Phillies Solve Redding, Beat Nationals

They opened the cabinet, pulled out the Dimetapp and ingested hard. They found the cure for Tim Redding.

The Phillies went down early, but broke out with a five-run fifth inning en route to an 8-5 win. In that fifth, Jimmy Rollins knocked an RBI double, Shane Victorino brought home two with a single, and Chase Utley brought he and Vic around with his 28th home run of the season. Victorino also hit a homer — his ninth, an insurance shot in the seventh.

Pat Burrell added a bases-loaded single in the first inning, getting the Phils on the board.

They didn’t hold on at first, as Jamie Moyer ran into early trouble and went down 3-2. But he was solid after, striking out five on 94 pitches. He left after six innings and looked comfortably ahead once the Nats came back to bat. Ryan Madson gave up two quick runs — which he’s been doing a lot of lately. Jayson Werth didn’t help at all, stumbling before catching what became a ground-rule double. He was brought in for Burrell on a defensive replacement move. Seriously, can Charlie Manuel stop this replacement garbage on Burrell?

Once all that ended, Chad Durbin finished off the Nats in the eighth and Brad Lidge netted his 26th save of 26 chances.

With the win (and a Mets loss) the Phillies are back in first place, 0.5 games ahead of the New Yorkers. Another positive note: both Geoff Jenkins and Carlos Ruiz had two hits in the game; Ruiz has raised his average from .202 to .217 since July 13.

First place Phillies to stay! So I’m wondering if there are any of our fans that are lame enough to get on the Mets blogs now and brag that we’re in first place. Don’t encourage them. We’re at a higher level of baseball etiquette than New Yorkers.

pat burrell leads the NL in outfield assists and hasnt had an error all year. just let him play the whole game.

we’ll take the win boys ‘n’ girls…..Carlos Ruiz warming up and had a great throw to 2nd following a strikeout. digging it.

please give Happ a spot in the rotation.

If Happ takes a spot in the rotation it’s Kendrick’s. They’re not going to put their tail between their legs and give him Blanton’s spot, Myers isn’t going anywhere pitching like he did last night, and Moyer and Hamels are OBVIOUSLY not going to leave the rotation. Hamels and Moyer are beasts this year.

Burrell may not be fast, but I don’t recall him not catching up to enough balls to justify his regular subbing. Especially when Victorino covers what he does in center field.

BTW, the AP photo of Vic colliding with McCann was ESPN’s Image of the Week.

Nice! That was a crazy play. Who still wants to trade Vic? I’m glad Gillick made him an untouchable.

haha yeah I was on a mets blog tonight and did not see one phillies troll. yet the muts fan crawl out of the woodwork here on most nights…

charlie’s pulling burrell for a defensive replacement and I think pat has got a serious gold glove shot. this hasn’t made sense all year, and yet they continue to take him out.

Burrell…a gold glove? hahahahahahahaha I love Pat, but get real.

no errors and leads the league in outfield assists. I’m saying he’s got a shot, man, not giving it to him. or maybe I’m on crack. that could be it.

Probably Sean. You need to make diving plays to win a gold glove. It’s a reason why Victorino won’t win it. Burrell couldn’t make the all-star team, do you really think he’d win a gold glove?

You right about the diving catches Phil. Burrell is nowhere near a gold glover because he’s too slow to get to most balls out there, but when he does he does the simple things and catches the ball well. But he’s a below average OF because of his range. Still, he should never be pulled late in a game.

yeah you need to make diving plays to win a gold glove… just like bobby abreu!

Jayson Werth’s “miscue” in LF was embarrassing – it should have been an error. Why in the hell does Cholly insist on pulling Pat The Glove in late innings? Awesome assist Pat!

Can someone please exterminate Chris Wheeler. He is the most annoying commentator on the planet! That pitch that Flores jacked was not “high in the zone”!!!! It was at his knees! He says that inaccurate BS all of the time!

Welcome back Chase! If anyone has the ability to turn this thing around it is Chase.

    GO PHILLIES!

Yeah Burrell’s definitely not a gold glove, but he is way too good of a player to get subbed at the end of games. Obivously Charlie Manuel’s a MLB manager and I’m not so he knows more about baseball than I do, but it just seems ridiculous to keep an all-star caliber guy on the bench late in games, especially when he’s not later career Barry Bonds-like terrible in the outfield.

Now that’s the Phillies that we know and love!

Wheeler is without a doubt the most insightful commentator they have.. don’t know how much that is worth, but he is the only one woeth listening to

Harry the K should do radio only.. Sarge is whack… Tmac is going to take over, and I think he’s done a nice job, and I like Larry Anderson, but more because he’s like a “fan” and just says whats on his mind.. like him saying they needed to put one in Reyes’ neck two weeks ago

im ok with a t-mac and sarge team, those guy s work really well together but seperate their not as good on their own.

LA is old school thats why i like him. mi believe in old school announcers in baseball who know what the game is about and dont tolerate new age fanciness or antics

I like LA because he’s a baseball purist. He just says what’s on his mind and doesn’t sugarcoat it!

    I can’t stand Chris Wheeler.

Harry still has a great voice, but he sounds grumpy most of the time.

Sarge has definitely grown on me! He was terrible at the beginning of last year, but he’s gotten much better.

I feel like wheels is the only that can ever relate something in a game to something from the past… and give an example of it. He either has a much better memory, or can find his notes much quicker than all the other guys combined

Too many guys in the Phil’s broadcast booth. When Harry the K goes, bring back Scott Graham, split play by play with TMac and Graham (two beautiful play-by-play announcers I might add (especially Graham (he’s a Parliament man))) and you split the color with Wheeler and Andersen, the stat guy and the purist and that would be perfect. Sarge sucks, he’s just using the Phillies to prep for a career with ESPN like Kruk did, except he’s nowhere near Kruk.

You guys must be cooking crack and smoking it. Wheeler and Sarge are truly wretched. The broadcast should be Harry and LA. Btw, whoever said Wheels was the most insightful person he ever heard was not on crack he was on peyote.

Wheeler insightful?????? BS! Listen, reallyl listen to what he says. He is very smooth but he is very inaccurate in everything he says. I catch him all of the time saying something to the effect “Oh, that was 5 fastballs in a row”. He is a bag a BS! Change, FB, curve, FB, FB……..5 fastballs in a row. Really people don’t just sit there and watch the game. Analyze the game and you will be amazed at how inaccurate and ridiculous he really is.

“He has such low batting average because he is just not getting any hits”.

Now that is incredibly insightful, right? Pay attention people!

Exterminate that little coch roach Wheeler!

Ya, I noticed that as well. Utley has 26 as of the first Washington game and 27 HR as of last night, not 28.
