Philles Need Bench Parts

Seems like every news outlet in the Philly media today is blasting trumpets about the great stuff going on with the Phillies. Well, I’m going the other way.
The Phils are starting to feel the effects of the injury bug, unlike the happy-injury-free piece Jim Salisbury wrote today. Yes, the Phils have had less DL stints than other teams, but you could argue the Phils’ DL stints take a larger toll, as the depth behind the Phils’ top players is ridiculously thin.
An injury to Pedro Feliz has brought Mike Cervenak into the fray. Cervenak has just one official plate appearance in his Major League career. If that makes him the 25th man, consider So Taguchi and his .227 average the 24th man. Eric Bruntlett, hitting .226, is the 23rd man. That leaves a backup catcher (either the average Chris Coste [104 OPS+] or well-below-average Carlos Ruiz [53 OPS+] and one of the platooning outfielders (either Jayson Werth [113 OPS+] or the one-swing Geoff Jenkins [80 OPS+]).
When Feliz returns, Greg Dobbs will take his rightful place as the first man off the bench. His 127 OPS+ as a bench player is fantastic. But after him in the current rotation, what is there? What if Werth is starting?
The Phillies need experience and talent off the bench. Preferably a right-handed hitter, but a righty and a lefty wouldn’t hurt.
Who’s out there?
Michael Cuddyer (OF, 1B): Once a 100-RBI man, he’s only hitting .252 this season, but that would make him a pretty good option, as opposed to Taguchi. He has some pop, as well.
Frank Catalanotto (1B, OF): While a lefty, he does have good numbers (.288, .358, .410). He cannot, however, hit lefties, so I wouldn’t go at him.
Marlon Byrd (OF): Ahh, the former Phillie. He’s hitting .254 with seven homers in a platoon job for Texas. Would be an upgrade, but not much, over Taguchi.Randy Winn (OF): Someone that’s been discussed, Winn is hitting .284 for the Giants. While he’s an upgrade over Taguchi, I don’t know if he’d get the playing time he needs in the outfield.
Rich Aurilia (IF): Having a pretty average year, Aurilia would be a nice contingency plan and the type of veteran singles/doubles hitter this team needs.
Jason Michaels (OF): Love those former Phils. Hitting .262 for Pittsburgh, he has some pop (7 HR, 32 RBI in NL) and is slugging .469. He’s also best friends with Pat Burrell. Would be a fine veteran leader addition.
Of those presented, I’d love Aurilia. The Mets are rumored to be looking hard at him. I’d go strong after him too, then maybe turn to Michaels.

Thats a pretty shoddy list of players. I guess ill take randy winn, jason michaels, michael cuddyer in that order.

I’d love to have Winn to platoon with Werth rather than Jenkins. Here’s a name you left off your list Felipe Lopez who was cut by the Nats. (especially if Feliz still isn’t quite ready after his DL stint) He can play every infield postion and I believe he’s even seen some time in the OF. He’s numbers as a right handed hitter this year arn’t terrible .261/.326/.654 and he even as some speed he stole 20 bags last year.
I know his overall numbers don’t look so hot be for the 24th or 25th man on your roster I think he’d be more than fine.

How about Golson? Michael Bourne, was a great bench guy for us last year. I know you more looking for a bat of the bench, but great glove and speed for late innings just as Bourne did for us last year. He would be better then Taguchi.

A couple of those young AA-guys might get called-up in September when they can expand the roster.. I’d imagine that Golson and Marson would be among them… for defense/baserunning Golson is said to be major-league ready..

Maybe if you can get one of those guys on the cheap. But like Don M said, callups are less than a month away… help could arrive then.

if feliz is hurt worse than were being told, then id go and snap up felipe lopez, a cheap utility infielder to play third. better than dealing with the mariners over beltre. ill think they give carrasco/marson a few starts in september when a rotation member needs that extra day off. golson is a good guy to bring up too because he is an outstanding outfielder.

