Reading back over NJ’s comments, I believe that he has nailed the problem. They draft and sign the same kind of player. The long ball looks great on highlight films and Baseball tonight, but if you watch a team for an entire season you can see the missed opportunites to win games is not the inablility to hit homers but the number of times the Phils fail to put the ball in play. In addition to the strikeouts, their lack of bat control to advance runners or to score men from third with less than two outs.
We are witnessing the consequences of a personel policy that tried to match the player to the ball park. (Notice that the Phillies offensive numbers are better away from Citizens. Could it be that everyone is trying to hit it out?) As a result, we have clones of the same type of player. Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Werth, Ruiz? and Rollins when he is bad (and he is really bad this year). Look at the Angels for a model of how a team with a mixed offense and good pitching can thrive. We have the good pitching but unfortunately our mix is very, very bad.

hope that helps. they need this day off tomorrow. theyd better come tuesday focused and ready to go on a rampage for the rest of the season. there really isnt anymore room for error. a few more blown games and it coul cost them the season if the mets continue winning and dont collapse.

Just like the first game of the series, its a win (and we’ll take it) but all the same problems are still there. If we’re not playing the Pads tonight, we lose this game no doubt.

Well the whole country got to see how lousy our offense has become but thankfully our pitching was solid! I was rather intrigued by Hamels throwing more contact pitches tonight! Interesting performance from the man tonight.

That was a really good confidence builder for both Hamels and Lidge. Utleys defense really won that game and Jimmy made a couple of really good throws to keep the base runners off and keep things simple for Cole.

you let him him finish it if he has a shut out. if he is at 98 pitches with 1 run then there kind of isnt really a reason to make him throw any more.

Take your point Gavin but the way things have gone for Cole Charlie has to manage his confidence. Lidge closing it out here to give Cole the win might just be a turning point.

You have the bottom of the lineup up. If you dont need your closer then you dont use your closer. In this case you dont need him. Cole was shut down tonight. I’m just saying…..I dont want to criticize after the fact.

dude, let your closer finish it. hamels has been abused more than any other starter this year. theres no reason at all to let him go another inning. if lidge cant do it then its lidges problem.

I’ve counted 4 hard hit balls tonight of of that rag arm ass starter. Either they need new players or new cocahces becuase this group has no clue. Howard swings at a ball over his head after Utley walks on 4 pitches, then he takes two FB down the middle. I mean Steve Jeltz and crew were better offensivily than this bunch. They suck.

yeah gillick is way outdated. my thinking with the scoutking and internal development angle is that, even if amaro is the worst GM ever, hell probably be better than gillick at drafting players because hes newer. i still dont think he should be our gm.

Just remember Luis Aguayo was can’t miss too. That’s why we gave the Cubs Ryan Sandberg instead. They really wanted Aguayo but he was “untouchable” because he was a can’t miss talent. What did he hit, .220?
