Report: Phils Looking At Blanton

Jim Salisbury today dropped Joe Blanton as someone in whom the Phillies are showing interest. Blanton is 5-12 with a 4.96 ERA this season, carrying a 77 ERA+. That’s what Adam Eaton has.
For his career, Blanton is an even 100 in the ERA+ category. Absolutely average.
Don’t do it, Phils. It’s not worth it.

wasn’t there rumors that we were going to give up Vic for this guy in the off season? no way, i pass on this guy, not sure he really improves our situation.

Blanton is not a big improvement over Myers. And, as Tim has laid out in recent posts, not what we need.
BTW, it looks like even the Yankees are scared of A.J. Burnett’s contract. He isn’t coming here anyway, but if the freakin’ Yankees think his contract is so bad that they don’t want to touch him, then we shouldn’t even be considering it.
I fear there are no answers this year. We must make next year our year.

Forget going after many of these “B” list starters we are currently linked to. Are Blanton, Maddox or Burnett for that matter much better than Happ, Myers or Kendrick?? Their stats say it is a wash. I think the Phils should go after a big bat. If we are going to trade prospects from an already thin system, go get a big bat that will cost some $ and just try to freekin’ outscore everyone. Maybe add an arm to the pen, but getting a guy like Ichiro or Holladay will make the lineup potent. Rollins is going to start hitting, Utley will come back around and Howard is heating up. If we can score 7-8 runs per game we might be able to get buy with the current make-up of the staff. But definitely DON’T go wasting prospects on guys like Blanton, Arroyo or Byrd!!

You need to add depth tahts all. if they werent going to get sabathia then you need to add depth. thats the only thing left now. one more of their starters will need a break or replacement or somehting you need to add to the mix there.
hey, theyre NOT going to score 7-8 runs pergame against lefitimate starting pitching. its not going to happen ok. thats why THEY need pitching.

Hopefully there is someone out there that has not been mentioned. None of these guys are worth much and I am not sure other than Geoff’s comment about depth that they would add anything else to our team.

I think the situation with Burnett is pretty clear, his numbers are not consistent and outside of the obvious injury concern his contract situation is too unpredictable, so we’ll take him but will not give more than a compensatory package and not the one Toronto coverts. Wouldn’t rule out a deal for Bedard just yet although I do question what adding another rotation filler will do past fan the flames and result in us eating Eaton’s salary bringing our wasted salary up to $30m in 3 years of money spent that doesn’t end up on the diamond (Garcia, trading Helms and eating Eaton’s salary).
Gillick has to be aggressive here, the options are limited and the way the deal goes down and the atmosphere it creates will be just as important as the incoming player. The message coming from the FO has to be this is the guy that will take your spot on the roster not here’s the guy who’s going to pick up the slack for you.

Give Carrasco or Mazone a shot. Hell, I would give Savery a run. I think the number one thing to do is protect prospects from deals for B starters. I dont think there are really any “A” staters that are worth the trade, not Bedard or Burnett. I think Harden was the only one worth the trade bounty, and becasue he is ot a rental player.

Yes, they lost the chance to win the National League when they failed to get Rich harden. what did we say like the whole firs thalf? no excuses anymore. they failed to act, now its more excuses again.

This all depends on who we give up, Billy Beane is gonna rob us though.

Rental players are not as bad as they sound, the deal can work in your favour in the next draft. Burnett is idea if he does opt out of his contract and we can acquire him for a smaller package, giving up a high potential but not elite prospect and a couple of long shots for a guy who’ll give you a short-term boost and net two high picks in the coming draft is just good work by a front office when they can get a deal like that done.
By all means give Mazone a shot but lets get Carrasco ready to win his job in the rotation in ST. Savery and Outman would make nice additions to the pen before being transitioned into starters if needed, Outman’s already being transitioned into a reliever. We do need a bonifide number 2 because the Moyer/Kendrick duo is great at the back of the rotation frustrating the opponents but there has to be something concrete in between and unfortunately were not in a position we can continue to experiment.

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Joe Blanton????? No! I agree with others, plan should be to go with Hamels, Happ, Myers, Moyer and Kendrick and either get a bat to replace Taguchi and wait till the off season to get the #2 we need.

should read, “and get a bat to replace taguchi plus wait till the offseason to get the #2 we need.”

What about benson or re-aquiring Garcia in augast when he should be ready for a return?

Benson is a gamble but I’d be in favor of getting Garcia.

Benson hasn’t looked good in the minors and Garcia he wouldn’t be a bad pick up but alot of other teams are interested in him and i doubt they’ll go for him.

As much as you guys dont like the idea of getting Blanton, he’s one of our only options left. We’ve begged for a starter but afterall, beggers cant be chosers.

