Welcome to the second half of the 2008 baseball season!

The Phillies find themselves opening the second half the way they opened the first: tied for first place. The Mets saddled up next to them with their 10th straight win, a comeback win over the terrible Reds. Now the Phils will wipe the slate clean. It’s 66 games to the finish.

And the Phils open the second half with a new member of the roster. Joe Blanton joins the Phillies, but won’t start for almost a week. Tonight it’s Jamie Moyer back to work. He pitched eight days ago against the Cardinals (seems like a lifetime ago).

The Phils will face Ricky Nolasco, who dominated the Phillies last time out back in Miami. That was the beginning of the Phils quest back to Earth. I’d say it’s high time the Phils start lifting themselves off Earth again.

Moyer is 9-0 against the Fish lifetime (nine-for-nine). The Phillies are 12-4 on Fridays.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (8-6) 3.95 ERA
Marlins: Ricky Nolasco (10-4) 3.70 ERA

Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, partly sunny
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Ruiz/Moyer

Your gamenight beer: For a beer like Cantillon Gueuze 100% Lambic, you have to treat it like a wine. Store it, wait for the right time, enjoy every sip as if it was your last. Sure, tonight you may have a Miller Lite or whatever makes you loony, insane crazy. But for this game, for a Jamie Moyer start, go with the slow stuff. Get the half started right. And eat some pizza with prosciutto and mozzarella. Mmmm.

Go Phillies!

hmmm where are the mets fans on a night where cordero doesn’t implode and hand them a win on a silver platter?

Is anyone else not comfortable enough with only a 2 run lead? That’s not enough. They need to tack on another run or 2 here. It’s the heart of the Marlins order, and they like to hit the long ball.

Maybe im in the vast minority, and he WAS great, ,but it’s time for the Harry K era to end. T-Mac is so much better at this stage.

They’re crying in their mom’s basement, Christopher. “Oh no, we’re not in 1st anymore. We tasted it for 16 hours and now it’s gone.” :’(

I don’t like any of our announcers all that much Matt. T-Mac would be better if he didn’t do those stupid in game interviews. I’m all for Larry Anderson to take over.

Bad base running by Ruiz, he got lucky.

Phil – I think LA is happy with his current color job on the radio. Him and Franskie (sp) really seem to enjoy themselves. I think LA can say more on the radio than he could on TV.

T-Mac is a really solid play by play guy. I agree it’s a shame they stick him out there to do all those interviews – I’m sure that’s not his call.

i was listening to a phils game on the radio earlier this season, around early june maybe, and i believe it was LA who was talking about the homerun jackpot and the contestant’s last name was Cashman, and he said “…and with that last name, you know, shit happens”. *pause* then a quick subject change.

please tell me someone else was listening that night.

Geoff is probably my favorite poster on here when he’s not bashing Moyer.

I’ll take Moyer’s performances this year any day of the week. He may be 86 years old, but that sum bitch can sure throw the ball effectively when needed.

He also is huge in important games. He knew tonight was a must win game. He got it done.

We just gotta pray that his arm doesn’t fall off, and I think we’ll be okay. He’s a nice change of pace from the flamethrowers like Hamels & crew. Keeps batters on their toes.

We don’t really have any flame throwers. Hamels and Kendrick are high 80′s low 90′s. I’m not too sure on Blanton. Myers used to be a flame thrower. He’s low 90′s now. Carrasco is a flame thrower. We’ll see him soon.

Well, that wasn’t exactly my point, but whatever. 90′s is pretty damn fast compared to Moyer, and that was my point.

Good win for the Phillies. Solid pitching will always win. These are the kind of games the Phillies need to win. Can’t win when you give up 6+ runs. Anyway where is metsfan tonight after we lost? After all that shit talking after last nights Mets game. Oh well 10 game winning streak gone. Tomorrow maybe start another good winning streak.

Geoff is good… when he makes sense… I OFTEN have to question his flipping out and calling for the “blow this team up” kinda stuff.. but he knows his stuff, knows that it takes a solid farm system and a young core to win… look at the Yankees as the prime reason why you can’t just outspend teams and expect to win.

Glad to see us in 1st alone again tonight.. hope we can keep it going!

I always say on this board that Moyer is our guy to give the ball to to get the job done. He’s HUGE in big situations. He continues to baffle me at the age of 45. All of this talk about his arm falling off is so annoying. He throws the ball 80 mph and he knows his body. He would never do anything to put this team in jeopardy.

Moyer’s arm/health will be fine. Guys who throw 78 mph fast balls can do it forever. And once again, he proves that grit and experience still have something to teach the youngins.

On a side note, I’m pretty sure I heard on 610 just a bit ago that Myers got shelled tonight. I don’t remember the exact stats and I swear I head ‘em say he pitched for Clearwater (which makes no sense?). Can anybody clear this up?

