ERA is actually more impressive than Webb’s. Last time the righty faced the Phillies he threw a complete game, a two-earned run performance in Phoenix.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (9-6) 3.18 ERA
Diamondbacks: Brandon Webb (13-4) 3.27 ERA
Gametime: 1:35 p.m. EST
Weather: 87, mostly sunny
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Coste/Hamels

Your gameday beer: Two of my favorite beer-related things: Sierra Nevada and wheat beer. They come together in this easy-sipping delight, Sierra Nevada Wheat Beer. Finished with French hops, this beer has only a 4.4 percent alcohol content. So you can have a few. Have a couple on this sunny day watching two of baseball’s best slinging their arms for the viewing public. Munch on some cheddar cheese and crackers while drinking.
Go Phillies!

I agree. Clutch hitting by Pat when we needed it the most – loving that 1st place. Mets wouldn’t know what it’s like

Oh, Mets troll (if you’re still here), I guess you guys did know what 1st felt like. Until you all blew the lead (and each other) last year down the stretch. Enjoy 2nd or 3rd!

I’ll close the first half on this wish. I wish, and so dearly, that during the All-Star game, as Billy Wagner lobs BP to the AL in the 8th, that Pat the Bat will be plowing Mrs. Wagner in the boiler room of the Madison Hotel.
Enjoy the festivities, Phils fans.

Now we need the Dodgers to pretend like they’re a big league ball club and beat the Marlins today. Hurdle’s queers can’t find their ass with both hands lately so the Mets will probably win. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn sometimes…

dodges have billingsley pitching who’s very good, and they’re going up against miller who is either lights out or gets rocked. and he’s struggling early. my money’s on LA in that one.

Phils safely in first place at All Star Break. Florida lost — they’re now 1 1/2 back. Hopefully, tomorrow AM, the Mets will be the same!
Way to Go — Pat ‘the Bat”!

Well, I have a lot to say. 1st of all I missed the game, but listened to most of it on the radio. I did catch the 1st 4 innings of the futures game. though, so I’ll start with that.
Marson looked awesome behind the plate. Marson looked good at the plate. I couldn’t gauge Donald. He did throw that ball away, but that was just him trying to show boat in front of scouts. Stupid move, but I’m not going to say he’s bad by that. Carrasco looked filthy. Filthy fastball that had a SHIT LOAD of movement on it. His curve ball and slider were nasty too. I am so fucking excited for them to come play the game in a Phillies uniform. How did Golson do, and how I only saw one at bat by Marson and Donald. Did anyone see if they got any hits?
Geoff, I agree with you almost all of the time on this site, but I really think you need to lay off of Victorino and Moyer. Victorino has been fairly consistent this year. If you want to point fingers point them at Rollins and Utley. I hate to even mention Utley’s name, but recently he has not been stepping up. He had that long 0fer, and he’s gone like 2-30 in with RISP lately. He’s been really streaky. As for Moyer…how can you say anything bad about that guy? He’s pitching amazing, and he’s 45. You’d really take Carrasco, Happ, or Kendrick into the post season over Moyer? He’s got a sub 4.0 ERA. I agree he’s not a 2 or 3 pitcher, but the guy is still solid. The only reason I say he’s not a 3 or 4 is because I don’t know if he can continue this pace, or if he might break down or not. Give the guy a little more credit.
Phils Phan. How can you hate Feliz? Would you rather have Nunez? Nunez was a great 3B, but not as good as Feliz. Nunez also couldn’t hit a watermelon, and yet noone cared because of his D. Feliz is the 3rd best 3B we’ve had in the past 35+ years. He will have 20+ homers 80+ RBI’s. He’ll hit .270. He’s having a good year. Not great, not bad, but good. Give him some credit, especially for his glove.
As for today’s game. I didn’t get to watch it, but I listened in the car. We almost got in an accident because my friend and I were freaking out when Burrell hit his homer. That must have been glorifying. Hamels seemed to be shaky today, but got through it. This will bring me to my final point…Ruiz.
Ruiz is horrible at the plate. He mind as well just not swing with RISP so that there is no way he can GIDP. It’s horrible. At least give the pitcher a chance because the pitcher has a better shot. The thing about Ruiz is that you can’t knock his game calling skills. Hamels was shaky today BECAUSE RUIZ DIDN’T START!!! We have a better record with Ruiz starting than when Coste starts. Ruiz has the lowest ERA for his pitchers than any other catcher in baseball. THAT’S INSANE! We have a mediocre rotation too. Every pitcher that starts for the Phillies have all said the same thing in interviews about Ruiz(other than Moyer), that they love Ruiz behind the plate. They said that he makes them better. The reason I don’t think it matters for Moyer is because something tells me he mostly calls his own game.
We need to do something about a starter during the all-star break. I am sick of this unknowing shit. I want something to happen. If Myers can come back and pitch to his potential and we trade for someone really good, then this pitching staff can be really good.
Hamels
#2
Myers
Moyer
Kendrick
Something needs to be done about Eaton, So, and Jenkins. I don’t care what you trade them for and how much of their salary you have to eat. WERTH IS THE EVERY DAY RIGHT FIELDER!!! What will it take Manuel to realize that? I understand he’s a stroke victim, but how can it make you that dumb?
If these problems can all be address this team should have a monster 2nd half. They’re a 2nd half team. Utley and Rollins need to step it up. Everyone else is doing their job. Victorino, Werth, Feliz, Coste, Dobbs, Moyer, and Kendrick are all having solid years. Hamels, Burrell, and the bullpen are all having great years. Utley and Rollins are streaky and need to be more consistent. If they can play to their potential the 2nd half this team should be ridiculous. Utley will not wint the MVP if he doesn’t play to his potential the 2nd half. Ryan Howard has been ridiculous the past 1 and a 1/2 months. If he can continue his production along with everyone else that is producing well continuing and Utley and Rollins stepping up, this team should have no problem winning the division.
It’s great to be in 1st going into the ASB. They deserve it. They need to spend the week recouping. I kind of wish that Utley and Lidge didn’t go to the ASG. I’d rather them all spend the time resting and practicing. They need that bad. This team should win the division and has potential for more.
GO PHILS!

