Odds And Ends: Happ, Gordon

A quick odds-and-ends post on this Saturday.

  • Tom Gordon is facing a second opinion on his elbow, and very well might need Tommy John surgery. That would obviously end his season, and possibly, his career.
  • JA Happ was sent down following the Scott Eyre trade and roster addition.

I’ll have much more about Gordon later, but as for Happ, I say “thank God.” Happ needs to throw every couple days as a starter. Get him ready for Opening Day 2009 or the first sign of starter injury.

Everyone go on and discuss until the gamenight post.

Sorry for the lax day. I’m getting ready for a family wedding in the Jers tonight. Enjoy the game, and drink some for me! (Though I will NOT need it.)

This would be Gordon’s second round of Tommy John surgery. Not good.

Obviously Eaton’s done and it would take a lights out spring for him to make the rotation, but where does Happ figure? We don’t know yet what the situation will be with Myers but how do we add a front-line starter (the constant source of conversation on here) have a spot for CC to take a shot at the rotation and have a space for Happ?

(the answer can’t be not re-signing Moyer who everything suggests will be here next year)

Ill bet they trade happ in the offseason for some outfielder or something. he is good enough to be in their rotation but the phillies already screwed him up enough. let him get a shot with another team. he deserves to be in someones rotation.

I don’t think we know enough about Happ yet. Sure he had a couple of nice outings this year but he also had a stinker last year and he wasn’t too successful out of the pen (granted he sat for two weeks before pitching).

What is truly puzzling is why did the Phils even bring him back up only to sit him on his duff for two weeks. It appears that the Phils are flying by the seat of their pants without a true plan for this team. No wonder this team looks lost. The tone is set from the top and right now the top looks lost also.

i wonder if they move myer sin the offseason? he makes too much money to be a reliever, do you think thyell force him to start or move him for some value? i cant figure out where theyre heading with that

Geoff you’re not the only one who doesn’t know where they’re heading. Neither does management.

Personally, I think was brought up with the intention of a trade being made. Possibly including Happ or maybe Myers. The trade fell through and Happ was left in no-mans land.

the more i think about it. moyers spot will be taken by carrasco because i think moyer will try to play beyond this year but it wont work out well and hell retire mid-year or early in the season and carrasco will be the only one left to fill his spot. happ will be traded and so will myers. the phillies ALWAYS piss away a pitching surplus…just watch. they will go out and sign a frontline starter.

    so youll see

    frontline starter
    hamels
    blanton
    kendrick
    moyer/carrasco

happ and myers will be out of here. happ will be traded for a right fielder becayse they will eat jenkins contract just to get rid of him to open up the spot. there are no outfiedlers in free agency this year either that are reaky worth blowing mad money on. burrell has to stay otherwise theyll sign adam dunn and waste MAD money on him for someone not as good. or worse…

Geoff, your dreams of the phillies signing a frontline starter has absolutely no chance of becoming a reality.. No frontline starter would want to play in this tiny ballpark. That only means that the Phillies would have to overpay a starter just to get him to consider coming here, and we all know the phillies always bow out when the price is high.

The Phillies best bet is to trade for a pitcher in the offseason, and the only player on the roster that would get the phillies a top of the rotation pitcher would be howard. You wouldn’t trade utley, he is just too good, and rollins could possibly get you a number 2 starter, but he provides too much defense, and shortstops are hard to come by if you have nothing brewing in the minors.

I would like to take a run at a guy like Teixeira in the offseason (fat chance with this organization), because I think he could put up numbers close to what howard has done offensively. He will cost an arm and a leg, but so will Howard if he keeps getting higher arbitration numbers every year. Teixeira would be a tremendous defensive upgrade, he’s younger than Howard, he’s a switch hitter, and he could probably hit .300avg/35hr/120rbi. Then you trade Howard for pitching help, and next year we become odds on favorite to make the world series, if not win.

Tex would be a very nice addition but would the Phils outbid the Yanks, BoSox, Mets and Angels of this world. Doubtful.

You would have to trade Howard prior to acquiring Tex or Howard’s value would be greatly diminished. Once you trade Howard then you must get Tex and that would mean opening the coffers which the Phils appear unwilling to do.

What about a Howard for Halladay deal? (How many times would Howard strikeout against AL pitching?)

Geoff, Moyer is a free agent at the end of the year. the Phils can’t move him anywhere.

  • surplus inventory…
