Carrasco Impresses In First AAA Start

Carlos Carrasco pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs (none earned) on six hits in his first AAA start with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

The No. 1 prospect threw 102 pitches, 67 for strikes. According to Joseph Santoliquito of the Inquirer, he had “great command of his fastball, changeup and curveball.” He was throwing in the mid-90s with a changeup in the mid-80s.

Asst. GM Ruben Amaro agreed that he looked good:

“He threw strikes, was very aggressive, going after hitters, and looked very poised and under control to me. But whether or not we’ll call him up is something we can’t discuss publicly. We would need a reason to bring him … But there is no question he has major league stuff.”

Whether it bodes well for his Major League prospects or not, it’s a promising start for Carrasco against close to MLB-quality talent. They should take it one start at a time with him.

This might be a very good problem to have if Carrasco and Happ would actually be able to contribute at the Major League level.

That would POSSIBLY make Myers expendable on the offseason, but if Myers keeps pitching well, we won’t want to trade him… what a nice problem that would be!

I would trade him to boston for hideki okajima and a prospect. okajimas value has declined slightly and you might be able to pick him up as a legitiamte left-handed setupman.

Why would Boton want to trade Okajima? They’re in the middle of a pennant chase right now and no mater how good Corrasco is going to be he’s not going to do a great deal for them just now.

    this is certaintly hopeful.

also, when i say trade him i meant myers not carrasco. myers to boston. rollins to boston. might as well throw in someone else too.

i wonder if carrasco is indeed in this rotation next year

not right now, i said the offseason.

I think Carrasco starts at AAA next year, similar to a Clayton Kershaw type situation with LA this year. The rotation solids next year should be as such:

    Cole Hamels
    Kyle Kendrick
    Jamie Moyer
    Joe Blanton

I think Myers could go back to a pen role, (or be dealt), and I would assume they would give Happ the starting role before Carrasco out of the shoot, since he already has some big league experience. My thinking is that they would start Carrasco at AAA, and wait for a pitcher to either suck or get hurt.

side note: I’m surprised they didn’t bring up Marson with Carrasco. He’s the only catcher he’s really thrown too over the course of his minor league career.

Well for them to bring up Marson, they would need to do something with Jaramillo. I guess they could flop them, but Carrasco should get used to having different batter partners catching his stuff.

Carassco cant be attached to Marson, expierience reasons.

I would be really, really surprised if Jaime Moyer is pitching next year.

I wouldn’t, Moyer has stated he has no plans to stop pitching…

Don’t be suprised, Moyer’s said he has every intention to pitch passed this year and it’s very unlikely for it to be for any other team than the Phils with the success he’s had here. If Myers does continue to return to form don’t be surpised at all if Carrasco, Happ and all the other prospects struggle to find a spot in next years rotation. There will be a lot of competition for those middle spots with the back-end pretty much set.

Ha, I don’t know any other team with such a set “back end”

Trading Carlos Carrasco for Okajima? No. Just no.

griffin…brett myers for okajima, not carrasco. i may want to trade jimmy rollins but im not crazy enough to trade carrasco for okajima.

Moyer’s contract is up, but he’s made it clear he likes Philly and wants to keep pitching. We’ll see if they try to resign him.

of course you add pieces to the deal here and there. to make it maximize the value.

Geoff, you and your ridiculous trades…you need to buy MLB 2008 and get into Franchise Mode or something.

I play that game all the time. Its the best baseball game ever made. even in that game they make you use prospects though. so you cant really accuse me of thinking that it would work in real life because it happened in a videogame. thats what makes it awesome, its realistic liek that.

in any event. im cooking one up that ill roll out tomorrow.

i admit that i enjoy stirring things up while multitasking at work.

lol…I’m glad you enjoy it. You seem to be good at it. I bought MLB 2007 (or maybe it was 06) and enjoyed it, but don’t get the time to play it much. Is MLB 2008 that much different than the others?

    yes.

second best sports game (nhl08 is the best so far)

I hate Okijima! He is the slowest working pitcher in the history of the game.

Watching the Red Sox last year in the playoffs was painful when he came into the game. He freakin’ walks a lap around the mound after every pitch it seems. That’s part of the reason why the games lasted 5 friggin’ hours! That and the lame DH.

I disagree, I think Super Donkey Kong is better!

Tecmo Super Bowl. QB Eagles, ’nuff said.

The Phillies should give Moyer a deal like Wakefield’s, something like 4-5MM per with a perpetual team option. I can’t imagine that Boston would trade Myers for Okajima, and if Myers keeps pitching like his last 2 starts, we’d want him in the rotation anyway. It’s hard to imagine the Phils will make any serious bid for CC or Sheets, so the rotation isn’t going to change much for next year barring a major trade at the winter meetings.

Right now, I’d like to see Happ in there with Kendrick at AAA to work on an out pitch, but that demotion may kill Kendrick’s confidence, so it’s not necessarily a realistic hope. Next year should bring an interesting competition for the rotation, with Hamels the only guy locked in.

Forget Sheets, too oft injured. I think it would be interesting to see if the Phils make a play for Burnett once he opts out?

PSU Fan – I have to agree 100%! Super Tecmo Bowl is the best football game ever. I loved it when you hit a guy and you just knew the player limping off the field was the next screen coming.

I was a monster with Bills. Bruce Smith and Thurman Thomas were unstoppable!

Also, I swear when you picked your opponents play, the buttons in the play-select screen blinked a different color.

