Marlins Trade For Rhodes

The Marlins acquired Arthur Rhodes today from the Mariners for pitching prospect Gabby Hernandez.
Rhodes has a 2.86 ERA this season, missing last year to Tommy John. He pitched for the Phillies in 2006 and had an ERA over 5.00.
That puts the Phillies watch list down one man in the left-handed reliever category, and I’m not losing sleep over this one.

Yea, not too upset about this one. Can’t wait to see Utley bomb one off him in a big spot.

Do not want.

Happy this happened, Rhodes first go around here was just terrible. And he isnt getting any younger. Let the marlins get him so we can hit him around a little.
Although we deffinetly do need another lefty in the pen to give JC some help.

my favorite Arthur Rhodes quote on the late Cory Lidle: “all he wants to do is fly his plane and eat ice cream”

Haha, yea that was the gist of it. I know he said all he wants to do is fly his airplane and gamble. And that after his starts he would sit in the club house and eat ice cream. I’d want Rhodes back if he was full of those little gems.

The Marlins manage to make their already horrible pitching staff a BIT worse. Nice

Horrible pitching staff, Rob? I’d say Nolasco, Johnson, Olsen, and Anibal Sanchez are as good as any team in the NL East. Rhodes will be used to get lefties out and will fall in line after Pinto. It’s not like adding Huston Street to the bullpen, but the Marlins have a lot more talent than people are willing to give them credit for.

If they’re so close, Arthur Rhodes certainly does not put them over the hump. Maybe they’d play better with their staff in the NL West, but not in this division.

Golson did not start today in CF for Reading, a trade perhaps?

I think if you put those Marlins pitchers on other teams, they are all #3, #4 type guys.. Olsen sucks.. Nolasco is good, ive got him on fantasy so ive been watching him whenever I can.
Johnson looked good two weeks ago, and Sanchez needs to stay healthy… is Andrew Miller still in their rotation?
They made out like bandits in the Cabrera/Willis to the tigers trade… Maybin is going to be a stud and Andrew Miller is supposed to be very good too

Yea he’s gotta be involved in trade talks…. Golson, Donald, and ?? to KC for Mahay and Guillen is my best guess

andrew miller is some sort of raw doppleganger of cole hamels except not as good. its a strange thing.
guilles: .259 14 hr 71 rbi
eh, you kow what? im ok with that, hell help because there are no .300 hitters realistically left anymore.
mahay/guillen is a decent get. i will admit that i was out of line there.
golson and donald clearly will be in the deal. ill bet two more prospects are also involved.

you’d improve this year, and hold onto Carrasco and Marson.. I wonder if you would need to give them Bastardo or something as well?

Don – I’m not sure that Olsen “sucks,” but on the Fish he only needs to be a #4 behind Nolasco, Johnson, and Sanchez. That means he matches up against Myers or Kendrick for the Phils and Pelfrey for the Mets, and I don’t really see that much of a difference. Talk all you want about Myers’ potential or Kendrick getting better run support, the bottom line is Olsen’s numbers compare with both of their’s, so if Olsen sucks the Phils better take a long hard look in the mirror.

Seems like more than enough for a reliever and an outfielder…
I don’t know much about guillen other than his stats show he drive in runs, and doesn’t walk much..
fielding percentage of only .961 in RF though… FP% of 1.000 in leftfield, and it looks like he splits time in both spots.. 37 games in LF, 39 in RF… 8 outfield assists, 3 errors

Jose Guillen is the worst clubhouse cancer in baseball. Look him up on wikipedia and see how many in-house fights he creates. He’s a loser and should be avoided at all costs if you wish to make the playoffs.

Olsen carreer numbers… 29-32, 4.64 ERA, 1.47 WHIP
This year he’s 6-6, 4.04 ERA, 1.32 WHIP
Adam Eaton’s career numbers… 68-63, 4.80 ERA, 1.42 WHIP
Brett Myers career… 63-56, 4.46 ERA, 1.37 WHIP
Kyle Kendrick career… 18-9, 4.27 ERA, 1.39 WHIP
I would say his numbers most closely resmble Adam Eaton..

why are you bothering with career numbers? moyer’s ERA this year is 3.79, but his career ERA is 4.20. which number means more to you? this year’s. so go by this year’s numbers. and this year’s numbers tell you that olsen is pitching better than a #4, and is pitching better than any of the phillies choices for #4.

I’d rather have Moyer and Myers over Olsen… Im not sold on Kendrick the way everyone else is, because he can look outstanding one start, and blowup the next.
Adam Eaton is going to dominate!!!
..
…
… when the move him up to A- Clearwater, from the low-A Lakewood team..

Don, the point is Olsen does not “suck,” and that it’s entirely irresponsible to write off the Marlins just because they have a bunch of guys you’ve never heard of or have never lived up to expectations before. This year they’re all putting it together at the right time, and with Johnson and Sanchez back in the fold they become even more dangerous. Please don’t overlook them.

Jesus Christ Sherman… I’m just saying I don’t think they are as good as the Phillies or the Muts
Besides Hanley Ramirez.. and MAYBE Mike Jacobs, they don’t have true-playas that scare me

The Marlins have 4 #2′s in their rotation. That’s pretty solid. I’d take the 4 #2′s over the Phillies #1 and 4 #4′s(even if one of those #4s is pitching like a #2 and the other #4 has the potential to be a #2.)

Mets Interested In Luis Ayala
By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 1:12pm CST]
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mets are discussing reliever Luis Ayala with the Nationals. Omar Minaya “badly wants a reliever.”
The 30 year-old carries a 5.54 ERA in 50.1 innings, though he’s pitched better than that.
hahahaha what a joke.

I’d like to see them get Mahay. Donald would be expendable because he’s blocked by J-Roll, and I could live without Golson as long as we make an effort (a serious one) to resign Burrell. We’re going to be in a shit-heap without him next year. Who’s going to carry LF everyday? Jenkins? We’d have to give up Donald and probably one or two more prospects. I’m not sold on Guillen.

Uggla owned the Mets the other night. They’ve got a great, young team. They Mets and Phillies might be better on paper but the Marlins have been more consistent than both teams all year.
