Report: Cain, Grabow Now Targets

Randy Miller is reporting the Phillies are looking into Giants pitcher Matt Cain. He writes:

Word is the Giants might part with Cain, who is 5-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 20 starts, if offered an intriguing package of young talent.

Miller also reports the Phillies are looking at the Pirates’ left-handed reliever John Grabow, who wouldn’t be worth as much as Rockies’ reliever Brian Fuentes. Grabow is 5-2 with a 3.35 ERA this season, with 37 strikeouts and 21 walks in 45.2 innings.

Cain and Grabow is more like it. Cain has much more promise than Joe Blanton (or even AJ Burnett at this moment), and I would think about giving the Giants Carrasco for him, while Grabow would be a steady lefty for the pen.

Wow, I thought Cain was off limits. I dont know what theyd want for him. id try and get away with bastardo and golson for cain. i doubt theyd go for htat though.

    grabow should be cheap.

Im going to pittsburgh for a 4-day weekend tomorrow so maybe Ill get a chance to pop on down there and do some scouting if the pirates are at home this weekend.

maybe scout nady too, hope that hte phillies go after him but he said he doesnt want to be traded

did any1 hear of the matt holiday rumor…wowowow

on 950am jody mack said that the phils have talked with the rockies

the pitching moves are not looking to good right now and there isnt a prospect id not tradde(excluding marson) to get holiday…

    rollins
    utley
    holliday
    howard
    burrell

id trade CC-victorino-golsen-and my soul to get holiday

There’s no way the Phillies go and get Matt Holliday. Don’t see that happening at all. I do like the idea of Matt Cain though, he’d be a nice steady addition.

I dont think the Giants would take Victorino for Cain straight up.

I really think the one I said earlier.. Golson, Donald, and a pitching prospect for Cain would work.

I dont think they are interested in giving us Cain AND Winn… and it would cost that much more for that deal anyway. I highly doubt the Phillies are going to get Matt Holliday…who is going to get a MONSTER deal with the Yankees or Red Sox etc when he becomes a FA

this is exhausting. i’m just going to try to enjoy some baseball and check the roster again on 8/1.

Yeah i think holliday is out of the owners league of how much money they want to pay someone. id maybe take a run at him and accept the draft picks we get when he leaves.

thatd work too, golson, donald, other prospect. omar vizquel is ancient. i doubt the phillies will give donald PT because theyre stuck with jimmy rollins

.. on that link the guy lists Golson, Donald, and Carrasco… I don’t think i’d part ways with all 3 for Matt Cain..

A lesser pitching prospect like a Josh Outman maybe.. but I don’t think you give 3 of your top 4 guys for Matt Cain, who is good, but hasn’t yet lived up to his hype

STUCK with Jimmy Rollins… interesting choice of words… he did win the MVP last year, while Donald hasn’t done anything

hell no. you dont give 3 of your top 4 guys for anybody.

    golson, outman, mazone?

    donald, outman, someone B level?

I’d give up 3 of my top 4 guys for Roy Halladay.

i know its a long shot but im saying if you get holliday you can let burrell go at the end of the season freeing up 14 mill…

you can arbirtrate howard every year

utleys locked up only person you have to worry about it hamels and he hasnt even got arbirtration yet so…

I would personally throw the house @ holliday not everyday you get a player that hits .340 35 hrs and over 120 rbis…

    hes worh it

I’d rather have a pitcher than Matt Holliday.

Phil, who’s talking about Roy Halladay?

everyone shits on our farm but we really dont have that bad of preospects we almost got sabthia only reason is they didnt want pitching they wanted hitters

They basiocally made it clear that halladay isnt going anywhere.

ok so you would rather have joe blanton then matt holliday…theres no A pitchers out there…

i agree I would love a pitcher but not some C pitcheer…i know pitching wins but honeslty our pitchers arnt that bad our BP is the best in the league only problem is eaton but the 4th and 5th hitters in the rotation don’t c the postseason

I won’t pounce on the Holliday stuff just yet, but Jody Mac is pretty trustworthy with sparse reports.

i say win now and stop worrying about the future…id love matt cain if they can pull it off…but holliday would just b silly to watch in CBP in the middle of that lineup omgggg

No, I’d rather have an elite pitcher than an elite hitter. We have 3 elite hitters already.