I wonder what the phillies would even try to say to justify getting ross gload? they would send amaro out there to lie about how they tried to get someone else but he didnt get waived, and then theyd charlie out to say something in redneck jargon that sounds like “well he can hit the baseball sometimes.”

Ok… so they’re a little short on talent when it comes to bench strength. However, let’s now overlook Bruntlett’s capability as shown when he filled in for Rollins (missing 20+ games due to ankle injury). Or Dobbs, league’s best pinch hitter, who can play more than one position. The platoons of Werth/Jenkins and Ruiz/Coste have not been a total disaster as some here would suggest and have served the team well more often than not. So Taguchi has had few opportunities with such limited number at bats to override his struggles. Hopefully, with 51 games remaining, he may yet show why he was a premier player off the bench last season.
Also keep in mind that there may be additional help on the way with the September callups ( the roster expands to 40).
If injuries are a concern, the Phillies are more fortunate than most clubs. They have had to use the DL 11 times. Compare that to last season In 2007 when the Phillies were hammered by injuries. Eighteen different players went on the DL a total of 21 times including Chase Utley, Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, Freddy Garcia, Gordon, Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth, Jon Lieber, Adam Eaton, Ryan Madson and Michael Bourn. This season, there are reports that indicates that fewer injuries can be contributed to better conditioning and workouts that are individualized to each player’s needs. Let’s hope that trend continues.
Don’t misunderstand me, I’m all for strengthening the team when needed…but do so prudently without the sense of desperation.

we should do so liberally with sense of sheer desperation

The underlying principle that this post seems to overlook, is that the phillies haven’t been reaching their offensive potential all season. Either that or last year was a fluke.

They’ve been reaching their potential, but they’ve been doing it with far too many home runs and not enough singles and doubles.

Anyone ever hear what the asking price for Tavares, and Ryan Freel types were? And if that type player would be brought in mostly for Defense and Base Running, do we really have that in Golson or no?
If we are looking for a pinch-hitter.. I think they need to focus on the right-side, since Dobbs and Jenkins are good from the Left.. (say what you will about Jenkins, but if he comes off the bench for you, not many teams have a more experienced Lefty with power off the bench..)
I like Cuddyer, as I think he has potential still, eventhough he’s heading for 30 years old. I don’t know what you could get him for, but he would be my guy over Marlon Byrd or Jason Michaels

Here’s a quote from that other phillies blog today
“Greg Golson, who’s one of few remaining R-Phils worth monitoring, made his first professional start in left-field last night. Reading Phillies writer Tony Zonca suggests it’s a way to prepare for a possible September call-up as Pat Burrell’s defensive replacement.”
Here’s my question shouldn’t they start him in right? I thought he was suppose to have a great arm or at least better than Werth’s or Jenkins’.
At times Charlie usually slides Werth over to left anyways when Jenkins enters the game. (Which I don’t get Jenkins should be in left and Werth should stay in right, he’s the better OF) Jenkins mainly played left last season yet I don’t recall seeing out there at all as Philly.
the Sept. OF defense should be Werth, Vic, Golson

Very nice posting. Hit the nail right on the head. I’m a big fan of Rich Aurillia, I first started watching him in ’02 when Bonds was going after the single season home-run record. He’s solid as an infielder and he’s great in clutch situations. I wish we could get Michaels and Byrd back, then we can deal Jenkins away. I think alternating Werth and Jenkins in left is an insult to Werth.

I think Golson is actually supposed to cover more ground than Victorino.. making the possible Werth, Golson, Victoino from L to R the way you might want to go… meanwhile.. Burrell is staying in games later over the past few weeks… the only way he hurts you is because he can’t get to as many balls as other guys… but the ones he gets to, he’s just as good!

jimmy rollins and shane victorino made them more than a one-dimensional team last year with their ability to get on base and get around the basepads. jimmy rollins isnt doing that this year.
shane has been doing that lately, but it hasnt been enough to make them more than a one-dimensional fastball hitting power team. in the playoffs you need to play small ball.
shane has almost single-handedly improved their ability to play small ball in the past month, but he needs help in that task.