MOYER IS A 4 or 5. thats my isssue. its wreckless to rely on him as much as they do. they act like hes their 2 or 3 and thats crazy.
however, with the way they set their rotation for the second half you can see hes back to the 4th slot which tells me their looking to install a 2 and a 3. it also tells me that unless myers fixes himself then happ is the 3. the 2 is coming soon, i can sense it. i think it will be burnett and that they are posturing to lower the price on him. doesnt mean its the best move but its what i think theyll do.
this team has potential this season if they remember how to act like a professional again and how to hit properly and if they address the personnel issues. if all of those things are addressed, sure theyll be dangerous. if all those things are addressed….only if…
dude, you cant play ruiz, stop it. i dont care if he “calls a good game”. every single professional catcher should be able to do that. thats no reason to keep him around. he is horrendous at the plate.
something has to be done about him and eaton.
if he was such a good defensive catcher teams would be asking for him in trade discussion but i have NEVER read any rumors about teams wanting carlos ruiz. nobody wants that guy, because he sucks.

id consider being ok with moyer on the team next year if he was a knuckleballer but hes a junkballer. any patient, good, professional hitter rocks him. when they play teams with good lineups he gets rocked.
the ONLY reason he is still pitching is because he is in the weaker, less potent national league. he would not make an american league roster, period.

Your problem isn’t with Moyer, it’s with the front office. He isn’t the #2 or #3 starter, but right now he has to be. He’s pitching GREAT as a #4 but he’s still only a #4.
Mike Piazza couldn’t call a game to save his life, a lot of catchers can’t. Some catchers call better games than other. It’s just the way it is. Coste can’t call a game either. To say any catcher can call a game is wrong. All catchers SHOULD be able to call a great game, but they just can’t. Ruiz needs to step it up behind the plate though. I 100% agree. His offense is just poor. If he can get his BA up to .230 then I’m fine with that. Varitek is hitting around what Ruiz is, and he got an all-star nod because of how awesome he is behind the dish. He has the most career shut outs by any catcher in history. You really can’t say that about a catcher at all.

@ Phil:
That was my point–I hate him because he seems to always hit into a ground out/double play/whatever. But, his statistics show otherwise–he’s really having a decent year. I disagree that he’s the best in 25 years; but, we can debate until we turn blue over whether Rolen was better. Based on Feliz’s numbers, it is clear we could have someone MUCH worse. So, for now, I am simply content. It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to see someone like, e.g., Atkins at the corner.

Oh, of course I’d rather have Atkins, but Feliz is in the top 10 best 3B in the game right now. He’s better off there than a Dobbs/Helms platoon.
