Checking In On The Minor Arms

Here’s a nice refresher on goings on with the multiple pitchers in the minors.
- Adam Eaton wasn’t too good for Reading last night against the Bowie Baysox. He surrendered six runs on seven hits and two walks. Three of the hits were home runs.
- After a few really nice starts in Lehigh Valley, Carlos Carrasco crashed down to Earth a bit in his last outing. He allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings against the Buffalo Bison Tuesday night. He did strike out seven, keeping his K/BB splits pretty strong.
- JA Happ didn’t fare too well in his last start for the IronPigs, either. He gave up four runs on five hits and two free passes in five innings. Previously, he had been pretty unhittable for Lehigh Valley.
- Kris Benson did pitch well against Buffalo in his last start. He went seven innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while K’ing four. Not amazing or anything, but he’s had five consecutive six-inning starts. Pretty good and pretty Kendrickian.
- And just in case you really want to know, JD Durbin has not pitched well. He was demoted back to Reading after Mike Cervenak came back to Lehigh Valley. For the IronPigs, Durbin threw 36 innings and gave up 39 eraned runs. Yup. That’s an ERA over 9.00 (9.75). Good. Riddance. Real. Deal.

I dont think Eaton will come around, I’m really convinced that he’s done here. Happ’s start wasn’t surprising to see, everyone has off days and Carassco needs to get his hits down! Nine in five innings? Thats Livan Hernandez stuff right there.

It will be really interesting to see what they do with Eaton next year. Do they try and buy him out, or just let him be a backup plan (like Benson was this year) and let him toil in the minors.
If I’m the Phillies, I either let him toil in the minors for his $6M paycheck, or let him retire. No way he’s getting something from nothing.

Reading is actually AA, which makes Eaton’s performance that much worse.

Why the animosity towards Eaton? Do you really think he doesn’t want to be successful? As far as his salary, who was the stupid one – the guy who was offered 8 mil a year and accepted or the guy who made the offer?

Eaton’s first minor league game was at A-ball…he got rocked there too..
The problem with Eaton is that he got a bunch of quality starts with no run support in the beginning of the year, but he couldn’t hold it together. He’s a former 1st round pick that NEVER lived up to his potential.. bad signing there, but that happens ALL THE TIME in baseball, especially with pitchers..
Zito, Hampton, etc.. sometimes they just can’t pitch anymore

The difference between a successful pitcher and one that is not successful is sometimes a fine line. Obviously Eaton has lost that edge. I’m sure he would rather be helping the big club contend then stuck down in A and AA ball. To suggest he is just going through the motions to collect his large salary is probably unfair.

Is Eaton still alive? He is done. Unlike Ankiel, who started around 25, Eaton is probably too old to even think about making it as a position player at this point in his career. He’s a good hitting pitcher, but he would be looking at 1-2 years minimum in the cage developing as a hitter leaving him in his mid 30s. At his peak he could probably make it back to Triple A with a lot of other former pros who can’t play anymore.

I think my issue with Eaton is he has a crappy attitude and never owns up to his mistakes. Even when he got lit up a few starts ago at Reading he said something to the effect of “Well, I think I did a good job locating my fastball”. Really Adam? Are you that delusional.
Last year when Charlie didn’t put him on the playoff roster, he threw a little fit. When Myers sucked, at least he was a man about it and said “You know what, I’m pitching terrible right now”. You never hear that out of Eaton. He’s a piece of garbage.

Ankiel also had a nice dosage of HGH, every baseball writer seems to forget that just like Gagne

I hate Rick Ankiel. hes a mitchell report guy and baseball writers act like it never happened. the adam eaton saga is proof of gillicks ineptitude. what logic is behind that? he wasnt good leading up to the signing so why would he be better after you guarantee 24mm to him.
i dont want to hear anything else about how great greg dobbs is. greg dobbs sucks, ok?

Dobbs is a backup player, and always will be. The only positions he would have a potential to start in MLB is 1B and maybe LF, but not for this team. Dobbs is a good pinch hitter, but that is about it.
Rollins needs to sit down for a game or 2, and it has nothing to do with his big mouth. He is not helping the team right now, and as sad as it is to say this, we might get more production out of bruntlett for a game or two – You don’t lose much defensively, and bruntlett is more willing to do the little things like advance a runner, which sacrifices his numbers.
Utley needs to get a day off every once in a while. He is clearly hurt, and not very effective right now. I want him fresh, just incase we can overtake the mets.
From the beginning of the year Howard should have been getting a day off every week to protect him from his own strikeout record. As gaudy as his numbers are, he is not productive. He is a rally-killer and he doesn’t have efficient outs(advancing runners, allowing runners to tag-up, etc.). Look at howard’s numbers . . . now imagine what they would look like with 10% less strikeouts.

Geoff.. if Dobbs and Madson both suck in your opinion… who should we get for our bench and bullpen.
I thought that the guy leading the league as a pinch-hitter.. and the pitcher with a 3.05 ERA last year and 3.38 this year were pretty good… but thats just me.

I don’t trust Madson in the 8th inning role, but I don’t mind having him pitch in the 6th. I would pitch Madson in the 6th, 7th and durbin in the 7th, 8th.
Dobbs would get one start every 10 days or so at 3B, and I would even start him at 1B about the same amount.
