After a miraculous win in game one, the Phillies look to take the three-game set with the Mets tonight.
Welcome Back, Brett: Brett Myers returns to the Phillies rotation after being sent down to the Minor Leagues July 1. He had four starts down there, and each was good, but not great. We’ll see how the fastball is doing when he faces David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and the like.
Not The Maine Man: John Maine is scheduled for the Mets, and he’s been atrocious lately. He has given up 14 runs in his last four starts, never once getting out of the sixth inning. One of those starts was against the Phillies, and though he gave up one hit, it was a three-run home run from Ryan Howard.
Collpase Continued: The Mets should have a skip in their step to avoid another monumental collapse like they had last night. What the Phillies must do: Hit early and hit hard.
First Place: It’s kind of on the line tonight.
Phillies: Brett Myers (3-9) 5.84 ERA
Mets: John Maine (8-7) 4.22 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 80, cloudy
TV: ESPN
Lineup:

Your gameday beer: Since Brett Myers is back tonight, and we want to give him the benefit of the doubt, here is Pranqster, in his honor. It’s a tasty Belgian-style Strong Pale Ale. Eat some linguini with shrimp tonight. I just hope the Pranqster himself can go seven and give up as little as humanly possible.
Go Phillies!

If Leo Mazzone and Mother Teresa had a child (theoretically), could this child cure Brett Myers?
It really makes you think.

Nady is a good player. He can also play 1st when they rest Howard. That would be a good pick up. A trade the mets should of made.

TJ: I was mostly joking, based on the “unrealistic trades for Myers” and “Dodgers looking for a closer” comments. The Phillies have actually asked the Dodgers about Kemp, but I don’t know why they would trade a young outfielder like him. I also don’t know why the Phillies would really need him since he is basically a younger Jayson Werth, although he still has plenty of time to improve.

i think they REALLY need nady. look at his batting average. he barely strikes out. they definitely need to bring him in. its the most realistic outfield option that has good value i feel.
metsfan, i cant recall, didnt the mets have nady and trade him away?

Geoff: The Mets traded Nady in the 06 season for Oliver Perez.

Yes, they were stupid and traded him to pittsburg. That’s the Mets for you.

I would trade myers for ANYTHING. We need to come to terms with this being a salary dump. He would never be traded to a team like the pirates as their basic agenda is to dump salary for prospects not vice versa

Geoff / Philsphan – I know I was jokingly being a dick because danny got all offended when I shot down his Halladay for Howard trade. But honestly I don’t think Myers will be traded nor do I think that we make anymore moves this season. Gillick is a very subtle guy and Blanton was his fix, hopefully it works out and in time both him and Myers work out the kinks.

metsfan: There have been worse trades, even by the Mets. Could you imagine if the Mets had Kazmir and Santana in their rotation? That would have been insane.

Tidbit, If Greg Dobbs gets another pinch hit, he will own the record for most pinch hits by a Phillie (20)

yes there are some dumb mets fans on here but lots of dumb phillies fans too on their blogs. Generally, those doing most of the trash talking are the morons, those trying to seriously talk baseball are not.
And didn’t the city hand over our public schools to a private company b/c we were failing so badly?

The education cracks are lame and baseless… I can’t find a single list that ranks Philly in the top 25 yet NY consistently is hovering around 20th in most educated cities.

I’m a NYer, Mets fan but don’t trash talk here. Especially since these two team match up so well and make every game interesting. I just like seeing the Phils fans opinions/predictions on their crew. The Phillies are an extremely tough club that play all 27 outs extremely hard.

i strongly disagree with the steve jeltz award going to myers. i would give it to charlie manuel for pulling myers in the 5th inning for madson in the 6th. that was a no brainer in the sense that the person who made the decision obviously has no brain. why pull him there? myers had his easiest inning in the 5th retiring them in order without any problem. he was settling down nicely and clearly could have pitched one more inning. then of course madson comes in and gives up the big 3 run homer to all but end the game.