Clearwater lost 3-2 last night in a 7 inning game. Brett Myers was the starting pitcher.

Myers pitched 6 2/3 innings (he gave up the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs), 7 hits, 3 runs 2 of which were earned, 1 walk, 6 K’s.

Not a dominating outing, but I wouldn’t say he got shelled. He’s about as ready as he’s going to be this year.

If Myers can put up the numbers in the bigs that he’s been putting up in AAA then I’ll be happy with that.

This from Ken Roesenthal, through mlbtraderumors.com

“The Phillies were recently working on a blockbuster with Colorado that would have netted them Brian Fuentes and Matt Holliday for something like Shane Victorino, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson. Those talks have stalled, and the added payroll might’ve been a problem for the Phillies anyway.”

Its an interesting move, but there goes the farm system. What do you guys think?

This is old news Wilson. I’d do it if you take out Fuentes Marson and Carrasco and add Bastrado, Donald, and another lesser prospect.

Wilson – As good as Holliday is, I wouldn’t do that deal. Colorado isn’t one of these small market teams, I can’t see why they’d give away Holliday at this time. They should be looking to build around him, not trade him. I think this is just a wild rumor that someone’s dreamed up.

Also, a good hitting catcher is always superior to a power hitting corner outfielder.

Matt, the Rox are a small market team. His contract is up next year. His value is much higher now than it would be in the winter.

Holliday would make your offense the best in the national league! If they get him you would not have to worry as much about picking up another starter!

We don’t need another starter. There was noone worth getting that’s a #2 type. Holliday would make our offense the best in baseball.

True. How about Burnett? He is a #2/3 starter. Whats up with myers? Is he coming back?

Are the Philies trying to make a move for Holliday? Who would they have to give up?

Gillick is trying to stay away from guys that break down. I don’t disagree with him on that one. Burnett is always broken down. He’s also streaky, just like Myers. Myers is coming back next week against the Mets. If he can come back and pitch to his potential he is our #2 guy. As for Holliday, yes a trade is in the works centering around Victorino and prospects. As long as Marson isn’t given up I’d say pull the trigger. Werth can play CF and imo is better than Victorino.

I would not give up Marson either. And if Myers can come back and stay healthy then the rotation should be good with Blanton. Blanton pitches a lot of innings so that will help your bullpen from getting over used.

Yeah, Blanton is a good #3. He eats innings. He gives up runs, but he’ll get support. He’s better than a 4.96 ERA. I’m not in anyways concerned about the back end of our rotation. Moyer/Kendrick is incredible for our #4 and #5 guys. Our whole season may rely on Myers.

I know Livan Hernandez is not an ace but he would be a great #4/5 starter. He eats innings also and with blanton & hernandez that would save a lot of innings with the bullpen and the Phillies strenght is the bullpen! And that would help the bullpen to stay strong fininshing up the year. Livan Hernandez has a 9-6 record. His era is 5.44 but in the American League on the Twins. Bring him on a contending team and he can be better.

Nah, Moyer and Kendrick are fine.

What are the Phillies lacking that is a concern going into the 2nd half of the season?

A bat that can get on base and hit in the clutch. ie Holliday.

Ibanez from seattle is on the block. He would help. They are really looking to move him.

The pirates would look to trade nady and bay but would they trade with philly?

Yeah, they’d trade with Philly. It’s not like hockey where we’re division rivals. I wish Pittsburgh was back in our division though. For starters it would be nice to beat up on them like the Cubs get to, and they’re inner state rivals in other sports. Even the Steelers and the Eagles don’t like eachother. I’d rather have Giles, DeJesus, or Holliday over Nady, Bay, or Ibanez. I either want a guy that can get on base a lot for our big boys. Holliday is a bit different. He’s one of the top 10 best hitters in baseball. He will be on base a lot for Howard and Burrell and he’ll also drive in Utley and Rollins. Let’s face it, if we got Holliday Utley will move to the 2 hole.

Is Atkins on the block? He would be a get pick up and that would be a scary lineup. And 3rd base is a position you can upgrade. With Jenkins and Worth platooning in RF then 3B is the only other position you can upgrade for that type of player.

Eh, Feliz is fine. His glove is incredible, and he’s hitting .270 with 12 homers and 45ish RBI’s. We need to upgrade in the outfield. Werth should play everyday over Victorino and Jenkins. If we got Holliday the OF of Werth, Holliday, and Burrell would be ridiculous. That’s a 100+ home run outfield with a .300+ BA and 200+ RBI’s written all over it.

Yes, but he is a player you are going to have to give up a lot for! Is it worth giving up he farm system for? Even your top pitching prospects.
