Rollins: We’re Not Worried

In the midst of a quote-filled Monday, Jimmy Rollins gave us this nugget in response to Charlie Manuel’s words pressing the offense to play baseball:
“He’s pretty much right, but we’ll get out of it. We don’t get concerned until late. Coaches do that now. We go play.”
Allow me to send a memo to Jimmy Rollins: Grow up. Grow stones. Grow whatever.
And now we’re seeing the problem with this 2008 brand of Phillies. Where last year’s team seemed to bleed passion and heart, this year’s team looks like a bunch of preening talkers. It looks like a team ripe with issues. It looks like last year’s Mets. And that’s no good thing.
Rollins is supposed to be the team leader, but he brushes off “concern” and practically tells us he doesn’t completely care about the current state of his team. It’s the kind of stupefied swagger that elicits slings in Philadelphia. We shouldn’t stand for this sludge.
The eternal question of “Would they miss Aaron Rowand” is back on the dockets because of all this. Now we can see why. For one, he provided the team a contact-hitting righty capable of picking up the big boys when they fail. I’m almost convinced Rowand would’ve won this team another four games with his hitting.
Then there’s the clubhouse leader position. I thought that was overrated — after seeing Rollins’ quote, I’m not as convinced. This team desperately needs a kick in the groin. Rollins needs to wake up — I still can’t rule out an injury.
It’s a shame, really, because there’s a lot of talent here. Stack the Phils against most anyone, on paper, and you have a good team. But this right now is a bad team trapped inside a good team. And the bad team is making its way out.

“Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd has scoured baseball, talking to the Mets, Angels, Phillies and many others (the Dodgers make sense, if owner Frank McCourt would approve a trade), and he’s shooting for a pretty good-sized haul. O’Dowd wanted Carlos Beltran as part of a package from the Mets, a request that was rejected by New York. And, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times, O’Dowd sought second baseman Howie Kendrick, pitching prospect Nick Adenhart and either Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders for Holliday, a proposition the Angels also rejected.” – Jon Heyman, SI.com.
If that’s what O’Dowd is really looking for, the Phils have no chance.

haha that’s a joke. Holliday is not worth that.

Well, I think the rest of baseball is telling him hes way out of line. He should shoot for victorino carrasco and someone else decent as a prospect for holliday alone. his price for fuentes is hubris too. he wont get that. people will shift to damaso marte and drive up his price. i even heard arthur rhodes thrown in there, who im pretty sure we already had here before as a setup man.

It just seems like the Phillies are last in line, as usual.

Instead of trading for Blanton we should have just made a big package for Grabow, Nady, and Marte. IT would have solved all 3 of our problems in 1 shot.

But Phil, honestly, we didn’t give up shit for Blanton. We can still throw a package together — Carrasco, Golson, Victorino, Donald, Harman.

I think we gave up too much for Blanton. Cardenas is a top 100 prospect.

Or, if we’re really feeling risky… JD Durbin! Haha, shit.

Cardenas is a good prospect and he might be fine, but even guys like joe average are valuable because hes better than 4/5 of our rotation AND he is a known quantity. he eats innings, along with other things. its getting by, but thats aluable because 70% of the pitching is complete garbage anymore in baseball. so if someone isnt total garbage then they have value. thats worth cardenas. the other two guys are throw ins. outman was messed up by the farm system. they switched him abck and forth too much. the other guy i had to look up because hes so obscure.
they gave up one good prospect for blanton basically. thats fair. beane got a good return for someone like that.

in 2004.. the #4 prospect in baseball was RICKIE WEEKS…
in 2005.. the #12 prospect in baseball was DALLAS MCPHERSON.
in 2000.. the #64 overall prospect in baseball was… ADAM EATON..
My point is… being a top prospect doesn’t mean a thing compared to a guy that has had some success at the Major League level… they gave up NOTHING to get Blanton

thats quite correct don m. its a good deal for beane though. good for us too. beane will get a guy with good promise and a few tack-ons who you can find anywhere.

That’s very true. Adam Eaton was once a top prospect? What a joke. haha

Adam Eaton, Kris Benson, and Brett Myers are all 1st round draft picks too.. with Cole Hamels… we were LOADED “talent-wise” going into this year.
Shame that talent and once being a top prospect don’t win you any games..
Anyone that doesn’t think this Blanton trade improves the team is a moron and doesn’t know anything about baseball. There are still people calling the sports talk stations bitching about it… I guess they have to wait a couple weeks before they can start complaining about which guys should be the 52nd and 53rd players on the Eagles roster…

I dont even want to hear all the garbage on the radio about the eagles. the nfl has become the same thing as dancing with the stars. like total choreographed garbage.
ill stick with baseball and hockey and college football.
the blanton trade was fine, they still need to do more, but i think its documented that theyve been trying to.

