Headline: Expect anything, everything
The Major Players: Kyle Kendrick, Johan Santana, Pat Burrell, Pedro Feliz
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
The Number: 0.5 games ahead
Yesterday the Phillies and Mets played — hyperbole necessary — the best game of the 2008 baseball season, and then some. The Phils won 8-7 in 13 innings, 13 gutwrenching innings of great baseball. Chris Coste delievered the winning RBI, a fly ball single into deep center field that scored Shane Victorino and sent Philadelphia into a frenzy not heard since Sept. 30, 2007.
Carpenter’s School: Because the bullpen was so taxed yesterday, the Phillies brought up Andrew Carpenter from A+ Clearwater. He could pitch an inning or two, or three. It’s best that Kyle Kendrick goes deep into this one.
Pick Up Bat, Pat: Pat Burrell is a key player tonight because as the Phils main right-handed hitting threat, he has to come through against New York ace Johan Santana. Burrell, of course, went 0-for-7 last night, maybe the worst performance of his career.
Jars Of Clay: As if there wasn’t more to write about last night, Clay Condrey had his first hit since 2003 with a double in the fourth inning. It was the first extra-base hit of his career and the second run scored of his career. His OPS is at a very nice 1.000.
Don’t Mess With The Johan: In three starts against the Phillies this season, Johan Santana is is 1-0 with a 2.74 ERA and 20 K. With at least a five-inning performance tonight, Santana would’ve pitched against the Phils twice as much as any other team he’s faced this season.
Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (11-7) 4.87 ERA
Mets: Johan Santana (12-7) 2.64 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 79, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Burrell/Howard/Victorino/Werth/Feliz/Coste/Kendrick

Your gamenight beer: Hopefully you enjoyed last night’s beer slow, because I’m not pitcking up your hospital bill. Tonight we stay slow with Cadillac Mountain Stout from Bar Harbor in Maine. Eat beef brisket with this and sit back, watch the fun unfold.
Go Phillies!

If the Mets hold on to win this, this has been the biggest waste of a series ever.

Guys:
You realize that after tonight’s L (Mets’ W), the Mets are guaranteed to win the World Series. I read it on MetsBlog.
It’s going to be a fun remainder of the season, assuming the Fightins don’t crap the bed in Chicago.

PHUCK PHILLY: If you care so much maybe you need to go get a life. I’m a HUGE Mets fan but you know what the Mets fuckin stunk at the end of the year and the Phillies put them out of their misery.

I’ll have to give it to the Muts Trolls. After a taxing 24 hours of posting on here and searching ebay for “Taz” decals and floormats for their Camaro, you’d think they would be spent. But alas, they are a resilient group, powered by Doc Gooden’s leftover crack and Keith Hernandez’ leftover Amoxicillin from his latest Syphilis infection

We’re an open forum, so we don’t ban, but we take care of people when they get out of hand. If this guy wants to press the issue, we’ll do what we have to. Makes no sense to do it, if I’m him, of course.
Switching gears, I loathe listening to these Mets announcers. Especially that high-pitched “outta here” call.

RivLez – There isnt much influence a 2 game series can have unless someone sweeps but the Mets took a toll on our bullpen with a big series coming up.

PHUCK PHILLY:
Did you see any of the crowd shots during this game–i.e., lone Mets fans standing in an all Phillies row, etc., being assholes?
Phillies fans are not shit talkers. Phillies AND Mets fans are shit talkers.
But, both also whine when the other does it. It’s annoying.

Tim: I actually think the Mets announcers are the best in baseball IMO. Not just because I am a Mets fan. If you think they are bad, listen to YES. I would rather kill myself than listen to that crappy boring broadcast.

To answer the question PP: Relievers aren’t necessarily unavailable after one 20+ pitch outing. However, managers have to make pitchers unavailable for at least a game after a certain amount of outings or pitches thrown consecutively.

So if they don’t pull this through, Lidge will be charged his first loss of the season then.

TIM, the mets anouncers are one of the best in baseball. compare them to YES, ESPN, FOX and any clip you hear on baseball tonight.. Darling won an emmy as a matter of fact.

You get some nice nuggets of analysis from the SNY crew, but just watching this season, there is a lack of research from Hernandez and Darling, and just from a personal standpoint, there seems to be a bit too much hyperbole in calls.
I’d compare them evenly with the Phillies crew, which can be a little too stodgy and happy-go-lucky.

I haven’t ever heard the Phillies guys. It would be interesting. But seriously YES has got to be the worst. If I was a Yankee fan, I would have to stop being one because I can not listen to that terrible crap they call commentating.

When it comes to announcers, I can’t stand Gary Matthews, who does color commentary like Captain Obvious. “The way you win games is you score more runs then the other team!”
Kalas is more or less a staple. Wheeler and Mccarthy are good, but they are so smart that sometimes their constant tidbits of information can be a little much.

Who are you guys kidding? Ron Darling has the worst voice in broadcast, and Keith is a misogynist. I would hardly call them the best in baseball – 2 ballplayers cannot complete broadcast booth.

nobody is better than harry kalas. ever. end of story. hate to bring up harsh memories but one of harry’s greatest calls ever was two years ago in the astros series when harry said “they’re all unearned but who cares”. even in the downest of moments that line made me laugh out loud. i dread the day harry kalas is no longer broadcasting phillies games. it will never be the same without him.

I’m not sure how it’s presented, but it may be via the lineup card. Managers will have to indicate to umpires which players are ineligible.
I don’t know if ineligibility is enforced by MLB (I looked but no dice), but it’s there to protect pitchers (mainly) from overuse.

It’s not a league rule, but managers will get together with their pitching coaches and determine who they have available to pitch every night. So, for example, if this were the last game of the season it would be plausible that even starters might be put out in the pen.
Charlie is usually open about telling press who is and is not available before the games. That happened tonight – he listed Condrey, Madson, and Romero.

Ryan, Harry has been at it my whole life (and most of ours), so yeah, it will be weird not hearing his “Outta here” call. When he was out for that week and a half with the eye surgery, the broadcasts did feel a little incomplete.

how is ron the worst voice? keith is NOT a misogynist, he stated a rule he “thought” the padres were breaking. and there is a third voice, gary cohen. he’s been around since 1989.

Brian I definitely don’t think so. I really enjoy listening to Gary, Ron and Keith. I think they make up a good combo.

Ineligibility isn’t enforced by MLB, nor is it official (in the lineup card or otherwise).
Technically Charlie is allowed to put anyone on the 25 man anywhere on the field, and if he wanted to pitch Romero today technically no one could stop him.
However; informally, that isn’t how it works.

I only hear the SNY crew when I’m up at my girlfriend’s in North Jersey, and the only time I watch up there is when the Phils are playing. I haven’t heard them enough to really comment on them.

The availability thing is more of a manager’s preference.
Average inning for Carpenter. Hope he can build off it.

Well, each is entitled to his own preference for broadcasting. The only way to tell if an announcer has transcended his team is to check the Hall of Fame for Frick Award winners.

Since the Mets have off tomorrow night, the Phils have the chance then to just even it up all together. Which would then make this whole division race even juicier.

Phillies win = Mets win
