Lidge Feeling Shoulder Soreness

A lot to talk about today — Myers, Gordon, post-Pirates, pre-West Coast — but the big story was buried a little in the gameday discussions. Brad Lidge’s shoulder is a little tender. This could be huge.

It was revealed Lidge has stiffness, soreness and inflammation in his right shoulder. According to the team, it’s nothing to get worked up about and if anything, sitting him Saturday and Sunday was a precautionary thing. Lidge said he was feeling better Sunday, too.

But we all know the Phillies and their medical history. We all know that usually when soreness or inflammation is introduced, it leads pretty quickly to a 15-day DL stint. And the Phils cannot lose Lidge for 15 days, let alone three.

Charlie Manuel rested some blame on Clint Hurdle’s overworking of Lidge’s arm during the marathon All-Star Game:

“He wasn’t geared to throw that many damn pitches.”

I agree that Lidge should never have been throwing that much; Lidge is used to throwing, at max, 30 pitches, not more than 60, or 80, or 100.

There is no indication that Lidge has been overworked this season (his 51 games and 49.1 innings are closely in line with his career average of 67 games and 71 innings per season), and he has no recent shoulder history, so we shouldn’t be too concerned.

But be watchful. The last thing this team needs is a Lidge DL stint.

i guess i should say “very good manager” if you want to be hard on him you could say that in england hes not a legend because he does need to get over the hump and win the premier league

They wanted Villa but he wants to stay in Spain allegedly. David Bentley would’ve been a shrewd signing.

I remember that final very well because i’m a west ham fan lol. Gerrard broke my heart

bentley is a nice player. the soccer coach at my friends work (high schooll teacher) is one of the few americans certified to coach those players in europe. benitez brings him in to run the summer traning sessions. he usually has good inside dirt. he said theyre going to be much better this year than they were last year.

but since the school hasnt started yet he hasnt gotten any new inside dirt. hes probably over there right now still.

Yeah signing Keane should make them better instantly. If him and Torres stay healthy I think they can challenge for the title.

definitely. the defense has some uncertainties there. with new signings coming in but itll be good enough i think. the midfield is strong up the middle but needs more attacking speed on the flanks. ryan babel is still young.

ive been in favor of someone like bentley or bringing in someone like joaquin or vicente if valencia elects to keep david silva instead.

You mean ‘over-the-hill’ Roy Keane? His best days are well behind him.

I’m not sold on Babel, he’s shown flashes of being a good player but it’s clear he still has some time to go before he reaches his potential. How often do you get to see Liverpool games over in the US ?

i havent tracked who west ham has brought in closely enough. the forwards look solid, with dean ashton there looking to break out even more this season. maybe another decent guy might help for depth there. the midfield looks ok, but i think they could use some more depth there perhaps as well. maybe a bit more speed?

the defense looks solid there. the new GK will be good. are they pursing anyone right now? do they have any money? it seems like they had some money to get tevez and mascherano but had to sell them off. i havent studied west ham closely enough. theyre usually hovering in the 6-10 range in the standings right? challenging for a UEFA cup spot usually with tottenham hotspur.

i get to see them on espn champions league coverage. also, i used to have fox soccer channel but i dont anymore. ill get it back when i move. they show tons of premier league action on FSC>

even though philly has an mls team coming soon, i cant watch the MLS. its garbage.

Yeah they’re pretty comparable with spurs (tottenham), although they’ve spent alot more money than we have recently. Our manager, alan curbishley, has made some questionable big money buys over the last couple of years and that’s sort of dug a financial hole. Ashton is definatley the big player for us, he should become an england regular if he progresses. A uefa cup spot would be a real achievment this season.

yeah, there are a few old guys stuck in taht lineup who are well-respected but could use some help. the other forwards are ok but not great. they could use another hitman up front to setup ashton. they could also use a fast winger or fullback.

soccer is all about ball control and speed now. those european teams fly up and down the field. in the mls they knock it around and lolligag around out there. its like watching high school soccer.

