The Phillies open a huge three-game series in Queens tonight against the Mets.
Blanton Debut: Tonight is the debut of Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton, who went 5-12 for the Athletics this season. He was acquired in a trade for Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman and Matt Spencer.
Johan: Mets ace Johan Santana makes his third start against the Phils this season. Against them he is 1-0 and has pitched strongly both times. Last time out he was pulled after seven innings, and the Mets promptly lost the game.
O Bother: Sunday the Phillies were shut down by Marlins pitching after the opening innings. They lost 3-2.
First Place: It’s on the line tonight.
Phillies: Joe Blanton (5-12) 4.96 ERA
Mets: Johan Santana (8-7) 3.10 ERA
Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, mostly cloudy
Lineup:

MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday
Your gameday beer: In honor of Blanton’s debut, I’m going with something heavy. A stout. The old traditional Irish dry stout, Guinness. Good with hearty meals such as beef stew, it’s a slow drinker that adds a couple pounds to you when finished. You feel very Blantonesque when you’re done. Go get ‘em, Joe.
Go Phillies!

I am surprised no one is complaining about the trade for Blanton. Are you happy for giving up the prospects you did for this average starter? And why did they not go after Sabathia or Harden? They gave up to much to get Blanton. Blanton had an era over 5.00 in the american league. What will it be in the National league?

I swear that Victorino looks like a high school baseball player in his Phillies uniform. He’s such a small guy.

Philliesuck, alot of Phils fans think we gave up to much to get Blanton. But our farm system ultimatly wasn’t deep enough to get Sabathia or Harden. Blimey, the bases are loaded

marlins 1-hit the braves to win tonight. if the mets hang on, that means the phillies are tied for 2nd, and perhaps destined for 3rd with myers pitching tomorrow. not a good time to be a phillies fan.
I couldn’t agree more.

It is funny how mets fans only go on Phillies’ boards. Evidently no one is intelligent enough in North Jersey or New York to create a Mets board?

I’m okay with Blanton. Dude, I just couldn’t deal with seeing Eaton pitch again. I think Myers gets another shot before it’s officially Happ time.

yeah happ time is coming soon. im ok with blanton as a 3 or a 4 on this team next year. they need to go out and make a big splash though for a real number 2 in free agency like they shouldve done before. thats so obvious, they HAVE to do it.

Is Taguchi really the answer in this situation?

I think the Indians wanted Carrasco, out top prospect. I’d have pulled the trigger, but i’d rather we make a trade for Holliday than Sabathia with our few prospects

you dont need a home run. thats whats wrong with the offense in the first place. just get a base hit and tie the game. its easier that way

that was an excellent AB. Fouled off what he couldn’t hit and then got his pitch and went with it.
