The Phillies open a huge three-game series in Queens tonight against the Mets.

Blanton Debut: Tonight is the debut of Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton, who went 5-12 for the Athletics this season. He was acquired in a trade for Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman and Matt Spencer.

Johan: Mets ace Johan Santana makes his third start against the Phils this season. Against them he is 1-0 and has pitched strongly both times. Last time out he was pulled after seven innings, and the Mets promptly lost the game.

O Bother: Sunday the Phillies were shut down by Marlins pitching after the opening innings. They lost 3-2.

First Place: It’s on the line tonight.

Phillies: Joe Blanton (5-12) 4.96 ERA
Mets: Johan Santana (8-7) 3.10 ERA

Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, mostly cloudy
Lineup:

MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday

Your gameday beer: In honor of Blanton’s debut, I’m going with something heavy. A stout. The old traditional Irish dry stout, Guinness. Good with hearty meals such as beef stew, it’s a slow drinker that adds a couple pounds to you when finished. You feel very Blantonesque when you’re done. Go get ‘em, Joe.

Go Phillies!

    Trade talk:

Ed Wade just acquired his old “ace,” Randy Wolf for a couple minor leaguers. I don’t know why.

Jon Rauch went from Washington to Arizona for Emilio Bonaficio. That’s it? Rauch isn’t bad at all.

Buster Olney reports Phils are looking at Arthur Rhodes. Uhhh that’s not what I had in mind when I said they needed reinforcements.

Tonight is the 1st game of the season. Go Phils! If they don’t start winning now then it’s over.

We need two out of three. I can’t wait for this. By the way, the game day beer is very appropriate.

Love the blog, but wanted to shed some light on the Guinness myth:

    From http://www.briansbelly.com/beerbelly/guinness.shtml

Guinness is often thought of as a high calorie beer but the official word from Guinness is that it is less than 11 calories per ounce. A 12oz serving has 125 calories, 9.8 grams of carbs and it’s alcoholic content is 4.2%. For comparison, 12 ounces of Budweiser is 150 calories and 11 grams carbs, 12 ounces of Heineken is 150 calories and 12.2 grams of carbs, 12 ounces of Corona Extra is 148 calories and 14.1 grams of carbs, and SURPRISE… a Sam Adams Light has 126 calories and 10.9 grams of carbs. Of course, I don’t know anyone who only drinks 12 ounces of Guinness (or any beer for that matter) so your mileage will vary.

Otherwise, keep up the good work!

I am pumped to watch this game tonight. Blanton I think will partially solve the break down of the bullpen as he is an innings beast and will put up better numbers than Ace Eaton. I like the fact that the Phillies jumped on Santana early.

BTW, the adjusted line up today looks pretty nice. Burrell batting 3rd and Victorino at the 7th position feels a lot more well rounded to me. So when Vic starts hitting, he’s getting on at the bottom of that line-up, hopefully getting Jimmy more chances to drive some runs in and waking him up from his current funk.

The only reason I hated leaving Philly to move to Charlotte is games like tonight where I could be sluggin some beers watching the game. Instead I have to follow it on shitty gameday…damn.

Sammy please explain why your on here cheering on the Mets? Please at least reassure us you have a brain by saying your on a Mets forum as well. Have you actually got anything to contribute here, maybe why you think your Mets are better than the Phils? (If you need that question simplified into the official Mets language I’m sure we can find a translation for you)

There will be no positive comments about Endy on this board again. If you can’t see that every single one of his hits are infield singles and bloopers you are blind. he is a AA player.

Delgado struck out and the ump ruled he didn’t swing. One of the worst calls on that type of play that ive ever seen. His wrists completely broke.

Grrrumpy Miner I do encourage fans of other teams coming on here if they want to talk baseball, thats great. The unfortunate thing is the majority of Mets fans that come on here just want to make moronic empty statements instead of having a debate.

What the hell happened with Charlie there?

Why so upset with the team? Lets get this straight. The Phillies are an above average team but they are not the Mets! The only reason the Phillies made the playoffs last year is because the Mets got cocky because they were the BEST team and they got tired of beating everbody up and took it easy. The Phillies took advantage of that and were able to win the division. That was the only reason why the Phillies won the division. The Mets came in the season with that on their mind and sucked it up the first half while the MARLINS and Phillies were fighting for first. Know since the Mets seem to finally be getting over that they are going to prove why they are the BEST team in the National league!

As for as for the other post saying that the Mets do not have real talent lets get this straight. Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Church & Santana are just as talented then any other players on the Phillies. Were are the Phillies talent? Utley and maybe Hamels are the only real talent your team has. Howard can hit 70 hr’s but SO 200 times. Howard can’t play defense and and is going to hit around .260 which is not a lot of talent.
Burrell who had a great first half is not going to keep that up. You might get a little more from him because he is in his walk year. Victorino is an average offensive player and he is no rowland. And Werth is a platoon player at best and is not a difference maker! And finally, Rollins had his best year last year ever and he will never do that again! The starting pitching besides Hamels is horrific and lets hope that bullpen does not wake up to reality to see who they really are.

So, before you start thinking about the playoffs and post season just remember what team you will be looking up at the rest of the season!
    The METS!!!!

One thing about managers named Manuel……both Jerry and Charlie are fiery and animated and fight hard for their teams……however, you piss off the wrong ump and you are as good as gone.

Sammy you make a couple of good points about the Phils but come down off your pedostal, your Mets are not that good and ‘got tired of beating everyone’ is the kind of statement a moron makes.