It does sound like its getting better though, thierry henry said he wants to play in the mls in a couple of years time. Beckham has really increased it’s profile in europe.

yeah itll be watchable in like 3-4 years i think.

i REALLY hate their transfer system. its like one year deals baseiocally. if someone blows enough money you can lose a guy after one year. its become almost a joke. they NEED to fix that. its gotten outrageous.

i just read reports that arizona got adam dunn…strikeout machine….

also that moyer thinks he can pitch until hes 50..

Isn’t there a salary cap in MLS except for one player on each team ? They could really use a salary cap in the premier league to help even things out between the clubs, it’s become far too elitist. The top 4 is the same every year and any other team has 0% chance of winning the league now, which is a shame for historic clubs such as west ham, everton, aston villa and tottenham who just can’t compete financially with the big 4. And there’s no draft system to make things slightly more fair.

Moyer could win 300 games if he pitches till he’s 50. And that’s a good move for Arizona, obviously depending on what they gave up. They needed a power bat and he’s the best available.

I agree. There needs to be a draft and a salary cap in european soccer. its ABSURD! the top 4 NEVER changes. chelsea goes out and spends like 200mm E in one offseason a few years back! theyll go and spend outrageous amounts on overrated players. the glue on manchester united are the same guys thatve been there forever.

if moyer can be a consistent 5th starter for a few years id actually take that despite the problems ive always had with him

theres one exception in mlb, but you can trade the exception slot as well. so LA has two slots.

thats gotta go. you need a traditional salary cap but its gotta be alot higher to allow some star power to come into the league at a consistent level across all teams.

is moyer HOF caliber IF he wins 300 games? if he pitche duntil 50 and did it consistently hed have a good shot at 300.

i have issues with him. but if you pitch taht long and win 300 games thats pretty significant.

I hate chelsea with a passion, and the amount of money they spend makes it worse. I can’t wait till abramovich sells up and they’re left with no source of income and a fairly small fanbase. Both totenham and west ham have more london based fans than chelsea, as well as arsenal obviously.

It’s funny… often when I read the comments on this blog, I think that some Phillies fans would still find a reason to bitch and moan even if the team won the World Series.

I HATE chelsea more than any other team in the world, with Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Barcelona coming closely behind. RM and Barcelona are absurd clubs too when it comes to spending.

in spain i really like Villareal so Im ok with them winning in spain if they ever do. i dont mind the spurs either actually, their ownership is a tad shady though.

They would complain the number of games it took them to win it.. or whoever had the lowest batting average in the series should get traded..

HAHA. id be pissed if they didnt go and spend a a lot more money internally and externally because theyd have more revenue to deal with…you gotta re-up your championship squad to repeat.

id even consider calling them a fraud if they didnt repeat the title once..

I think Heilman is one of the leading contenders for the Phils’ MVP award this year. Yes, that’s right, the Phils. He’s single-handedly beat his own team more than we have!

yeah, Heilman is terrible. Unfortunately, Jerry Manuel said “he’s going to look elsewhere” when the next save opportunity arises.

Some of the great quotes from today’s blog at Metsblog.com:

“………..and it begins.” (referring to the bullpen entering the game)

“here we go guys. get the pepto-bismol out”

    “here comes the meltdown……..”

“In the most pathetic bullpen I’ve ever seen, Joe Smith is especially pathetic. Why must we be tortured by this clown day after day. Throw a dart into the stands and you’ll find a more effective pitcher.”

“They are going to blow this game”

    “Okay…time to score 7 insurance runs….we’ll need all 7.”

“Comon guys….Philly and FLA sees this and you know they’re probably laughing more than they’re scared of the Mets”

“And how sad is it – as David W. has been quoted as saying – that ‘we have to get more runs so as not to put our BP in this position night after night’. Uh, isn’t that what a BP is for? To hold the lead even if it’s just one run?”

“Get your vomit bags ready! Y’all ready for the Aaron Heilman Show????”

“SEASON OVER!!!! SCRWW THIS TEAM!!! LOSERS!!! HEILMAN GO AWAY YOU FOOL”

    “AMAZING. F**king pwned by a celleart-dweller. AGAIN.”

“Yay!, once again the Mets grab defeat from the jaws of victory!
    F-you mets”
