Gamenight: Phillies (60-50) At Cardinals (62-51)

Brett Myers gets his real test of his second time around in the rotation as he faces the Cardinals tonight on the worldwide stage (be prepared to see that overused Albert Pujols-stretching-from-wide-angle-lens shot a couple times tonight).
Being Brett: Against the Mets Myers went five innings and gave up three runs while walking five. Against the Nationals he went seven innings and gave up no (earned) runs while walking one. The Cardinals are a pretty good offense, right with the Mets. Myers needs to pitch better than that Met start to show he belongs in the rotation.
Speaking Of Offenses: The Phillies have scored 551 runs, good for second in the National League. They’re slugging .444, best in the league. They’ve hit 155 home runs, best in baseball. But they’re hitting a mere .257, eighth-best in the NL. Talk about homer-happy.
100 Club: With four more RBI, Ryan Howard will earn his third-straight 100-RBI season. He’s projected to have 141.
MVP: Chad “Dim the Lights” Durbin has had an ERA over 2.00 for just 11 days this season. His ERA has never climbed above 2.70.
Here’s The Pitch: The Phillies’ pitching staff saw its ERA dip to 3.99 after Saturday night’s one-run performance.
The Todd: Last time the Phils faced Todd Wellemeyer they blitzed him for eight runs in under four innings — the infamous 20-run massacre at Busch.
Phillies: Brett Myers (4-9) 5.46 ERA
Cardinals: Todd Wellemeyer (8-4) 4.13 ERA
Gametime: 8:05 p.m. EST

Your gamenight beer: Is there any better American brewery, pound for pound, than the Sierra Nevada company? I can be partial to Sam Adams (being a Boston collegiate), but Sierra Nevada is never wrong. From the India Pale to the Stout to the Celebration Ale (I need to have this) to their Harvest ales, they’re champions of the craft. Here is the Brown Ale, another victory from the California company. Tonight is the perfect night for a Sunday night barbecue. Stoke the coals, turn on that radio (sadly, no Harry) and break open some Brown Ales with those glazed ribs, those burgers.
Go Phillies!

Believe it or not, I don’t much care for Sierra Nevada…

Some fun facts about run differential:
While the Phillies(+76) have the second best in the national league to the Cubs (+134). I thought it was interesting to see the Marlins are (-23)!
And, There are only 4 teams in the American League w/ negative run differentials.

It’s a shame we waste alot of runs on blowouts, such as the afformentioned 20 run massacre. Would be nice to save some up for the big games when we need them. Let’s go Brett, keep turning it around

Where are Rivlez, Joshua and all those other polesmokers? Now that the Mets have started to soil their bed linens again, these cockroaches have started hiding under the floorboards and swimming in the trash juice.

i don’t put too much stock in run differential. did you feel more comfortable in one of those blowouts or last night’s 2-1 game.
It is pretty telling in one run games however. It’s not surprising that the angels lead the majors in saves considering how low their run differential is when compared to other teams such as the cubs or red sox.

@That Guy: The Mets fans are in retreat. Keep an eye peeled for the Marlins fan, who may leave his blog to join us for some company. He dislikes eating alone.

Mets fan are likely icing their groins after getting kicked in the balls all weekend by the powerhouse Astros. Things to look forward to if you’re a Mets fan: Maine’s shoulder is fine and he wont’ miss any starts (oops…maybe he will :)), Pedro is back and in his old Pedro form (oops, maybe he’s not either), the bullpen will get better (can they really get worse?), and Wagner “should be fine.”
On another note, someone should take a sniper shot at this fucking Ludwick prick. He’s beginning to ire me.

well if you take Ryan Ludwick out of the game, I’d say Myers is pitching extremely well. Even with Ludwick he’s got his command tonight, I think at one point throwing 22 strikes vs 8 balls. (not sure what the ratio is at this point). Now if our offense could just hit. I’m telling you why can’t we hit when our pitchers throw well? It’s like they can only hit when the pitchers give up 8 runs..so frustrating..

I suppose I’m not the only one who is disgusted with only winning 1/3 against the best teams, first place or not. I’d rather stumble against turd-like Houston than lay down and score 5 runs in 23 innings against a contender.

The hitting stinks tonight. This is why we needed Manny or Holliday, or even Bay; good proffesional hitters who don’t just beat up on weaklings.

Can we chalk up Ludwick to the list of Phillies killers? I think the offense forgot their bats again this series. And that is why I wish Howard could play defense.