I agree the jeltz award should have gone to madson. I’m not saying that Myers pitched well, but I was actually expecting worse. If Howard made that play in the 1st one run would not have scored and if his command was just a little better or the Mets were a little more free swinging that would have taken away another run. Madson really blew the game and I still think he shouldn’t have been brought in that early in the game, bring in Condrey instead. Also the Phillies offense was worse than Myers, they could only score 3 runs off a mediocre Maine and Mets bullpen?!

btw: this shit i’m reading here is the best comedy i’ve ever seen. Jose Reyes , a hall of famer? what the fuck are you smoking? are you dipping into Bobby Brown’s stash? Jose Reyes is nothing more than a slighly above average punk kid with million dollar potential and a ten cent head. Brett Myers has a better shot at the hall than Jose Reyes. hell, Jose Reyes barely gives Yunel Escobar a run as the fourth best SS in the division.

a ranking from best player to worst player of NL East Shortstops.
1. Hanley Ramirez
2. Jimmy Rollins
3. Christian Guzman
4. Jose Reyes
5. Yunel Escobar
if Reyes could ever pull his head out of his ass he might be able to become a great player. but until then, he’s nothing but maybe slightly above average. and i can’t wait til he gets beaned by a phillies pitcher for that bullshit he pulled tonight after that homerun. you know its coming. its baseball justice

Bean him for celebrating a big go ahead home run in his home park that’s rational. Are the phillies really that immature of team that just because they have been on the losing end of these series all year they have to come in throwing at every Met that comes to the plate? I didn’t hear anyone crying on Tuesday night when Victerini scored in the ninth clapped his hand and pointed into the Mets dug out. You guys want to throw inside like little bitch’s when you lose that’s cool but remember Perez is going tomarrow he throws hard and has been known to be bit wild at times.

We need to trade Myer before the trade deadline…He wants to be a Closer and a change of scenery might do him better, his days need to be over here…I think we could get a nice lefty relief pitcher for him and a prospect.

for the people talking about getting nady… there are lots of teams interested in him. the pirates will be looking for at least two very good prospects. MAYBE they could get him for a combo like golson and happ, but even then i’m not sure. more likely than not they’d have to give up either carrasco or marson.
rough loss, that was maybe the worst pitch i’ve ever seen madson make. but, i didn’t expect a sweep this series, i expected them to take 2 of 3. with moyer on the mound tomorrow i like their chances to take the series.

yeah reyes is no hall of famer, but he has the right to showboat after shane victorino was showboating on second base, who cares

the mets were forced to trade nady because duaner sanchez was out for 2 seasons after a car accidet, they were desperate for pitching

lezgomets – Victorino wasn’t showboating at second.. he was waving his arms to the ump to signal he was safe. That is absolutely not showboating, all that bullshit Reyes does is showboating. Seriously, that kid celebrates for 5 minutes after a homerun.

It really doesn’t matter who showboats. Every team has players that are going to showboat. The only thing that matters is its been a good couple of games and looking for a good one today. These two teams really go at it and its always exciting!

Rosenthal and others were saying Myers needs a change of scenery and an offseason trade would be possible. they need to get on that now. the phillies probably fed that to him to gauge leage reaction to his availability before makeing him available.
i think nady will be the easiest guy to get out of the top 3 outfielders. you could even get them to take myers if you paid part of his salary because they could sell it to their fans, who alreayd dont go to the games anyway, as some kind of good move. you give them myers and jason donald so the pirates can afford to move jack wilson and have donald come up next year.

Geoff, that trade proposal DOES make sense, but oyu’d have to eat at least half of Myers salary. If you’re going to trade Myers you have to make it a salary dump.

Do the Pirates have any untrest at all in Myers? Why would they want him with the way he is pitching and still have to pay part of his large salary? I think the Pirates would trade Nady for just prospects.