Eb, that would be tits if Burnett did A) opt out and B) the Phils were able to land him. That would be a killer start to the rotation.

I think it’s a lock that Burnett does opt out, by the way. He’s due $12MM each of the next two years under his current contract, but he can get $15-20MM per year if he goes the FA route. And you know he will.

The Phils have $67.4 million tied up next season, which assumes they buy out So Taguchi instead of paying him for the last year of his contract, and that they buy out Gordon. If they keep Gordon, it’s another $3.5MM, and Taguchi is another $1.1MM. So they have potentially $70MM already on the books, and that does not include arbitration (or non-arbitration eligible) eligible players: Howard, Blanton, Werth, Madson, Bruntlett, Hamels, Victorino, Kendrick, Dobbs, Ruiz, Condrey, Coste, etc. This also takes into account that Burrell, Durbin, and Moyer will be FA’s. Figure Howard will get $10-15 million, Blanton at least his current $3.7MM, Madson’s $1.4MM, Werth’s 1.7MM. Victorino, Hamels, Happ, and a few others will still be cheap ($1MM or less). So, unless the Phils owners are willing to expand the payroll to $120 or $130MM, I think they either go after resigning Burrell, or give up on him to try and get a pitcher. I’ll be surprised if they go after both but we’ll have to see.

Anyone know Bastardo’s injury status? He was pitching better than Carrasco for the most part before he got hurt.

I don’t think Moyer is coming back next year. I’d love him too because he’s the man, but I’m not banking on it.

I’m just waiting for it to come out on the Wii Virtual Console. I’ve been disappointed thus far dammit! I never knew they came out with it for Genesis. I only ever played it on NES.

anyone else hype as shit for this series? i can’t wait.

I cant wait. This team is lucky that the mets allowed thme back into first place. They really screwed it up the first time, now theyre back ahead a little. This series is a HUGE opportunity for this team to put 5 games between themselves and the marlins with a sweep. they have to have two out of three, and a sweep would also help. they MUST win this series. Huge, critical divisional battle starting tonight. unfortunately, i have tickets for the pirates series and not this one.

Who are we trading today, Geoff? Taguchi for… John Lackey? or ship him to the Twins for Liriano?

yeah, i have tix to the pirates series as well – hopefully we’ll be in first by at least 4 games by then.

yo don, did you catch ross goad last night? they had the royals game on for a little during that cubs rain delay – i saw him ground out a couple times. solid. he was playing left field by the way.

its strictly jimmy rollins trade rumors. todays is coming soon, i didnt forget.

Does he wear #5 yet? If not.. he better get ready… cause its looking like he should wear 55 when we obtain him this year, and then when Burrell leaves, he can go down to the single-digit..

I’m getting excited for his arrival:

Goads LOADS.. and we’ll get SMASHED out in left field

just looked him up… ross gLoad #7

GLOADs LOADS… does it get any better than that?!!

todays team will be the tampa bay rays, ill just go from division to division. yes, and even with teams that have elite shortstops like the yankees, i WILL find a way to get jimmy rollins over to them. tomorrow team is the yankees.

jimmy rollins to the rays for andy sonnanstine, reid brignac, JP howell, and rocco baldelli (who theyve been trying to get rid of) or mlb-reayd outfield prospect.

why would the rays make this trade? i dont know. they could use a better shortstop and we could use those players in return for next season.

No comment from me on your trade-rumors. . . I’ll others tell you how pointless they are

im working on it for tomorrow. im trying to figure out if the yankees would tell derek jeter that he needs to learn how to play second base for the betterment of the team. even though a-rod is a better shortstop than jimmy rollns ever dreams to be in his life, niether rollins nor jeter can play third.

    the verdict:

maybe we could kind of swing something like rollins for robinson cano, gardener, and ian kennedy, and a terrible relief pitcher, i mean really really bad. total slop for us to heckle and yell at when we go to the games.

Geoff, the Rays aren’t going to trade away one of the best short stop prospects for Jimmy Rollins who is almost 30 and not getting any younger.

Who would play SS if we got Cano? Cano and Utley aren’t good enough to play short.

or maybe we could trade him to the blue jays for matt stairs, lyle overbay, brad wilkerson, and shannon stewart? hahaha

or to the indians for paul byrd, straight up…oh no wait, id rather have jhonny peralta too if i were the indians.

what about the royals? ross gload, mark grudzelanek, and miguel olivo?

allright, ill stop trying to figure out how to get rid of him for now. i wont give him or abreak or let him off the hook though, but ill try not to talk about trading him. im of course just carelessly tossing names out there recognizing that most trade are prospect rooted and may only have one big league name in the deal.

rollins had better get his act together though. look at his numbers and hes having a horribel season.

he ranks 19th in the NL in batting average among shortstops with .263, he ranks 7th in rbis with 40, he ranks 7th in HR but he only has 8. but whats disgusting for a leadoff hitter, he ranks 15th in the NL among shortstops with a .333 OBP. thats DISGRACEFUL!!!

that tells me that he is not a leadoff hitter. he has more power than many leadoff hitters, but he cant get on base. so he should be hitting 6th.

Should I mention that Jimmy Rollins is a better defensive shortstop than A-rod… since A-rod no longer has the range to play the position? or no?

Whoever asked about Bastardo, Phuturephillies.com is reporting it is a Labrum issue.

Also does anyone remember Bases Loaded II that game was awesome