The NFL and NBA are for those with short attention spans – it’s a fact.

But I don’t mind the NBA as much — it’s the NFL that has become this overbearing 365 days a year circus. While I’m at it, fuck ESPN.

I guess now that I’m out of college, and I don’t watch ESPN alllll day every day… the NFL just isn’t all that important to me anymore..
or maybe its because it became a f*cking joke with the Mike Vick.. Who is Tom Brady dating… Is Brett Favre really retiring.. All these dudes not reporting to camp… Imagine a baseball player not reporting to Spring Training (Manny Ramirez tried that stunt)..
But I agree.. you were like an outcast if you didn’t BLEED GREEN… and I got super-tired of all these idiots saying how they’ve been the Eagles #1 most diehard fan since birth, and never missed a game.. when I can clearly remember games not beng televised in the 90s because they couldn’t sell enough seats for home games.
The Phillies are now becomming a harder ticket to get than the Eagles.. to a degree its nice to see the stadium packed all the time, but sometimes its kinda beat too that the only way to get tickets is to pay $10382.34 on stubhub

Make sure you guys listen to my show tomorrow morning. We’ll touch on the Phils from 6:45 to 7, and then we’ll have special guests Joe Banner, Andy Reid and Arlen Spector to talk about the Eagles for the next 8 hours. Now let me tell you about my dinner last night at Carrabba’s.

NBA just sucks because they started drafting all high school and foreign players with their first picks, and nobody ever heard of any of them.. and the only highlights you ever see are breakaway dunks or 3-pointers.
Like 2 weeks, ESPN top 10 plays of the week… OJ MAYO in a summer league game stole the ball… dribbled down the court.. dunked it… and it was the #6 play of the week!! Over all these nasty web gems and stuff in baseball, and hole-in-ones and stuff in golf.
The NHL gets NO props on ESPN, I understand people not loving hockey.. but cover all the sports.. not just football and basketball.. and when you cover baseball… gives us more the Red Sox, Cubs, Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, Angels.. I used to hate CSN too because I thought it was so boring, but now I always watch that over ESPN stuff

I watch all the podcasts and listen to the shows on MLB.com. It’s not great, but it’s NFL free.

Well, you can at least expect to see Utley on ESPN if he does something half way good. Chase Utley grounded out to 2nd base. He’s this year’s MVP. Who are the rest of the Phillies? Onto the Mets, they’ve won 10 in a row. I can’t believe they’re not in 1st place eventhough the Phillies have their 3rd consecutive MVP. ESPN is such a joke.

I thought i was the only one that cant stand the nfl, good to know im not the only one.
yes,the top play will be a 7 foot guy easily dunking the ball over like plays that require skill and athleticism.
im so glad baseball made a huge comeback. hockeys on its way back too.

I love the NHL, but I’m a big AHL nerd — there’s nothing better than going to a playoff hockey game.

The Flyers-Devils game last year… the 2nd-to-last… when they clinched a playoff spot… was one of the most exciting sporting events i’ve ever been to.

Most sports are so much better on TV because of the high-def and the different camera angles.. the instant replay..
but Hockey is WITHOUT A DOUBT.. the best sport to go see live..
Baseball if you have good seats.. Football sucks in person… and I only go to basketball games once every 5 years or so if i get free tickets..
College basketball is still awesome though.. LaSalle beating St. Joe’s at the Palestra last year was a GREAT game to watch.. and fans from both sides gave a standing ovation at the end.

hockey is awesome live. so fast-paced. wachovia is the best atmosphere in all of hockey. total nuthouse, everyone wasted.
meanwhile, in football they stand around with their hands on their hips like 80% of the time.

Tim.. I think it’s time again for you to remind the posters that this is a…. PHILLIES Nation site. (chuckle)
I agree with Amanda’s post here regarding a quote by Rollins. She defended him by saying… “it was taking way out of context, you guys are making it sound like he said i dont care, im not concerned about anything, and if u read it i think hes just saying that hes not concerned because they know they can do better..”. Taking it out of context and interpreting it to fit a biased point of view toward a player is a common occurrence not just on this site but also on other blogs and of course the media. You often hear players complain about being misquoted or misinterpreted. It goes on all the time. Ahh-h, how I remember Mike Schmidt’s problem with the media and his reluctance to speak to them as a result.
