Lidge Feeling Shoulder Soreness

A lot to talk about today — Myers, Gordon, post-Pirates, pre-West Coast — but the big story was buried a little in the gameday discussions. Brad Lidge’s shoulder is a little tender. This could be huge.

It was revealed Lidge has stiffness, soreness and inflammation in his right shoulder. According to the team, it’s nothing to get worked up about and if anything, sitting him Saturday and Sunday was a precautionary thing. Lidge said he was feeling better Sunday, too.

But we all know the Phillies and their medical history. We all know that usually when soreness or inflammation is introduced, it leads pretty quickly to a 15-day DL stint. And the Phils cannot lose Lidge for 15 days, let alone three.

Charlie Manuel rested some blame on Clint Hurdle’s overworking of Lidge’s arm during the marathon All-Star Game:

“He wasn’t geared to throw that many damn pitches.”

I agree that Lidge should never have been throwing that much; Lidge is used to throwing, at max, 30 pitches, not more than 60, or 80, or 100.

There is no indication that Lidge has been overworked this season (his 51 games and 49.1 innings are closely in line with his career average of 67 games and 71 innings per season), and he has no recent shoulder history, so we shouldn’t be too concerned.

But be watchful. The last thing this team needs is a Lidge DL stint.

I’m not saying we can afford to lose Lidge, but I don’t think it will be the end of the world. Durbin/Romero can close out the game(depending on whether there is a righty or lefty up to bat in the 9th.)

Phil, I love your positive twist … but we absolutely cannot afford to loose Lidge for any amount of time. That would weaken an already thin pen. Durbin/Romero are great for the 8th inning. Pushing them back, while I agree they could do the job for a short period of time, would lead to the question of how do they get to the 9th? Who bridges that all-important gap in the 7th and 8th. Let’s all hope “Light’s Out” is indeed OK and he will be throwing flames this week on the West Coast. If he goes to the DL, the division lead goes with him!

Guess what? if hes hurt, he HAS to go on the 15-day DL because the way they manage injured players is terrible and they could hurt him worse and lose him for a lot longer than two weeks.

My philosophy is: take care of the problem now, DL or not.

Again, mismanagement of pitchers and injured players. Rich Dubee, again, screwing people up, gettin gpeople hurt by interfering with their mechanics. He has to go immediately and i dont trust him with any of their staff. If they had dave duncan as the coach, kyle kendrick would be throwing 91-95 mph fastballs and spotting them on the corners like lohse has been doing. he wont do the long toss, he wont build arm strength, he changes their motion too much. hes just a BAD PITCHING COACH.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed. They said yesterday their goal was to have him available tonight, so if we don’t see him in the next day or two I’ll really start to worry. Hopefully we’ll have a stinker tonight where we won’t have to use him – I”m sure he could use the extra day off, and so could Durbin.

Thats why their trainers are bad, and their pithcing coach is bad, and the groundskeepers, and the hitting coach, and the aramark vendors, and the stadium architects, etc….

The Phillies Weather-Producers are bad too… RAIN DELAY ?!!

But I don’t understand how anyone could disagree with Geoff here.. obviously the Phillies trainers are terrible.. I mean they’ve only been one of the healthiest teams in baseball because of .. maybe Luck..

But theyre not. Theyve got people out there that are injured and playing like ass, chase utley, jimmy rollins. they ended tom gordons carreer with assistenace from rich dubee. dubee screwed with lidges delivery and now hes hurt and his velocity is down. everyones velocity is less than what it should be. gavin floyd, lohse, their velocity all went up after leaving. myers velocity and mechanics were fixed by AAA coaches! not by rich dubee.

rollins has been great over the past few days but you can tell hes still injured you can tell chase utley is injured and the trainers have him popping so many painkillers that he cant see the ball. luckily, he connected with one yesterday.

the weather people for the phillies ARE bad. cant they perform a pagan ritual of some sort that will fend off rain until were ahead late in the game and then recall it? dont they have good shamans down there anymore? whats baseball coming to when you cant bring in a shaman to perform a ritual offering to appease the new age rain spirits that govern the weather for baseball games, and baseball games only.

