After a good series win over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Phils have the first place Arizona Diamonbacks to tangle with before the first half comes to a close. While Pat Burrell won’t be joining Chase Utley and Brad Lidge in the Bronx for the All-Star Game (a shame, but who cares, really?), we can all take solace in the fact his OBP dipped below .400 just twice this season (the second and third games of the year). And we can all congratulate Ryan Howard. His 27 HR and 83 RBI make him the best player not to make an All-Star team. Ever. Yeah, these All-Star Games are a sham.
Those offensive stars will face Doug Davis, who had his longest outing of the season last time out against the light-hitting Padres. Hopefully he’ll go the way of Braden Looper, who barely went six against the Phils yesterday. Kyle Kendrick is the other pitcher on the hill. He has gone six in four of his last five outings.
Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (8-3) 4.39 ERA
Diamondbacks: Doug Davis (3-4) 3.74 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 84, sunny
Lineup: Rollins/Werth/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Feliz/Victorino/Ruiz/Kendrick

Your gamenight beer: Today’s recommendation is one from the Isles. It’s Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery Pale Ale. It’s a decidedly British beer, very detailed and specific in its ingredients. A little bitter, but very fine and easy to take in. It goes well with some curry rice and chicken. Delicious.
Go Phillies!

As were on the build-up here’s an idea for addressing the Burrell situation for your thoughts.
Trade for Matt Holliday while the Rox have him tentatively on the market and let Burrell walk at the end of the year. would be a pricey trade but there would be an immediate replenishing of the prospect pool through draft compensation for loosing Burrell. Makes a lot of sense and wonder if the FO are kicking the tyres on this one…
Good time to be up against the D-Backs, seem to have lost their identity at this point in the year.

Holliday is an amazing player, but I’m not sure we have enough to get a deal done. Even if we gave up Golson, Carrasco and others (excluding Marson, who is clearly untouchable), it still probably wouldn’t be enough. Colorado have him under contract for a while yet (i think) and it would take an amazing offer including major league ready talent to get him, probably including Victorino. I think the best resolution of everyone concerned is for Gillick to just re-sign Burrell, but unfortunatley I just don’t see that happening. MLBTR said that extention talks fizzled immediatley. Imagine a line-up with Holliday AND Burrell though…

Believe Hollidays can walk in 18 months and the chances of the Rox re-signing him are looking very bleak at the moment so like with Teixeria a deal could be done.
I’d love to see Burrell stay in Philly but politics look like someone could nip in and make it worth his while walking. Remeber the 1st round draft compensation if that does happen so if a deal could happen for Holliday the hit on the farm will be only temporary.

Holliday can play RF I’m sure. If our OF was Holliday, Burrell, and Werth and our IF was the way it already is, and MArson was our catcher our offense would be unstoppable. How do you make a line up with that? I’d say this.
Rollins
Utley
Holliday
Howard
Burrell
Werth
Marson
Feliz
Pitcher

Really think a deal could be done here, a deal would involve at least one major prospect but we address the situation in left-field with a guy you can have confidence in a longer term deal. By letting Burrell go there won’t be much change to the number on the payroll or the farm after alls said and done.
Wishful thinking… Come on Phils!

That would be an awesome lineup for sure. I think having Utley in the 2 hole would be the real x-factor, but they haven’t been able to do that yet because there hasn’t been anyone else capable of hitting 3rd.

Holiday wont be here anytime soon cause if his contract is up and he isnt being traded it coninsides with johnny damon contract being up at the same time so i think we would be out spent by the yankees and we should make every attempt bring back pat the bat

I dont even know what youd have to give up for holliday in a trade and in a contract. he wants a HUGE contact

Just imagine the HR numbers Holiday would put up in Citizens Bank though, i’m sure he’d be worth in the investment. Unfortunatley we saw what he could do in the playoffs last year.

the phillies would have to give up werth, carrasco, donald, golson and cardnenes to get him i would think and maybe more.

The X factor here is your compensating for the loss of the prospects by way of compensation for Burrell and who’s looking in-line for somewhere around the 50-60/4 range.

Wouldn’t cost that kind of bounty, somewhere around the Teix deals all the Rox will get and we can afford that.

i think that the phillies could make the move but it would kill what little farm talent we have. contract to holiday would figure to be 110/7-9 and thats way out of the phillies budget.

I would pull the trigger on that trade instantly. Donald is a fringe prospect at a position we have covered for a long time, as is Cardenas. Golson is a toolsy guy who may never pan out, Holliday would replace Werth in the lineup so no real loss there and Carrasco is the only real loss, but with the emergance of Happ and the likes of Savery, Bastardo (and hopefully Drabek and Mathieson when they recover from injury) in the pipe line you can live with that. The best thing to do with blocked prospects is trade them for talent who can help you win now, which is what that move would do. Plus you don’t have to give up Marson.

They would want marson i forgot him in my hypothetical trade cause there stud young catcher of the future JD Closser fell apart and they are now using torralbea so that could replace Carrasco.

I would balk if they wanted Marson, but anything else would be worth giving up. Anyhow, I don’t think there’s any chance of our F.O making a bold as move as this so as much as we’d like it to happen it ain’t gonna.

That money your talking in the Burrell range and taking him up to the age of around 36. it would take 2 major prospects most likely but that’s not going to kill the farm as it would be immediately replenished by the additional draft picks from Burrells move. Not as crazy a move as it sounds…
Kyles looking like he’s a man with a plan tonight.

to be honest while it would be a nice thing it hurts us in other places, farm system gone again, cant prob be signed and its not going to solve the rotation problems.

It’s amazing how many homers Ryan has with the bases empty when his average in that scenario is below the mendoza line (might be over that now)

Its still a bad trade idea cause we couldnt resign him.

He looks really locked in. He’s even going opposite field against lefties ! Victorino popped up horribly with a man on there.

We get a further two first round picks in that scenario adding to the 2 earlier ones with Burrell walking.

We would get 2 first rounders unless a team with a pick in the first 15 signed the player, as was the case with Rowand. However that dosn’t usually happen as those teams tend to have low payrolls and thus don’t spend big on free agents.

Someone said Holliday would drive in a lot of homers in CBP…not as much as in Coors Field. That stadium is more of a homerun park than CBP.

I agree i think he could become a solid number 3 with his good command he has he will always be in games.
