Myers’ Happy-Go-Lucky Jaunt In Allentown

Brett Myers pitched his first “rehab” start for AAA Lehigh Valley yesterday. The line: 5 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 K.
The start is getting mixed reviews. Throwing 60 strikes in 100 pitches? And 100 pitches in five innings? He needs to do better than that, especially against AAA competition.
After the game, Myers said he had “fun” in Allentown:
“Being here was relaxed. I am trying to get that swagger back that I used to have. I am trying to get cocky again. I feel better.”
I hope so. Shake off all the crap and get to pitching.
Mike Arbuckle, Phils director of scouting, said the outing was unspectacular, but necessary:
“It was not outstanding but it was solid. In the fifth inning he hung a few curveballs. He has to continue to get command of his fastball and consistency with his delivery. He had to take a step back and work on some things, and he accomplished that.”
This is the time for Myers to reclaim the fastball. When that’s working the curve will do its own work. Next time I want to see Myers throw 75 fastballs out of 100 pitches, no matter how poor the outcome.
Related: By the way, I have to recommend everyone to read Jim Salisbury’s fantastic timeline of the Myers-to-Allentown saga. It’s a worthy piece on how the team and Myers camp operated. A little perturbed about Myers, at least as he’s portrayed by Salisbury.

Not impressed, but it was necessary like stated. I’m already liking this uprise in his attitude, whether its for show or not in concerning but if its sincere I like it. If he’s down there for too long then he’ll get discouraged and lose everything he’s gained in the expierience. Two more starts, if no significant improvement is made, something has to be done.

Yea, not very impressed with his overall line. I very highly doubt we’re going to see significant improvement within 2 more start. I think Brett is way too concerned with his image and how people view him. Like he said, he wants to be a cocky pitcher with a lot of swagger. He wants that rock star status. Whatever he needs to do to pitch better I’m all for it, but I think he needs to focus less on being such a badass on the mound and just pitch. I don’t think he realizes that you have to pitch well first, and the cockiness/swagger will follow. It’s not the other way around usually, especially when your given up bombs 3 times an inning.

I’m not worried about performance – I’m sure there were times when he was told to throw his cutter on the outside corner five pitches in a row – but I am worried that Myers seems to think of this as fun.
Myers is an aggressive guy and he has a lot of pride – for him to be shirking away from that instead of confronting his anger head on is troubling.

FIREWORKS…
anyone know where to get legit fireworks, like the ones you drop in the tube and they shoot like 100-150 feet in the air?
I went to one of the TNT-tents and they sell like glorified sparklers… I know some of the places used to sell them to out-of state residents (and my buddy with the NJ liscense sure came in handy) But I think all those places closed.
Anyone? Anyone??

James, I agree. I should’ve remarked about the ‘fun’ comment. He’s there to get back in business, get to work, fix himself, not have fun with a bunch of AAA retreads. I like that he “feels better,” but that means nothing if he doesn’t deliver.

anybody think that eaton was asked to go last year and rejected the offer? he had a worse era… i didnt portray myers in a bad way there.. in fact the article made it seem to me like he looked professional. anybody would ask the question he did and most players wouldnt have done that

Eaton may not have been asked. They were struggling to find people to fill the rotation last year. If he was asked then he did decline obviously, but he probably wasn’t asked. Eaton also wasn’t look at as the guy that was going to help us win the division, like Myers is now. Myers is our “ace” so he needs to figure shit out or we’re in trouble, or at least that’s how the front office is seeing things.

Yeah. We are definitely trading for someone. Not sure who it will be though. I think itll just be a 3rd guy.

Jesus H., the guy isn’t a politician, he’s a ballplayer. I’d say “fun” relates to throwing again with some of the pressure off, and he probably doesn’t use big words like “confidence”. Must be all the video games.
