Headline: Prize fight in the NL East
The Major Players: Jamie Moyer, Pedro Martinez, Jimmy Rollins, Jose Reyes
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
The Number: 0.5 games back (Mets)
First place in the National League East is up for grabs tonight as the Phils and Mets meet in the first of a short two-game swing. The Phillies are coming off a sweep of the Dodgers; the Mets took care of business against Houston.
Vote For Pedro: Since returning to the Phillies from the DL, Pedro Feliz is hitting .357.
Vote For Pedro, Part II: Pedro Martinez gave up two runs off five hits in 5.1 innings against the Phils back in July. If you remember, the Mets broke out off Adam Eaton, but the Phils somehow clawed back before coming up short. Martinez had two strong outings against Pittsburgh, but gave up four Thursday against Atlanta.
Vote For Pedro, Part III: Left-handed reliever Pedro Feliciano has given up eight hits in 4.1 innings against the Phils this year, for an ERA of 6.23. As always, the Mets bullpen will be highly dissected in this series.
Phillies: Jamie Moyer (11-7) 3.54 ERA
Mets: Pedro Martinez (4-3) 4.97 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 79, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Burrell/Howard/Victorino/Werth/Feliz/Coste/Moyer

Your gamenight beer: Heavy one tonight. Go with Ipswich Oatmeal Stout. A delicious treat that goes well with any late-night fat-adder. Chocolate? Sure. Even a heavier meat goes good with this. Enjoy your stout slow.
Go Phillies!

No beer for me tonight as I am working.I am in NYC and looking forward to this 2 game set.I will be listening to “Wheels” and Larry tonight courtesy of XM because I want to hear what those guys have to say about the next week and a half as its VERY critical for both teams and will say a lot about October.Good luck and may the best team win.We all should try and keep it civil in here tonight both Phils and Amazins fans and enjoy the next 2 nights and the rest of the season.

The only “amazin” thing about these muts is how they had to cough up an extra 60 million in payroll just to stay even with the phillies.

I don’t know, that collapse last year was pretty “amazin”

I was looking for a little class that guy….is that the BEST you can do? Plus the “Muts” moniker (However it is spelled) is old and cliche. You don’t see Amazins fans using Phlounders,Phonies or Sillies to describe your team.Phillies deserve all the respect because they are a solid team like the Mets. Mets bullpen is a big issue as the Phils starters are quesionable.Line ups are just about even and both teams will fight for the NL East til the bitter end (and believe me,2007 was a bitter end)

as a Phils fan in NY, I desperately need a win tonight and therefore a split in the series. I can’t take 5 straight series losses to these boners and their fans.

Is that really the lineup. Its a shame we don’t have any lefty bats in the bottom half of the lineup. I guess we will need Feliz’ glove in the lineup though.

nah, muts should win this one easily. Moyer is toast tonight and it’s the 5th time he’s faced them this season, sooner or later they were going to pound him.

Griffin,
How is Church an Anti-Semite? Is that an embarrassing insult against the semantics of his last name? Please elaborate.

Pedro is probably going to get lit up anyway. I’ve NEVER trusted Pedro post 2004.

I could be mean and say “i have a lot of good things to say about your mom” but that would be a little too nasty.
Bad day at work I guess, oh and the beer contributes a bit… plus, I know the Phils are going to lose and that puts me in a salty mood

no, Ryan Church said “all Jews are going to hell” when he was with the Nats. The team made him apologize. I’m not making it up, you can google it. Oh, and I’m not even Jewish, it’s just funny how a guy can do that and get away with it. The Mets dont’ care as long as they appease their Hispanic fanbase.

then again, everyone deserves a second chance, but if Mets fans call Brett Myers a “wifebeater” (and I have no problem with that) then we can call Church an anti-semite, no?

“…as long as they appease their Hispanic fanbase.” – Griffin
Isn’t that a bit presumptuous of you to say? I won’t question your knowledge of what Church said in D.C., but I will definitely question your aforementioned statement. You’re assuming that the Mets organization only care about the financial status of the club, as pleasing the fan base entails more money for the Mets. Although I disagree with your statement as you couldn’t back it up anyway, aren’t all organizations the same way? Look at your organization. You won’t cough up a dime unless you’re basically shoved up against a wall. Mind you, your payroll is nowhere near the payroll that the Marlins and Rays have. It’s ultimately all about money in any institution.
Like I said, Pedro fucking sucks. I’ve never liked him.

David, they made a conscious decision to sign high-profile Hispanic players (Pedro, Beltran) to target their Hispanic fanbase. The Spanish lessons in between innings at Shea Stadium and the establishment of losMets.com are other indications of that. They can go about their business however they please but I can also criticize it however I please.

oh, and I didn’t mean to say they don’t care about winning. They opened up their pocketbooks to try and win, I respect that.
