David Murphy reports Chase Utley has a hip injury.
From GM Pat Gillick:
“Chase has been bothered by a little bit of an injury that he’s been playing with. (He’s) having a little bit of a problem with his hip. It’s been a little bit sore. Nothing to keep him out of the lineup, but certainly if it’s sore a little bit it could have some effect on his hitting.”
Since July 3, Utley is 17-for-68 (.250). We’ve been wondering why he has struggled – really, since May – but have erred on the side of just slumping. Now it’s becoming evident there’s something even greater that’s hampering Utley’s ability to remain an offensive force. This needs to be addressed.

Don’t worry too much about this. Its another example of phillies management “enabling” their slumping players by providing excuses for them instead of holding them accountable. (See Rollins, jimmy-nagging ankle injury)

If the hip injury is bothering him that bad, give him couple days off.

I agree. If this is the case, why not give him a week off rather than keep the nagging injury from healing. Another case of the Phillies making a poor decision when faced with a problem. Stupid

But the injury isn’t bad enough to keep him out of the line up guys! Hold on, I’m on the phone with these guys in Seattle right now!

he’s made some ridiculous plays in the field with his “hip injury” so it must not be too bad. There must be something about the batter’s box dirt that’s giving him issues

The team’s poor record at handling injuries/medical issues aside, Utley needs a day or two off. Actually, Tuesday is the perfect time. Your facing a shitty Nats team on the road in a series against a non-contender. With the Monday off, this will give him two days in a row to rest. If there’s any team we can afford not to have him play against, it’s Washington.
Charlie: please sit Chase on Tuesday (at least). We want him healthy for the important games down the stretch.

If hes hurt then go on the 15 day DL retroactively. I cant stand the way they handle this type of thing. If hes not hurt then theres no excuse.

it could only be retroactive if he hadn’t played in the last couple games, it’s retroactive to the last game you played

I have no doubt that the great medical staff we have will take a look at Utley and clear him to play in no time!

Chase started looking bad, both physically and on the field, during and definitely after the west coast road trip. I’ve been questioning the guys on DNL for weeks now, Chase looks like he’s losing weight, looks lethargic, just not himself. Like I said before, I think maybe he’s hitting the painkillers and trying to play thru an injury. They should DL him right now so he’s ready for a possible playoff run.