I think Matt Cain would be a great pick-up. Ship anyone but Carrasco and Marson.

our bullpen will not be the best in the second half without adding a fredsh arm to it. they were on fuimes, all of them except lidge because they were overworked BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE ENOUGH PITCHERS WHO CAN AT LEAST GO 7 INNINGS?

Sorry Tom, when you have a rumor spread by an undentified source with a moniker..”Orphan” regarding alledged “talks” with Colorado about Holliday, I tend to disregard it. Also the absurdity of his suggestion to trade Howard during a pennant race validates my opinion of this “source”.

Tom, Holliday plays in an even more hitter friendly park than CBP…

phil, i agree but name an elite pitcher that can be aquired…????

    We have one elite hitter.

he hits .340..idc wat park your in for that

Ive come to not concern myself with thoward. theyll go year to year until he walks. ive accepted that. hes not an issue anymore.

    mike T….eactly….utley is elite HITTEr…Howard is a bomber…

well, mike, we have one elite hitter hitting elitely AT A TIME> they take turns. first its utleys turn then its howards turn then its burrells turn. they have to follow that up by going 3 for 15 the next series though.

I really think Roy Halladay is secretly on the trade block. It doesn’t want to be leaked because it will make Jay’s fans furious, but it makes sense to put him on the block. You could give Carrasco, Donald, Golson, and Cardenas to get him I bet.

i would personally escoprt shane victorino to torono for roy halladay, and i would pay for greg golson and jason donald to join him.

i worded that poorly. I shouldn’t have said an elite hitter. We have 3 elite players. Rollins although under performing thus far is elite, Utley is god, and Howard is the most elite power hitter in baseball.

You can get him with out Victorino. They would really benefit from Donald and Cardenas.

now, toronto has a second baseman signed to a long-term contract, aaron hill, so the shortstop position is what they need to secure, and that screams donald.

    but back to matt cain…

howard likes to do some critic silencing. when hes getting buried really bad in the media it seems like a few days later he starts going burzurk and driving in scores of runs

    it’s not a dumb rumor it’s on a couple sites a d on 950am jody mack

The people commenting on mlbtraderumors about the Phillies getting Cain are saying Howard or Utley for Cain. I think they smoke crack. I’d say Howard for Lincecum straight up, but not Cain.

    I’d do Howard for Cain.

Cain would be a B+/A-. He is a good young pitcher that could be around a while if they wanted. I say go for that if possible. No Carrasco or Marson in the deal obviously, but that would be good. Find a way to get Winn packaged in the deal and we have something going.

It would be fun to have Holliday bat 3rd for us, but guys, we all really know that would not happen. Our OF would be Holliday, Burrell and Werth/Victorino in CF? Hope the pitchers throw alot of GB!!!

trades like that dont happen usually. its all about the prospects

Howard for Cain, are you serious Mike T? You’d give up the most elite power hitter in baseball for someone that we don’t even know is going to be a great pitcher?

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Phillies’ talks for Joe Blanton are “gaining momentum.” Olney believes this deal makes sense, and that it could come together quickly.

If we get Blanton it better be for total garbage prospects.

Come on a deal for Cain is on a par with when we were rumored to be looking at a deal centred around Abreu for A-Rod all that time ago, not gonna happen unless the Giants clean house all the way which their not going to do.

Would be suprised if the Blanton deal happens, if that gets done in our favour that’ll be a great deal but might not be the right guy.

Can’t see the Giants parting with Cain, but I agree with you, Tim: were he available, I’d even part with Carrasco to get the deal done. Per Cot’s Baseball Contracts, he’s signed through 2010 at a total of $6.9 million, plus a $6.25 million team option for 2011. So really, you’d be getting three and a half years of Cain at far, far below market value.

Not quite so excited about the Blanton thing. I hope Olney’s wrong, or that the Phils are trying to force the Jays’ or Mariners’ hand into a deal for Burnett or Bedard.
