Gamenight: Phillies (64-55) At Dodgers (60-59)

That wasn’t fun. The Phillies had a lead last night going into the eighth inning, but they lost. Cole Hamels was again denied double figure wins. Moreover, the Phils couldn’t stay the course; the Mets and Marlins are nipping on their heels, as they’ve been doing for months now.

Go Joe, Go: Joe Blanton pitched seven sparkling innings against the Pirates Friday night. But the Phillies offense decided to take one of their (seemingly) 40 vacation days.

Penny For Your Thoughts: Brad Penny, the former All-Star Game starter, has a career 3.33 ERA against the Phillies. He also dated Alyssa Milano.

Shane On You: Shane Victorino, who left the game early last night, is listed as day-to-day with back pain. Vic isn’t starting tonight.

Phillies: Joe Blanton (6-12) 4.71 ERA
Dodgers: Brad Penny (6-9) 5.66 ERA

Gametime: 10:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 80, fair
Lineup: Rollins/Werth/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Dobbs/Jenkins/Ruiz/Blanton

Your gamenight beer: Tonight we have Lagunitas’ Cappuccino Stout. Yeah, who doesn’t love a nice cappuccino at the end of a long day? Last year I was sitting in an Italian villa, sipping on cappuccino as the sun set and the stars began to burn in the expansive European sky. So get as close as you can to that with this wonderful drink. It’s a late one — eat a cannoli with this.

Go Phillies!

I think the Mets have a chance in the playoffs… Dude, they have Santana!

Mets play the Nationals the same amount of times the Phillies do.

The Mets own us… every decent team owns us. The Mets are at least competitive with good teams, right Tyler?

This does not appear to be a playoff caliber team. We have watched the entire team slowly decline into a .500 team. Kind of like the Mets last year, except minus the self-assuredness. It makes me sick to liken this team to that one but they similarities are mind-boggling. The NL East as a whole is sub-par. These past few weeks have really strained my patience with this team. It was evident this team was collapsing when nothing happened the trade deadline. The Phillies, especially Jimmy Rollins, have become content with being mediocre. That is not okay. I actually feel the Mets and Phillies should put Johan and Cole on waivers and trade them to the Brewers or Cubs just so a team might be able to put up a fight against the Angels in the World Series.

Mets have no chance, even with Santana. Mets will always be 2nd place in their own city. Even in losing, Yankees have more class and are more interesting to watch.

Cole will pitch for the Brewers and lose a game 3-2. It’s Cole’s MO.

Mets fans are like friggin termites. Somebody call an exterminator.

This isn’t the ’07 team, that’s for sure. The Dodgers clearly made some intelligent moves (Blake and Manny). Too bad the Phils couldn’t have done the same. Blanton is living up to his ERA.

That’s sad but true danny. Maybe they should just trade him to the Angels then so they will be the Dream Team of baseball. I wouldn’t mind a rotation of Santana, Santana, Hamels, Lackey, Saunders.

When you’re done spraying here, hit the dugout with some Glade cuz this team friggin STINKS!

Boy, it’s up to Brett Myers to salvage something tomorrow. If he can pull it off, it would be a huge confidence boost at least for him.

I just cannot believe this offense went 1 for 21 (???) since the 3rd inning. Is this the most disappointing loss of the year? Or was it yesterday? I can’t even keep track anymore.

Isn;t Guerrero a free agent to be?

I can believe the offense was that pathetic… they’ve been that pathetic for a while now!

Am I sick to hope that the Phils lose 10 in a row? So that Charlie gets fired, Rollins traded, and Marson brought up? Is that sick?

I think so danny, but what is the likelihood we take a splash on Vlad? Our ownership would never upgrade like that, we’ll pull from that “B List” and march into 09 with an outfield comprised of 3 Geoff Jenkins.

This is the most disappointing, because it’s the “two” of the one-two that started yesterday.

Yes, that’s sick. Hold that thought until next week until we’re in 3rd place.

danny:Yea Vladdy is a free agent, but this cheap organization never signs big free agents, thats why we’ll continue to be the team we are.

This team is not going to make the playoffs. Does Charlie get fired?

I’m not that down on Blanton, the strike zone was not good tonight. Blanton threw a lot of low strikes that were not called. He just wasn’t getting them.

How lucky did we get to make the playoffs last year? Unbelievably. Then we miss the playoffs this year… Isn’t that when you find a new manager?

Yeah, this crew is a little suspect. Did I hear Scully correctly when he said one of the (with the walrus stash) was just brought up from the minors?

