Obviously, with low expectations for Myers, fans were ready to jump
on the much maligned pitcher at the slightest moment of trouble in
last night’s game. I like to offer a perspective that likely differs
with other fans. Sure, his command was not good (5 walks). However,
as the Phil’s manager stated… “I felt like his stuff was good,”
Charlie Manuel said, referring to Myers. “I think he was amped. He
definitely wanted to do good. He didn’t want to come out of the game.
He had some fight to him. â€¦ I think right now we need more looks at
him.” I personally felt that Myers was too pumped up and tried too
hard as he overthrew his fastball out of the strike zone in the first
inning. If you take away that inning (4 consecutive walks) and look
at the last 4 innings you would find some positives. His stats for
the last 4 innings reads… 1 run, 3 hits, 1 BB, 2 KK’s AND 0 Hr.
Compare that to “Average Joe” Blanton’s outing (vs Mets) where he was
hit hard and often for 6 innings…5 runs, 8 hits, 3 BB, 1 KK AND TWO
HRs (including 2-run HR by Castro in his last inning pitched). Yet I
read several comments by the same “fans” who “hates” Myers on other
blogs that they thought Blanton did OK. A good example of hypocrisy.

As a reminder to those who are so concerned about Myers’ velocity on
his fastball, he is NOT a “power” pitcher but rather, he relies on
finesse by using his fastball to set up his “out” pitch, curve/slider.

Obviously, his problem is in his approach, command and pitch selection.
So as Cholly stated, Myers deserves another chance to resolve those problems.

Nady really isn’t that good. I live in pittsburgh and he’s clearly not the best player on a very bad team. Nobody here would miss him, and I think we’d eventually miss Vic.

my point is if you’re going to trade the future (Marson-next year’s starting catcher and Carrasco-a member of your 2009 rotation) then do it for something more than a moderate improvement. Don’t just trade your future for a Marte, a Sherill, a Nady or any other decent player. If the Phillies were willing to trade everyone in the minors (they’re not) they could’ve kept the prospects they sent to Oakland and packaged them with Marson and Carrasco for Holliday and Fuentes. That would’ve been a BIG improvement, not adding a Nady.

To be honest, even if Nady and Sherrill were on this team, they’re still not a playoff team, and then you’d start next year with Ruiz as your catcher b/c you traded away Marson.

nady is hitting .328, i think hes either due for one more arb year or hes a free agent after this season. if he walks then you take the draft picks. dude, if you dont even want to go for some of the most coveted people on the market then just become sellers and blow some of these guys out of town.

theyre not going anywhere with this team right now. blanton was a moderate upgrade but hes not enough. you dont want sherrill, get someone else. but dont stand PAT. fuentes is even more expensive. colorado is overplaying their hand and i wouldnt be surprised if they dont move anybody this year. they are way out of line about fuentes.

what about damaso marte? you could throw in more and get him and nady.

who else is out there that is REALISTICALLY attainable thats much better than nady?

Pholrida, I’m getting so sick of espn’s ny bias. it was sickening hearing the analysis of tuesday’s game. If the mets had won, they would have called it a “9th inning rally” but since it was the phils who won, it was a “bullpen meltdown” that could have been avoided if they had their incredible closer. so sick of it

Xavier Nady is having a career year, he’s really not that good. I wouldn’t trade Victorino for him straight up. If he was worth what the Pirates were asking, he’d be traded already.
George Sherrill is 32! He’s a journeyman who boosted his stock during the All-Star game. He’s been a closer for exactly 1/2 a season.

Sure, adding those guys may help a little bit, but at what expense? I can understand trading away your future for Sabathia, but not Nady and Sherrill.

Myers’ breaking ball was there, but the fastball was all over the place! Is it just me or did it seem like he was in hurry, throwing a pitch every 10 seconds. I felt that if he slowed it down a bit he might have been able to dial in the heat. Once again the big bats let us down, and any talk of shane being traded should be forgotten, just like our comfy lead in the east. Madson was embarrassing; fast, but embarrassing. oh and Im pretty sure Jose Reyes spends his down time split between key west and san fran if you know what I mean…

oh and not this is a giant suprise but was espn and Erin Andrews not completely consumed with the mets organization last night?!?! wtf

id give up victorino for nady and get by in centerfield with werth as an everyday player until golson is ready to come up. it leaves some questions marks for next year but if we want this team to win now then thats what i would sacrifice.

MLb.traderumors is reporting that Gillick is much higher on Marson then Carrasco. which I translate as we could see Carassco moved. Thus making room for opposing teams to get “Happ Slapped”.

Ok, i guess they wont go get anymore starters even though i see myers being replaced by happ in like a week.

however, all im asking, out of the market thats out there right now, is to go out there and get me George Sherrill and Xavier Nady. I personally dont care if you have to trade shane victorino to do it, and i know gillicks been trying to trade him for months. you CAN get those two guys. the only untouchable here is marson. id prefer if they left carrasco alone too but the phillies have proven they arnet to be trusted when it comes to handling young pitching prospects anyway.

besides, you can always get free agents in here to buy you time and fill the gaps. if nady leaves you get first round picks anyway.

would you trade carrasco for sherrill? if carrascos so highly regarded and hes struggling against AA batting, id think about it. it would be worth it because sherill is signed for a few more years and hed be an awesome setup man. gillicks top scout was in baltimore to scout the jays orioles game. people said it was to scout burnett but that doesnt make any sense at all since gillick already went down that road. a rumor had leaked out about the phillies interest in sherrill. sherrill is on baltimore, so i think they were scouting him.

Was a little shocked to hear Mitch Williams spin Myers the way he did. I mean sure, he’s had worse starts this season but this was definately nothing to write home about. My issue is with Myers’ personality. All that cockiness and attitude he had in previous years is gone and is now replaced with a guy who seems nervous and lacks total confidence. I’m afraid his woes are far from over, and if it continues the way it has, a change is very much neccessary.

NOTE: Can we see Carrraso start sometime this season? If he’s such a stud and a prospect why can’t we see him in the big leagues? I’m starting to get a feeling that this guy is throwing his best pitches in the Minors!

I think Myers gets a “C” for his effort last night. He never really got hit hard, but he sure struggled at times to find the strike zone.

I saw that shirt in the stands last night too!