Rental players are not that great, if you dont win a championship and if a team with a top 15 draft pick signs them. then you do not get a 1st round draft pick, you get sanwich picks 3-5th rounds which isnt half bad but they tend to take longer to develop. I would like to see the Phils delve deeper to Latin America for prospects

Blanton would be better than a lot of guys on the B list. theyre basically saying that theyre going after the B list now.

Billy Beane will ask for a kings ransom to get Blanton. It’s really not worth it, we’re better off hoping Myers comes around and Happ pans out.

Put Myers and Happ in the rotation and place Eaton in the pen for long relief/mop up. Go get another bat and release So (maybe they can get a crate of tongue depressors or a box of sunflower seeds for the dugout for him). Roll the dice that Myers can figure it out and Happ is ready to make this jump perminently. He has looked fairly sharp in his 2 starts and not overwhelmed by the situation thus far. The Phils are going to have to outscore people and pray the starters can give them 6 innings every night and keep them in the game. When they were hot at the end of June and built their lead in the division it was that formula at work.

I dont know that theyre going to get someone whos better. This guy would be good for depth and im ok with it, but you need MORE than him. not just him. that cant be your big guy.
ill bet the phillies even try to run him out there second and act like hes their number two guy, just watch.

Blanton is OK, but not worth trading top prospects for..it would just be adding another arm .. and if we want to do that, lets add local guys
I know some guys on my college team that could throw about 85 mph…

I saw this coming last week – it’s going to happen, and it better happen for cheap. There is no one else available. This is what they did last year, and it barely got us to the NLDS.
I told you this team is not a good team unless they make a NOTABLE improvement within their pitching staff. This is an improvement, but it is not NOTABLE. Therefore, “the Phillies are just not a . . . .” Exactly.

I saw this coming in the beginning of the season, but i thought blanton would be more valued and cost more because HE WOULD HAVE, YKNOW, A GOOD SEASON! but he isnt.
hes better than adam eaton and he can get you through 7 innings. in that way hes more effective than jamie moyer. not in terms of ERA and runs though.

Don M..Im training for hardball because its too late this year…but, I can throw like reagan-era sinkers and a changeup, maybe i can improve the team.

the other pitches arent as effective as those two. the slider doesnt move a lot and the curveball isnt accurate. but at least the sinker/changeup combo is down pat.

Im up for any move that improves the team without packing the future… If Burrell is going to stay, you can move Golson… Donald doesn’t have a spot here, so he can be moved… I’d like them to keep their young pitchers, but that is what Beane always goes after…
It will be interesting to see what, if anything, they do

Geoff… I can throw a Nixon Era fastball, it is very tricky to hit but eventaully will get caught. Therefore I am an improvement over eaton.
Also you realize Swindle can throw a Dwight D. Eisenhauer curve?

Why not put Myers back in the Rotation with Durbin and get Fuentes. He would be worth more than the starters available and cost less.
Fuentes/Romero/Lidge/Gordon/Condrey/Seanez/Eaton
Hamels/Moyer/Kendrick/Durbin/Myers
Are any of our minor league catchers a better bet than Carlos Ruiz. He still has options I believe.

What’s Terry Mulholland doing nowadays?….maybe we sign him….tell him that we’d rather have him walk guys than give up a homerun…then just pick them off of first everytime….it’s a huge upgrade over eaton

I’ll be honest……any move they make after releasing Adam eaton will improve our team, guys.
I’d take happ over Blanton.

If another person starts with this RELEASE CARLOS RUIZ crap…
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20080711_Phillies_Notes__Ruiz_s_catching_job_safe_despite_struggles_at_plate.html
The highlights of this are:
Charlie Manuel is aware that Carlos Ruiz has been in a terrible slump for almost two months.
But the Phillies’ manager also knows he likes Ruiz’s defense and his ability to handle the pitching staff. He also knows that if people are screaming about the impact the No. 8 hitter is having on the Phils’ offense, it probably means the first seven guys in the lineup aren’t doing as much as they should.
and
“It’s awfully hard to switch out a catcher midyear,” assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle said yesterday before the Phillies’ 4-1 win over St. Louis at Citizens Bank Park. “He’s a catcher who knows our staff. They like him. They’re comfortable. He’s catching and throwing well.”
In fact, Ruiz has a 3.56 catcher’s ERA – the best catcher’s ERA in the National League.
……….. .. . .. .. ..

Yeah, he did…that’s my point exactly. Coste hasn’t been looking too sharp at the dish either. Our catcher spot is going to be in turmoil until next season. That’s just the way it is. I’d be okay with Ruiz and his mandoza line if the rest of the team was hitting.
