The Garcia debacle is squarely on Gillick’s shoulders. I’d read last year that the Phils didn’t even require a physical to make the trade happen. And if that’s wrong, and they did give him a physical, then they employed the wrong doctors which is also on Gillick’s shoulders.

As for Gavin Floyd, how can anyone say he had no chance in Philly? Can you predict the future? (If so, you and me are going to the track today.) There is a strong chance that Floyd would have worked his stuff out here and would be our No. 2 right now.

I’m not in the “Gillick is a pile of shit” camp. But he has not impressed me. He has made too many mistakes: Garcia, Eaton, not going back to Lohse with a revised offer at the end of the spring, So Taguchi, WES HELMS (no one had mentioned that one yet), Rod Barrajas, failing to get a starter before this season began, getting jack shit in exchange for Bobby Abreu (who is the Yankees starting right fielder), passing on Joe Borowski (ok he sucks this year, and he wasn’t that great a closer last year, but we so desperately needed bullpen help last year that he would have worked for one season as a closer) … the list goes on.

His successes: Moyer, Tad Iguchi, Feliz, Lidge, Lohse (as a rental), signing Utley long-term … the column isn’t long.

Also, about Loshe/Gillick- Didn’t the Phils offer him more then what he’s making with the Cards? To me it seemed Loshe was over-valuing himself, and paid the price in the end.

He’s been on the DL 6 times in 6 years!!! It would not have been a smart move to make.

Sabathia is def testing the free agent market this year, so it would have been dumb to sell-out your top prospects for a rental player that can walk

Mesa was a mop-op guy that they needed because everyone in their bullpen was spent or injured at one point last season..

And for someone who knows his stuff… I can’t believe that you even brought up Rowand, because you know he wanted to be a free agent, and you know the Giants outbid themselves for Rowand.. nobody else was anywhere near what they offered him.

If getting Lidge was such a no-brainer.. every team would have been knocking down the doors to get him… most teams …and most phillies fans… thought that Lidge was done as a closer, and when he had bad knees early this year, people were knocking Gillick then too..

jose mesa was a total gas can last year who had one good game where he went 2 scoreless innings. alfonseca had liek one or two good outings but thats why those guys arent even on an mlb team. if they are i am now aware of it. lohse was key down the stretch last year and they let him go for a variety of reasons, not all of them gillicks fault.

my labrador retriever understands that getting brad lidge and signing him to an extension was critical to the success of this team. yes, my dog watches baseball because he can see it well on the hdtv. he probably understands it better than some of the phillies owners actually.

this guy needs to show me hes capable of making the move that puts this team over the top. the lidge move got them closer but then rowands departure took them a step back. so now theyre almost the same team last year except their division is worse so they appear to be better.

what gillick does NOW until the deadline is what will define his legacy for me.