This team lies and lies and lies about injuries so I don’t know what to make of this.

besides, everyone should know what the HAARP project is. the phillies owners need to buy a HAARP machine to break out thunderstorms when theyre leading by 1 in the 8th inning.

Geoff, holding onto the lead isn’t the problem – it’s getting the lead. Maybe we should break out the HAARP in about the 4th if we’re not ahead. That may work.

thats a good idea. its also a good idea to try and acquire jake peavy at the winter meetings. i read the padres are trying to shed payroll and rebuild…and hes one of their highest paid guys.

From overworking Lidge to the rain delay/tarp debacle, the Colorado Crotchies and Clit Hurdle have proven to be classless. I hate that team and I think its hilarious how wretched they are this year.

well that would be just too bad if they had to let him go. he’d look good in red pinstripes.

The phillies medical staff is atrocious. They shouldn’t even be practicing in the deepest depths of Appalachia. They are only schooled in limb sawing and leeching out blood disorders. I’m surprised they don’t use whiskey as an anesthetic

I agree with Jeff. The Phillies always lie or underestimate and we lose the guy for the month. I fully expect Lidge to be gone until Sept. 1 and if he returned before then, great.

Yeah I concur. they always lie or screw up or something. It shows you the owners are clueless about baseball and dont care to know anything because otherwise theyd get in there and clean that up. bring in new trainers, make gillick fire the pitching and htiting coaches. they need to pony it up for the best sports physicians.

Let’s hope for a few straight Phils blowout wins. That would be a nice way for Lidge to get a few days rest.

I guess Myers could always close again and Happ could take his spot in a worse case scenario.

Should I leave him in my fantasy line-up this week is the important question? And this the first I have heard Utley is hurt except for the typical dog day bumps & bruises everyone has.

Ahh-h yes,.. the predictable whining that seems to begin with geoff’s rants on “their trainers are bad, and their pitching coach is bad, and the groundskeepers, and the hitting coach, and the aramark vendors, and the stadium architects, etc…”. (chuckle)
. So Geoff, you can see from your armchair in your apartment that Rollins and Utley are playing injured? Really!? Take time to read this team report where Lidge credited Dubee for spotting a “mechanical glitch” in his delivery:

“Lidge, who didn’t pitch in a save situation Saturday night, said his right shoulder has felt “sluggish” for several weeks. Neither Lidge nor manager Charlie Manuel are overly concerned that the discomfort will linger, and Lidge said he’s hoping to be ready to pitch Monday night in Los Angeles.

Lidge, who played catch Sunday morning with pitching coach Rich Dubee, has been taking anti-inflammatory medication. He has seen team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti, but he hasn’t undergone an MRI exam.

Manuel said Lidge is “just now getting his strength back” after warming up six times before pitching in the All-Star Game on July 15 at Yankee Stadium. But Lidge believes his shoulder troubles have stemmed from a mechanical glitch that was discovered last week by Dubee.”

Hopefully, with rest and a mechanically corrected delivery, Lidge will be ready this week.

They should trade Jimmy Rollins and Rich Dubee for a Pitching-Coach-Prospect

and brad lidge will have to go on the DL because rich dubee tinkered with his delivery. rich dubee hasnt done anything really impressive at all. im pretty sure this pitching staff’s improvement can be traced to them NOT listening to rich dubee. brett myers was fixed by the Iron Pigs’ staff. Kyle Kendrick is an “It” guy who works more closely with Jamie Moyer than he does rich dubee. jamie moyer doesnt need to be coached by anyone at all, because he is basically a player/coach already. if cole hamels left he would gain 3-4 mph velocity on hsi fastball and other coaches would be able to spot the flaw in his delivery that is the reason he keeps getting injured every year.

go back and look at his delivery and see if you can spot hamels’ flaws.

brad lidge has a classic ocmpact delivery, theres nothing wrogn with it. ever since they admitted that dubee changed it hes gotten less velocity on his fastballs and hes gotten hurt now. dubee changed tom gordons delivery and it led to a potentially career ending injury.

then when dubee gets them injured the training staff cant recognize the injury fast enough or the manager isnt told the whole story and they keep sending them out there desptie injury.

theyve gotta can dubee right now before he gets more people injured. the htiting coach has to go to beacuse the players are injuring their lower backs from WHIFFING so hard when they swing at junk in the dirt.

they win a series against a bad team and everyone acts like all is forgiven again. they swept the nationals, theyre bad, then they lose one to the marlins who have above average pitching. any decent pitching shuts them down completely.

now, with like two exceptions, the dodgers staff is mostly garabge, so they should be able to plow through that nicely.

jimmy rollins’ value has skyrocketed in the past week from one bag of baseballs to two bags of baseballs.