No Danny, I have a life unlike half of you on this website.

Say hello to the first place Mets…

We had a better attitude last year. That team hustled. Rollins is the new Rolen, which I never saw coming.

Maybe it’s time for all new coaching changes after this season and they need to hire a GM outside the organization…I can’t believe were gonna be stuck with Ruben Amaro Jr. as our GM.

Yes, you would be better with ronald mcdonald as your gm!!!

Why does everyone hate on Amaro?

There were many pre-season baseball magazines that predicted that the Phillies would finish third in the Eastern Division this year and their play the last couple of months against the Mets, Marlins and now the Dodgers looks like those predictions are going to ring true. The organization’s reluctance and failure to sign Lohse, Taguchi and especially Aaron Rowand during the off-season and then failing to add any offensive support to the batting order before the recent trading deadline has alot to do with the current demise of this team. We were led to believe that Geoff Jenkins and Pedro Feliz were going to replace the offensive production of Aaron Rowand but I had my doubts, where Jenkins was concerned in particular, and now we have seen how much the offense has been helped by Jenkins and Felix so far.

    3 things:

    1. “Geoff” must be the stupidest blogger ever to exist. “every New York fan owns gear for the mets and yankees AND red sox”. That’s so stupid it hurts.
    2. Having to stay up until after 1 AM just to watch your team lose 3 consecutive heartbreakers on the west coast couldn’t have happened to a more deserving group of fans. I hope you all know that all over the country, Phillie fans are viewed as the most pompous and mean-spirited. Even ahead of the Yankees. So eat shit.
    3. Is it any wonder the bullpen is beginning to blow games? Durbin and Romero have been called upon to pitch in every game this season. Not to mention they’ve been pitching WAY over their heads.

The point is New Yorkers are phony people, and they certaintly are. I was there not too long ago. Total cesspool of trash and filfth. Police assaulting innocent people and tasing them for no reason. Trash and piss everywhere. Disgusting. Bad roads that looked like they were bombed in WW2.

WTF guys. As a Mets fan, you guys are acting so stupid. This is only mid August and you guys are getting ready to give up. You wonder why Rollins is getting annoyed. 2 weeks ago when you guys were 3 games up and playing great all I heard was great things on here and now you are in a tie for first and the season is over. You guys need to calm down a bit. One series in August does not make the entire season. Seriously you guys sound like a bunch of Yankee fans.

Geoff I’ve been in Philly working many times. Phillies “hoods” are worse IMO than in anywhere in NYC. Do you feel better about yourself now?

New York is more dispursed trash everywhere. In philly, its isolated in a few bad, really bad neighborhoods. But Philly is misrepresented in terms of that. Most of the city really isnt that bad. All of the violence, minus your typical random acts of violence, is confined to a few areas.

also. i cant believe they blew that game. why is clay condrey pitching when its meaningful? disgraceful team. They dont deserve to make the playoffs, theyve blown two leads alreayd this year. I dont know if they can hold on. Im now becoming concerned with clearing out the trash from this team and getting a good group together for next year.

If theyre not going to patch the outfield hole and add to the bullpen then oh well.

Why do that right now? Just keep playing and possibly win the division and lets see what happens in the playoffs. If the possible post season is terrible than I believe they need to start making drastic changes. The Mets themselves are going to need some drastic changes, they will need a 1B, LF and a possible steady second baseman. I think they are nuts for not getting an outfielder and praying that Tatis continues his production. It’s going to be some changes for both teams I think regardless of this years results.

Can we please not have a long debate about which one of our dirty cities is more dirty?? The entire east-coast of the United States has ridiculous amounts of crime and drugs and everything in the major cities.. no need to get into debates like that on the baseball blogs

All cities have crime in ALL parts.. the Northeast Philadelphia is probably considered the nicest general neighborhood within the city limits…and its no picnic up here anymore either.. My sister just moved to Brooklyn for work.. some blocks are beautiful, some are complete trash.. just like every city

Geoff, seriously, just shut your trap already. You spew nothing but generic, unbridled hatred toward everyone who is different than you. And most of it has nothing to do with baseball. If you have a problem with the players on the Mets that’s fine, but when you start talking about how dirty the streets are and how bad crime rates are, then it’s time to move the conversation to a political blog. No one here wants to hear your ridiculous views on society. Talk baseball or go away.

Repeating phrases that were rapped by SHAQ to “battle” against Kobe Bryant is pretty cool… you probably have one of those hats with the fake-manny-dreadlocks already because you are so cool.
