James Happ, welcome back to the show. By the way, you get the Mets again. And you’re opposing Johan Santana.
Good luck!
Seriously though, Happ will have his work cut out for him in his first start (second, career). The Mets have scored 25 runs in their past three games, including 11 against the Cardinals last night. The Phils throw Happ into the fire in the place of Brett Myers, who’s having “fun” in Allentown. Well, great.
It’s the first of a four-game set. A very big four-game set. For us, it means separating ourselves considerably from the Mets and the rest of the NL East. For them, it means getting right back into the thick of things with the All-Star break a week away. Yeah, these’ll be some barnburners. Crazy lineup today.
Happy Fourth of July!
Phillies: James Happ (0-0) 0.00 ERA [Debut]
Mets: Johan Santana (7-7) 3.01 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 80, possible storms
Lineup: Werth/Utley/Rollins/Howard/Burrell/Feliz/Victorino/Coste/Happ

Your gamenight beer: Last time the Phils played the Mets they lost two of three. Before that they lost two of three. I say no more. So for that, here’s Rocky’s Revenge Bourbon Brown. Yes, they say there’s hints of bourbon in this beer. Enough to take those lil’ runts and bash their skulls in. “You’ll eat lightnin’ and crap thunda’!” It’s also the perfect beer for a cookout. Goes well with barbecue. And you know you’ll be having a cookout tonight. So eat some barbecue chicken with this.
Go Phillies!

Don’t worry about this one Happ! It’s just a two time Cy Young winner and a hot hitting team your going up against! Breath through your eyelids!

If Happ can keep it close then I think we can take this one late in the game. Let’s go Pat, Met Killer!

Happ looks good so far. If he can get through 5 or 6 with only giving up 2 runs, we have every shot to win this game. We need to take more pitches off Santana and run his count up!

Just tuned in to see the bases loaded walk. Looks like Happ had a good outing.
Weird for me was seeing the face of Happs Dad. Chad and Happ were born in the same town. I played ball with Happs Dad.
I had not seen him in over 25 years.
Go Phillies!

This home plate ump tonight was atrocious. Happ was dealing and should have gotten at least three obvious strike calls that he did not.

I still get nervous even after all these years. I am just glad to see Philly being consistent in how they are using Chad.
I was in Philly a couple of weeks ago. The stadium is great. Seats for relatives are good seats too.
I remember having to gripe at Detroit, because they would put you way down the left field line.

Hey, a players dad. Hehe, pretty neat. I love what Chad’s done for the club this year. At least you aren’t The Real Deal’s dad.

His name is Joe same as mine. My some of my high school buddies think JD is my kid. Which I correct quickly.
Just like any player, though I hope he gets it together. It is a very unforgiving life, in that if you do not perform and sometimes even when you do, you are gone.
Go Phils

God, what the hell is Chad’s deal? Out of all the guys he faced, he FAILED to strike out one of them. Trade him.

This Blog site is calm compared to the Detroit site. There site was so negative even in Detroit’s good year, that the newspaper stopped it for a while.

I read most of the time, but know enough to not chime in.
Chad says, if he has a bad day, you will chew him up and spit him out. Just like any player. He does not want to hear it if I mention that the fans like the job he is doing. He would just like to do his job.

Go Phillies, I have to run. I will check Baseball tonight later.
I live in Phoenix, where Philly was a blessing a couple of weeks ago.
It is only 185 degrees today. Outside baseball at it’s finest.

Glad to see the Phils manufacture a couple to tie it up. The fact they could do so off a good pitcher, and without the long ball is a good sign for sure. The exciting up and down season even inspired me to reclaim my old sports blog as a college undergrad so I can’t rant more. I was very impressed with Happ tonight and like most of you thought he got hosed on a couple of calls. My biggest gripe is with batting Utley 2nd…such a waste of talent.

This whole game makes me waffle yet again on whether it’s worth trading Vic for a pitcher. Obviously, it depends on the pitcher, but I’m kinda high on the euphoria of a Braves sweep and a win over Santana tonight, which is why I’m thinking things like: “Maybe Happ is the next Hamels and we don’t need another pitcher?”
OK, that moment’s over. (Still, it was nice to dream.)
Great game in every way.

BTW, Tim, if you read this, can your post-game story tomorrow go into some detail on Happ’s performance? I was only able to catch an inning here and there, so I know he pitched well, but I don’t have any details.

nice win. good to see them play good baseball in a close game situation. happ was ok but the only reason he had to be taken out was because of his control. hes gotta improve his control. he has decent stuff and he should be allowed to start again. but the control is gotta get better. chad durbin was excellent tonight. at least they werent all or nothing like usual and they had to work to bring runs in. good stuff.
by the way, tim, i bought a case of that UFO hefeweizen to try it out. that is some QUALITY summertime beer.

happ went 4.2 with 4 walks and 3 k’s and 2 ER. he walked one in two innings in a row, clean until he walked two and loaded the bases and allowed 2 runs to be driven in. chad durbin picked it up and went 2.1 innings clean. great performance by chad durbin.
for happ, they should send him out there again to see what he does knowing that hes been given another shot. if they send him back down it will cause him to need a change of scenery and screw him up in the head.

if they had more than three outfielders who you can even consider bringing up (bohn, golson – injured stil?, watson) right now then you do it in a heartbeat for a pitcher on more than one year contract. i dont know if they can afford it at the moment though because noones really ready to come up and take his place. i think they need to get him out of here anyway though, theyre not oging to pay him big money when its time. hes gone. get value for him while other GMS still think hes good.

Anyone hear the Myers bashing that took place on Baseball tonight last night? For those who didn’t during their ‘Chatter Up’ section they were debating who should start for the NL and AL all-star teams, one of the last e-mails from the viewers was from some guy in NJ, who said that he did not know who should start the game for the NL but how about starting Myers for the HR Derby!!!!! All got a good laugh, but Vina took it further suggesting that Myers could throw for the AAA HR Derby! Pretty funny!
Anyway great win tonight! Go Phils

You know what. I think that Meyers showed some true class accepting a difficult demotion to Triple A. I love the way the Phils pull together and seem to really care about the team as a whole. Meyers may be down right now but getting some work out of the fishbowl could do wonders for him.
Go Phillies!!!

18-17…wtf kind of score is that? haha
As for Myers…if he can actually get back to being the great pitcher he has the potential to be then the Phillies could have a deadly rotation.