    Geoff… you’re an idiot.

Where do you buy tickets to watch the practices.. I’d love to see Kyle Kendrick working more with Moyer than he does with Dubee.. and watch Moyer coach himself and not listen to his pitching coach.

Lidge was terrible and completely ineffective before he came here..

Gordon has missed entire seasons in his career before due to injury..

How is Rich Dubee to blame?? WHy the hell do you feel it neccesary to go after EVERY level of coaching and ownership with this organization? Give it a rest already.

if you think those things are true then i dont need to say anything else about that. you cant tell that? all of that stuff is really obvious and anybody that knows anything about baseball will be able to see that.

why give it a rest? the notion that the organization is flawed from top to bottom, grossly so, is something that we need to keep pounding.

Don is right, I haven’t seen any footage of Moyer coaching Kendrick. And i totally agree with trading Rollins so that Bruntlett can start everyday even when Feliz is back ! Our lineup would be murderers row with Bruntlett, Ruiz, Jenkins and Feliz in the lineup everyday…

I think the Dodgers have the lowest ERA in the NL (garbage)

ANd if our pitchers are all performing better than expected, How the F are we still blaming the pitching coach?

oh sorry.. the Dodgers have the lowest ERA in baseball at 3.65.. Phillies are 8th in baseball (3rd in the NL)

I would like to know what has changed since the days of pitchers throwing 200-300 innings a year. Once today’s pitchers hit 100 pitches in a game – that’s their night.

Something seems fundamentally wrong when a pitcher throws only 49 innings there is talk of overwork. Granted there’s a lot more cash involved these days and clubs are trying to protect their investments but what has changed over the years?

the pitching coach gets peopl einjured and their velocity goes down. i dont know what happened to him, he used to be good when he was with the marlins, but the marlins are a positive winning environment. the phillies, under this ownership regime, have failed repeatedly and are marked with the stigma of a bad group of people to do business with.

by now its really obvious that they are intentionally doing enough to make money off of us and beyond that, they are intentionally failing and doing everyting they can to fail. a la the owners of liverpool.

at liverpool, howwver, they have a legendary manager/coach who is so good and reputed that he FIGHTS the front office and can get away with it. too bad we dont have anyone like that…..like if we hired tommy lasorda and brian cashman…

kuroda is overrated. kershaw is awesome. penny is too much like myers for my liking, and derek lowe is solid and holds it down. billingsley is ok.

the dodgers bullpen has broxton, saito (isnt he injured?), kuo is ok, and a BUNCH of trash.

if the phillies cant mash them then the phillies are again not good enough.

M O R O N… you don’t listen to yourself ever… you’re now saying things like the Phillies pitchers get injured and lose velocity because Philadelphia, under this ownership is not a winning environment, like Florida..

    and then..

If the Phillies can’t MASH the team with the best ERA in baseball, they aren’t good enough..

they throw harder now and i think there a lot of pitchers with odd deliveries and bad mechanics. also, THE 6 MAN ROTATION IS GONE!!! pitching more frequently puts more strain and abuse on the body. hence the pitcher abuse system was developed to track it. but i think they REALLLY need to get abck to the 6-man rotation and make it manditory throughout baseball.

too many people are getting injured and losing their careers.

obviously they are doing a pretty damn good job if the pitching staff is the 8th best in baseball and the 3rd best in the NL.. but Ruiz sucks balls at catching.. and Dubee can’t coach.. Jimmy Rollins’ obvious need to be traded is probably the reason the Phillies pitchers are doing well this season

rollins needs to be traded to the cardinals for dave duncan, one of those ice tubs, and a new ptiching machine.

carlos ruiz doesnt even belong in major league baseball, hes a black hole. every major league catcher should be able to minimally do what he does and more. minimally.

