Report: Cain, Grabow Now Targets

Randy Miller is reporting the Phillies are looking into Giants pitcher Matt Cain. He writes:
Word is the Giants might part with Cain, who is 5-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 20 starts, if offered an intriguing package of young talent.
Miller also reports the Phillies are looking at the Pirates’ left-handed reliever John Grabow, who wouldn’t be worth as much as Rockies’ reliever Brian Fuentes. Grabow is 5-2 with a 3.35 ERA this season, with 37 strikeouts and 21 walks in 45.2 innings.
Cain and Grabow is more like it. Cain has much more promise than Joe Blanton (or even AJ Burnett at this moment), and I would think about giving the Giants Carrasco for him, while Grabow would be a steady lefty for the pen.

1. Burrell is not a RF
2. The Mets have Church in RF, so they do not need a RF next year
3. The Mets won’t sign Burrell longterm because Fernando Martinez will be ready next year and is projected to put up Burrel-esqe stats
If the Mets are to make a run at any free agent this offseason, it will be Mark Teixeira.

Just remember that Gillick chose to sign Kris Benson over Kyle Lohshe. Thats unfriggin believable.

Not as bad as Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. That was pretty FUNNY!

Also Gavin, it’s not like Gillick didn’t make Loshe an adequate offer.

The Pirates don’t need Burrell and won’t pay Burrell.

I can’t imagine the Braves would trade us Hudson unless we made an offer so over the top that it would cripple the farm system and make no long-term sense. I agree he’d be a great fit; it’s too bad he doesn’t play for the Giants, Rockies, or some AL team.

Personally, I still like the idea of offering the A’s enough to get Duchscherer and Embree. May be impossible; no idea what Beane’s price would be. It scares me to hear that the Phils are heating up in the Blanton ‘chase’ though.

Hahahaha. No….Gavin.
I will say tis. IMO, if Myers comes back and pitches 90% of what he should and Jimmy Rollins gets on base at a .380-.400 clip like he did last year, then we dont need Blanton or Cain.

Pete: I would for the Phils to acquire Duchscherer but I don’t think the A’s are going to make him available for any cost. I heard the A’s were talking about having him sign an extension since he would be a free agent after the 09 season I believe.
Alan Embree would be a nice acquisition to the Phillies bullpen, assuming the asking price isn’t too high. I would still rather have Grabow though.

I think that if Sheets wants $15M per… he becomes a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.. There are NUMEROUS reports out there that Gillick has convinved the owners that it will take 1 more top of the rotation pitcher to get this team to advance in the postseason.
Which is why the went after CC Sabathia.. they just didn’t have the PowerBat that the tribe was looking for. Harden was an injury risk, and you can’t blame them for passing on him. Burnett is probably more talented then Blanton, but his contract and his asking price are both much higher.
If you can imagine a rotation of Sheet, Hamels, Blanton, Kendrick, Carrasco… they would win 90+ games next year.. trade Myers and keep Moyer around in whatever role he wants.. or start him in the rotation until everyone is convinced Carrasco is ready (shiiiiiit… I just snapped-out of the most amazing daydream)

The Phillies ownership tips 5% at restaraunts. There’s zero percent chance they’d sign Sheets,

The Phillies owners are so cheap. They will bring in over 200 mill this year and they wont let Gillick open the wallet. Boo? Fuck you?

Blanton will be okay I guess — better that Eaton. i would have preferred Cain, but I wonder what kind of price tag we would have had to cough up to get that.

Okay, let the games begin…what is to be done with Eaton, and when will it happen? Bullpen immediately? One more start? Released? Driven to the middle of nowhere and left for dead?

I’m anticipating the soon-to-be-released Karate Kid film. It will bring back all those fabulous 1980s memories, and provide upcoming memories to my children.