The Taveras asking price had to be high. The Rockies arent ones to give away players.

Golson has 19 stolen bases, and he’s only been caught 4 times… maybe they figured the difference between him and Willy Tav wasn’t worth trading.. and I think Golson is maybe a better defender?
He has 6 errors in only 83 games… Tavares has 4 in 86 games.. wonder how many are throwing errors, how many are on balls that other guys might not have reached in the first place though

Why isnt Jay Payton on this list anymore? And its not that bad for a list of bench players…
Is Jay-Mike still in the habit of roughing up cops because Philliest phinest are on there toes plenty as it is…

Nah thats what im saying though Mike… im sure that the Rockies wanted some high prospects for Tavares, and I guess the Phillies thinking was that Willy Tav would be a pinch-runner, defensive replacement guy anyway…. which is what Golson’s strengths are…. if they aren’t called-up before Sept, they aren’t allowed to be on the postseason rosters though (anyone confirm that??) But they are probably thinking that they have a better team than last season, and they have some postseason experience… so they should already do better than last year…. and hopefully they dont face a RED HOT team again in the 1st round… that Rockies run was insane to last year!

I think the Muts are looking hard at Rich Aurilia, he’s from Brooklyn and Aurilia sounds semi-hispanic, so he’d work for Minaya.

Yes, there are some yokels on our bench.
I disagree with Lopez, Bruntlett plays pretty well at 3rd, spelling Dobbs for defensive purposes. I dont think theyll release Jenkins (though I wish they would–or trade him for Michaels).
Taguchi is the obvious upgrade. Golson for speed/defense (no way he’s worse than So) and a veteran infielder (Aurilia) seems like the most sensible moves here.
I’d rather my players punch cops than their wives.

Hey give Brett a break, I forget what his line was that night, but I mean someone had to take the brunt of it, she was probably just in the way. (JK!) Don’t jump down my throat!
Anyway, I wish we could an Ibanez type, let him start everyday instead of this platoon nonsense, Then we would have a righty (Werth) and lefty (Jenkins) on the bench. I mean Seattle is only 27 games out of first, literally, has anyone seen them play lately? Woof!!

If anyone in the AL wants Ibanez..they get first crack at him.. and if no AL team does, then any NL team with a worse record than the Phillies (everyone but Chicago) gets a shot at him… considering the Mets needs OF help, im sure they would land him both to help them, and to prevent the Phillies from obtaining him

i think we should trade tagoochee and gordin for holliday and halladay. so what if players have to pass thru waivers after the deadline, or if those players are on separate teams. the rockies and blue jays would be crazy to pass up the opportunity to dump payroll.
by the way, met fans are nothing but a bunch of stupid, gay, wife-beating, fat, conceited, worthless, uneducated, cowardly dicks who should be rounded up and slaughtered! can i get an amen?!

Cuddyer could but that would be a difficult trade to pull off. He’s had a tough year and is probably still not up to full strength after all that time out with the bad shoulder I think it was, nevertheless he’s a 25/100 guy and would be an intimidating spot starter and bat off the bench. Winn still has too much left on his contract to even think of claiming or making a deal for him, he’d made the Jenkins deal look a steal.

^as for our sept call-ups who’s going to be a viable option when it gets down to setting the playoff roster? Golson doesn’t have the plate discipline or the experience.

If they are looking for someone to replace Taguchi… is Golson not even ready to do that? Its not like Taguchi is going to give you a ton of offense.. but maybe they think his experience would pay off more then a strikeout from Golson..
Im not sure what the Twins will do though because they are currently in 1st place in the AL Central.. Gomez and Young haven’t yet lived up to their hype.. but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… same stance I have with our own team… so maybe they would trade Cuddyer since he isn’t a part of their current plans anyway ?
