Is Freddy Garcia A Fit For Phils?

It was reported yesterday, and it’s been debated already, but I feel it’s best to create a new thread for it: The Phillies have scouted Freddy Garcia.
Garcia, as you’ll remember, went 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA for the Phils last season. He then underwent shoulder and labrum surgery, and now he’s healthy. Other teams have scouted him, as well.
Forget the crap he gave us last season - is Garcia right for this team? I don’t know. He has a great past, but has declined in the past few years. He wouldn’t be much more than a contingency plan, a la Kris Benson. And with six starters already on the big league club, there’s really no reason to stack more starter contingency plans.
Instead, the Phils need to find a reliever. Seeing last night and what they got from a back end that now includes Clay Condrey, Les Walrond and misappropriated JA Happ, the Phils badly need some insurance there.

I think all the points that need to be made in this discussion are all listed above. What would he bring to the table that is not already there? Unless he is throwing absolutly nasty stuff, focus on bullpen help.

Im ok with bringing him in, even to have him around in the mix to battle for a spot next year. its worth a shot at least. see what he wants, what his demands are and take a flier on it. its a safer bet than kris benson. kris benson will never be in our starting rotation, ever. garcia would actually have a chance if he returns to form.

they have a loogy, they need a setup man. there are none out there, brett myers is your setupman. there are at least a FEW starters lingeroing out there or in your own system to replace myers. that should be the thought process here, because do you really feel safe signing scott eyre? come on now. 7.11 era in 11 appearances

I would have to agree here ONLY if he is not getting a bunch of money. IF they can sign hbim cheap then bring him in. It could only help to add someone with Major League experience.

i’d take a risk on him. low risk/high reward. we all know pat gillick likes those type of moves. Jayson Werth is example 1A of that.
Freddy should practically pitch for free for this team because of last year’s debacle.

Let me ask you guys a question, who’s fault is it that we traded a few prospects and paid 10 million dollars for damaged goods. Not Freddy Garcia. It is the managment’s fault. We like to always take it out on Freddy, the guy was clearly hurt. He has done nothing but win games and have quality starts in his career, and has a very good postseason track record. Give him a chance, can you really tell me that you don’t bite your fingernails down and are on the edge of your seat every time Moyer and Kendrick take the mound, albet without either one of them we don”t make the playoffs last year nor are we in first place this year, but they get me nervous every time out. A healthy Freddy Garcia is a hard throwing righty with nasty stuff. Always was. I would give him a chance.
STOP BLAMING FREDDY, Gillick traded for damaged goods, all he did was try to pitch through a serious injury to help us!!

Ease up Richie…its more fun to vent on Freddie.. But if we had a healthy Freddie Garcia, the horse that the sox had,the ace we thought we had…..I would gladly shut up..

for whatever reason, teams in major league baseball do not give their own physical evaluations to opposing players before making trades… they go with the other team doctor’s medical reports.. its a joke, I know.. but that is how its done in baseball..
AND… althogh he’s been shuffled elsewhere since… Gio Gonzalez makes his MLB debut today for the Oakland A’s.. that would really suck balls if both Gio and Gavin Floyd turn out to be studs

beanes weakness is the lineup. noone is better than him and his people when it comes to judging young pitching, except maybe the marlins. beane can just plug in any young pitching prospect and they do fine, its nuts.
the harden – haren – blanton punch from years past that got them to the ALCS in 2006 has been sold off for the next generation of that duscherer (whos 30 and will be out of there in december in some trade), eveland, greg smith. just keep on plugging guys in there.
the previous generation? barry zito – tim hudson….

Gavin Floyd needed a change of scenery. not in a million years would he have ever been good in a phillies uniform. he woulda been worse than Adam Eaton at his worst. he was complete garbage and needed to go elsewhere. i woulda traded him for a bag of balls at the time he was dealt. so i can’t blame gillick. it is quite shocking how well he’s doing in Chicago.

right but pretty soon its going to be: brett myers needed a change of scenery, ja happ needed a change of scenery.
myers goes to some al team and closes for them and saves like 45 games for them
happ goes to some nl team (ill bet, but i hope we keep him) in some sort of amaro ill advised trade and wins 18 games for like the dodgers or someone like that.
thats the type of stuff that happens because the phillies screw up young pitching too often. that needs to not happen, ever.

i don’t by the “floyd couldn’t be good here” shit either. that’s all crap. change of scenery is for high school players. ADAPT, you’re getting paid millions.

Also what exactly are the Phils doing to these guys to “make them suck”…what is it,? why cant we change it?…..look this excuse doesnt wash in the baseball world of today..you find out what others are doing and copy them if need be…

There is something to be said coaching philosphies and all that stuff… any pitcher that goes to St. Louis (or really wherever Dave Duncan is)… has a career year.
I dont know why, but Gavin Floyd was never going to cut it here in Philadelphia..but he’s doing a great job in Chicago

i agree. when you see that, “needs change of scenery” that means the mismanagement has been so bad that the player is irreperably scarred with tis organization. it means he hates the manager and the development people and probably hates the front office and wants out.

We dont need him here at all. We have a spot starter in Happ and Garcia will cost too much for his production that wont differ much from what we have.

i dislike our pitching coach. he was good with beckett and burnett in florida be he has not been so hot here.
starters come here, velocity goes down, and the pitcher ends up struggling to become what they should be or used to be.
lohse was OK here, he goes to st louis and becomes an ace, what gives?

Well sorry for venting but you both are entirely right and it pisses me off more than anything else about the Phils………When was the last time we took a management scarred player from somewhere else and turned him into a 20 game winner here?

Unless people were blown away by Garcia ….who, when healthy, was awesome! there would be no need to bring him in.. They would have to genuinely consider him a #1 or #2 to make it worthwhile, since this rotation has a #1, and then everyone else is a #3-#5 (my god I wish we could figure out Brett Myers!!)
Do different pitching coaches really not use Long-Toss… that was always the best way to stretch out your arm, which is supposed to increase velocity.. but remember when Dubee said he suggested that to Myers, but Myers doesn’t like to play Long-Toss. what gives??

Geoff actually makes a good point about the A’s organization and their seeming ability to plug in any pitcher and have him become a dominant ace in green and yellow. Then, when they are traded, with a few exceptions, their performance drops off.
Does this strike anyone as what I’ll call “Denver Broncos’ RB Syndrome”?

I watched freddy garcia hit a ground ball, pivot, and directly walk into the phillies dugout without even motioning towards first base. He is on record as saying he hated philadelphia and its fans. This was best evidenced by his refusal to even sit on the bench for 1 game after he was injured. Its gillicks fault that we acquired an injured guy but its freddy garcia’s fault that he sucks at life. I would rather bring back Ben Rivera than sign this ungrateful jerk.

Shame on you
Fool me twice
Shame on me.”
–Chinese Proverb.
Are the Phillies seriously taking an interest in Freddie Garcia? Even after Garcia kept quiet on his injury problem before and after joining the Phillies last season? Will the Phillies repeat the inexcusable omisson of a physical exam should they decide to sign him…again? Please say it ain’t so Amaro!