If you pay attention to what’s going on at liverpool the manager isn’t winning a fight with the owners, in fact the owners just failed to stump up enough cash to sign a player the manager wanted (Gareth Barry). Liverpools manager isn’t even legendery, he’s been in charge for 4 years and hasn’t won a league trophy or even finished close to doing so.

why does rollins need to be traded ? Duncan did a great job with Mark Mulder didn’t he

that right. to be great you have to hit good pitching, EVEN though that good pitching may be slightly overrated (its not garbage, i exaggerated, but i think their bullpen kind of is), you still have to mash them and get to them if you want to be considered NOT a fraud. they havent shown the ability to get to good pitching, or even average pitching, all year.

mark mulder was already broken when he got there. another billy beane con job

he had a great record at valencia and won the champions league, got back to the final despite all the stuff going on there…

the manager is allowed to get the one elite player he wants each year when the ownership is stealing money from the club and refinancing their loan package every day. the stadium at stanley park isnt being built yet because (like the casino-bid winner in pittsburgh) they NEVER HAD the money. it was all a fraud to begin with.

they also own the texas rangers, by the way.

benitez was allowed to get fernando torres and robbie keane, and torres is one of the top 3 players in the world hands down. he won some fights, thuogh he has lost a few as well. he also won the fight to buy out mascheranos contract and re-sign him to a long-term contract.

now, theyre telling him: you have to sell alonso if you want barry and hes not going for it…

was rich dubee allowed to look at freddy garcia, were the trainers? no. not taht id trust them too, but they didnt even get a CHANCE to check him out in person.

so the Phillies are either considered “great” or “fraud” by you, depending on how well they the Dodgers pitching this series.. there is no middle ground.. and their current record does not matter at all.

Even if they sweep this series.. they will still have to go perform some magic act in each of their next 10 series in order for them to be considered “NOT a fraud” by you… can’t you just acknoweldge and accept that they are a decent team with flaws? The almighty RedSox leads us by a whopping 2.5 games! right now… I don’t think we’re winning the World Series this year, but I don’t think they need to prove to you that they “aren’t frauds” on a daily basis.

He is in no way shape or form a legend of a manager, a legend is Alex Ferguson who’s won the champions league 2 times, the F.A cup 4 times and the premier league more times than I can remember. And he spends less money every season than Benitez. Your pont about Mascherano is ironic, because he is a shocking waste of money for Liverpool. They already have Gerrard and Alonso in CM and he goes and spends 20 mil on another when up front you’ve got Voronin or Kuyt starting every week ? Liverpool will never win the league with Benitez as manager, and signings like Mascherano is exactly why. And why sign Barry when you’ve just forked out big time cash to sign Mascherano ? The point is, he dosn’t just get what he wants, he get’s a set budget every year like every manager in soccer and every GM in baseball

they are a decent team with flaws, that is correct. MANY flaws.

they are OVERHYPED by much of the baseball media, even the guys that hate us. and, before you ask, i will NOT be providing an example of that, just to tick you off.

now. if they fail to make the playoffs theyre a “fraud” and a “disgrace.” If they make the playoffs and lose in the first round, they are a “fraud”, if they lose in the NLCS thats “decent improvement.” if they lose in the WS thats “a good run but they had too much to overcome.” if they win the WS thats a “good job, they really proved all the doubters wrong, including me, and i will admit that they did a nice job and were a good team this year but they still need to keep burrell and sign a top line starter to defend their crown.”

you fail to mention he won the spanish league twice, including one year when they won the double when he was at valencia.

by the way, i agree about barry, they dont need him. mascherano is one of the top holding midfielders in the world. hes not an offensive guy really. they need a winger and they havent been able to get one for years. ive heard rumblings of david silva and mancini but it hasnt happened over the years. i also think the goaltending could be better, though hes a decent keeper.

They do need to re sign Pat and go after Sheets or CC, that is true.

glad that you have it all figured out.. and you know exactly how you will respond to however they finish the season!! Hopefully everyone reads that today and you won’t have to remind us every 4 hours how you feel about them being “overhyped” and being “frauds”
