beltran is garbage and the NY fans hate him and you know it. he’s really nothing but a mediocre center fielder.and he’s gettin paid stupid kinda money because he was awesome on the playoffs three years ago or whatever and he’s never came close to being that guy again.

I’m not arguing that Beltran is worse than Victorino. It just doesn’t make sense that you would use that as a stat. Rollins has an MVP and gold glove move that Reyes, hes a higher caliber player right?

Victorino is a better defensive player than Beltran, and that says a lot because Beltran is great. What does Beltran have, more home runs and RBI’s? Vic isn’t a power hitter, and Vic bats in the 2 hole. They aren’t the same kind of player. Beltran bats clean up he’s supposed to have more RBI’s. Victorino will finish with 40-50 stolen bases this year opposed to Beltran’s 25. Victorino will have a better OBP Beltran will have a better slugging %.

Victorino is not as good as Beltran, that is outrageous. Beltran finished 4th in MVP votes 2 years ago. He’s on pace for 25 hr, 116r, 112 rbis, 25 sb and he hasn’t even played very well yet. Victorino is a nice player but Beltran is an allstar player that can carry a team.

Didn’t say Victorino was better than Beltran, but they are equals. Beltran is having a bad year. Victorino is faster and as good if not a better fielder. Vic is hitting for a slightly better average and has stolen way more bags, Beltran hits for more power.

Seriously? He might have had a slow start but he’s a great player and head and shoulders above Pedro Feliz.

Howard has been heating up lately too but has been just as frustrating this season as I assume Delgado has been to Mets fans.

And c’mon, I agree that Pedro is done with but out of respect, you can’t compare a 3 time CY Young winner with a WS ring to a noodling Jaime Moyer.

Victorino is not better than Beltran either.

No… ESPN was just the first place I checked…. and I just went after the predictions they were making before the season started… so yeah, I see your point. From what I’m told, though, Santana is a second half pitcher… and I’ve seen time and time again that big names take varying amounts of time to get used to NY… so I’m not quite counting him out or saying he’s not worth the investment… yet. But there needs to be some vast immprovement (although he needs better run support, too).

And we’ll see… can’t believe we’re passed the halfway point already. Won’t be too long before one of us will be eating crow… Maybe both of us if the Marlins find a way to make us all look silly!

Listen man, I’m not going to insult you personally, it’s just a game, but c’mon… are you really using ESPN as the basis of your argument? If you’ll recall those picks were just weeks after the national media was all caught up in the KING JOHAN SANTANA BEST PITCHER IN BASEBALL nonsense (clearly, the best pitcher in baseball is Josh Beckett) so of course they picked the Mets. If he signed to the Pirates or the Astros they would have picked them to win their division. ESPN was crowning the Phillies as the dominant division winners of the NL East just a few weeks ago and tomorrow morning they’re going to be talking about a slumping Jimmy Rollins. Fairweather, man. I think your problem, possibly your teams’ own problem, is that they believe their own press. 162 games, it’s gonna be fun. The Fightin’ Phils will be there all the way.

MikeW, what you’re saying makes sense if it wasn’t a collapse that left the Phils with the division title. If you can’t see the differeence, we’ll have to agree to disagree. Thanks for not insulting me, though.

Jeff: If that gave the Phils the lead, then it’d be different. It didn’t. The Mets lost and collapsed to other teams… like the Marlins at the end of the season. You can’t have it both ways – the Mets either collapsed or they were beaten. If you call it a collapse, then they SHOULD have taken the division and if they didn’t, the team that did was lucky to be there when the collapse was over. If the Mets were beaten, then it should never have taken a historical event for the Phils to win.

Regarding the player by player comparisons, the only people who’d make those are Phillies fans… and I don’t mean that in any sort of disparriaging way. I’d be behind my guys no matter what, too… so I need to look outside of my own head to find objective information and not say stuff just because I’m emotionally invested.

How many picks did the Phillies get to win the NL East this year? Look at ESPN… 2 picks of the Phils to take the NL East… (granted, there are a lot of boneheads there who picked the Braves… but once you eliminate those, there’s a HEAVY slant toward the Mets). That’s objective. (ANd, yeah… if it was the other way around, I’d probably wanna say these idiot don’t know their elbows from… well… it’d be funny watchign them try to take a crap).

You’re splitting hairs. Do you want me to print out the entire roster and have a side by side analysis of both teams? Edge to the Mets starting pitching. Edge to the Phillies’ bullpen. Edge to the Phillies’ bench. The point is the Mets, on paper and in-real life match up to the Phils. Don’t let the bright lights of the New York and overpaid salaries fool you.

eaton and perez are the same guy: overrated and erratic

bedard or burnett changes that equation but they dont have either yet

i like the phillies bullpen over the mets bullpen. wagner isnt in the same sentence. as lidge right now.

the mets spend money on pitching and the phillies dont. when the phillies decide to do that among other things theyll run away with the division. until then, itll be a struggle.
