I think it is awesome that the Mets cannot get Santana any run support! I mean, he is their ace, the guy paid to put him over the top and the Mets are treating him like Adam Eaton. Santana is usually lights out in the 2nd half but his stuff this 1st half is much better then in his previous years.

I think if middle relievers got a chance to make the All-star team, Durbin would be a shoe in. As far as giving him an extension, well, let’s see how he pitches in September first. If he can pitch us into the postseason give him the same contract as Gordon when he comes off the books.

The Phils do need to re-sign Lidge though. Seriously, he has found his game again and there is no reason he cannot dominate for another 3-5 years. Then if Happ can become like Kendrick, then include Myers in the Sabathia package. And I wouldn’t care if CC only stays through the WS victory!

I’d rather the Phils resign Durbin over Burrell. The only reason Durbin might leave is because he wants to go test free agency to be a starter, but I think he’s starting to like his role on the team and is beginning to accept it. He knows he’s an elite bullpen piece, probably the best overall bullpen guy in the game right now, and I’m sure he realizes he’s stuck in that position. The Brewers won’t have the money to overpay for him. They’re a small market club. We’ll resign him, I’m positive of it.

Good point Phil, with Gordon flirting with the DL at all times it’s far fetched to think if he plays next year that the Phils will offer much more than a moderate salary. If we can extend Durbin for another 2 years right now that’s a great move but this is a guy who’s stock will be high enough to write his own ticket some clubs like the Brewers will be happy to overpay for as an elite set-up man or give him that starters gig.

It’s tough to get those deals done prior to the end of the year as the player has the power of free agency and driving up the price and current market value is set. Just look at Lohse, we offered him the best deal but he waited to see what the market value was and it backfired on him.

Would be really nice to see the Phils come out and annouce the re-signing of Burrell or Lidge (would deflect some attention off the rumors swirling over starting pitching)

I was at the game last night. A Mets fan was taking a piss in a stall in a Men’s bathroom. A drunk Phillies fan kicked the door open and threw a full plastic beer bottle at him – nailed him square in the back – beer everywhere. When the Mets fan came out of the stall, the Phillies fan pushed him to the ground. Mets fan was scared to death being in that situation with a room filled with Phillies fans. I don’t think the scuffle was provoked. Stories like this sicken me. Other than that, I only saw some playful verbal exchanges between opposing fans.

After Happ’s outing, Charlie Manuel said he saw improvement compared to last year’s only start vs Mets. He had a “Better fastball” and more command. Manuel went on to say he could “use a little more seasoning”.

It will interesting to see if Happ can continue to make progress (or be “hapless”; couldn’t resist it).

On the subject of starters, latest report on Benson:

“RHP Kris Benson was roughed up in his second start for Class AAA Lehigh Valley. Benson, attempting to return to the majors after shoulder surgery in March 2007, allowed six runs on nine hits, walked two and fanned two over five innings against Pawtucket on Friday night. In four minor-league starts between Lehigh Valley and Class A Clearwater, Benson has allowed 15 runs on 24 hits in 15-2/3 innings for an 8.62 ERA.”

I’m beginning to have doubts about his chance of being call up when the roster expands to 40 on September 1st.

why do you have a policy of waiting until the player can see the market and want to test it so they will leave? as a GM, you dont want them to see the market that awaits them. once they see that, then youll have to cough up more money or you wont get them back. just get it done

this is where pat gillick is a bad general manager. yes, you got chad durbin in here and hes doing a good job. he has become a key element to the bullpen. relievers usually dont get more than 4 years unless theyre K-Rod or Mariano Rivera. ok, so why let an issue linger until the offseason when theres a lot more to dela with. just go to chad and offer him an extension similar to what jc romero got. boom. done. now you can use those guys as a combo for a few years now.

To Brian Michael~ Sounds like nitpicking. “Clutch” hitting for me is getting RBIs with RISP. Howard (with NL leading 73 RBIs) has the best record on the team with RISP.

NJ Gordon comes off our books next year. Gordon makes a lot of money. Pay Durbin Gordon’s old salary or less. They’ll resign Durbin, and he really likes it here. I’m sure he won’t even make it to free agency.

The funny thing is, thats really what it would take to get Harden.. its def not worth it in my opinion.

I think Werth is very good, and could start for most teams, Madson is quietly having a very very good year in the bullpen… Donald and Castro i’d be OK with trading since Donald has nowhere to play on the roster, and Castro hasn’t yet panned out

I know it’s unrelated to last nights game but thought that would make you guys laugh.
